The Vengeful Extra's Ascension-Chapter 230: Waking Up!
Time moved strangely after that meetup, passing relatively steadily and unremarkably, as if the word itself had decided that after the violence of the past couple of days, it would offer no more drama unless it was being forced.
Albedo remained in the infirmary room alongside Lilian, and at some point, he shifted from the chair to the edge of the bed, careful not to disturb Lilian, his back resting against the headboard while he kept watch.
He didn’t truly sleep, not in the way sleep usually came, but he drifted in and out of a shallow, half-conscious state where thoughts loosened their grip and memories blurred at the edges.
His Mana returned painfully slowly, coming in threads as it washed across his body, making him feel whole once again. Every time he noticed it, he resisted the instinct to pull at it and accelerate the process, wanting to refill his mana pool naturally, as this would strengthen him for the future.
Elara had been right after all, this wasn’t something that could be forced, so he just went with the flow.
During all of this, servants came and went quietly, leaving water, food, fresh linens. Raven never appeared, but Albedo could feel her presence somewhere in the estate, distant, watchful, ensuring that nothing followed the Everglade disaster back to them.
Guards rotated outside the corridor. The city beyond the window shifted through a full day, sunlight giving way to dusk and then night again.
And through it all, Lilian slept.
Not the unnatural, forced unconsciousness of the ritual lattice, but real sleep. A deep, restorative experience that healed her entire body and fixed what had been torn apart comprehensively.
Albedo watched her chest rise and fall more times than he could count.
Every now and then, her fingers twitched. Once, she frowned faintly, as if dreaming. Each time, his attention sharpened instantly, only to ease again when her breathing remained calm and steady.
By the time dawn came again, real dawn this time, pale gold spilling through the curtains—Albedo could finally feel his mana pool settle into something resembling stability. It wasn’t full. Not even close. But it was there.
Enough that the hollow ache behind his eyes faded into a manageable throb.
Enough that he could breathe without feeling like he might collapse if he stood too quickly.
Enough that he dared to hope.
It was shortly after the sun fully cleared the horizon that he felt it.
A subtle change in the room.
Lilian’s breathing shifted, not faster, but lighter. Less deep. Less distant. Her mana signature, which had been smooth and dormant, fluttered faintly, like embers stirred by a breath of air.
Albedo straightened instantly.
His exhaustion vanished under a surge of sharp, focused awareness as he leaned closer, watching her face with absolute intensity.
Her brow creased.
Then her lashes fluttered. Once, then twice, and finally, after all of that, Lilian’s eyes opened.
For a heartbeat, she didn’t move. Her crimson gaze was unfocused, drifting across the ceiling as if trying to place herself. Then awareness snapped into place all at once, her body tensing as memory rushed back.
She inhaled sharply.
"!"
"Hey," Albedo said immediately, voice calm but firm. "Easy, Calm down. You’re safe."
Lilian’s eyes snapped to him as she heard that, and for a split second, Albedo could see a raw and instinctive panic in those eyes, but thankfully, it shattered the moment the Vampire fully registered his presence properly.
Her body relaxed almost visibly, shoulders sinking back into the mattress as relief overtook fear.
"...Albedo," she breathed.
He let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. "Yeah. I’m here."
She blinked a few times, grounding herself, then slowly pushed herself upright—only to pause, surprise flickering across her face.
"...I don’t hurt," she said quietly.
Albedo smiled, the tension finally breaking in a way it hadn’t since the ritual chamber. "That’s because you’re healed."
Lilian looked down at her hands, flexing her fingers experimentally. No tremors. No instability. Her blood-mana flowed smoothly beneath her skin, powerful and whole, no fractures, no violent surges.
Her eyes widened.
"I," She swallowed. "I remember the ritual. I remember... thinking I wasn’t going to wake up."
Her gaze lifted back to him, sharp now. "You stopped it."
"We did," Albedo corrected gently. "Raven handled the monstrosity. I just broke the array."
"That’s not just," Lilian said immediately, voice firm despite the lingering softness of recovery. "I felt it. The moment the sacrifice snapped. That was you."
Before he could respond, the door opened softly.
Elara peeked in, and froze the moment she saw Lilian sitting up.
"...Oh," she said.
Then her face lit up completely.
"Oh!"
She rushed in without another word, nearly tripping over her own enthusiasm as she stopped at the bedside, hands hovering as if unsure whether to hug Lilian or examine her or do both at once.
"You’re awake," Elara said, breathless. "You’re really awake."
Lilian laughed softly, the sound still a little rough but undeniably alive. "I think so."
Elara pressed her fingers lightly to Lilian’s wrist, eyes closing as she checked her mana flow out of pure habit. Her expression shifted from relief to amazement.
"...Your circulation is perfect," Elara murmured. "No scarring. No residue. This is—this is a full recovery."
Albedo felt something loosen in his chest so suddenly it almost made him dizzy.
Lilian noticed.
She looked between them, her expression softening into something deeply sincere. "You both stayed, didn’t you?"
Elara smiled. "Of course we did."
Albedo nodded. "There was nowhere else I needed to be."
Lilian’s gaze lingered on him, something warm and grateful shining in her eyes. Slowly, deliberately, she bowed her head slightly, a gesture far more meaningful coming from someone of her status.
"...Thank you," she said. "Both of you. For taking care of me. For not giving up."
Elara waved it off immediately, though her eyes were a little too bright. "You don’t get to thank us for that."
Albedo chuckled quietly. "Yeah. That part’s non-negotiable."
Lilian smiled at that, truly smiled, the tension of the past days finally easing from her features. She leaned back against the pillows, exhaling slowly, as if only now allowing herself to fully believe she was safe.
