The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse-Chapter 624 - 617 The Meaning of Sacrifice
Chapter 624: Chapter 617 The Meaning of Sacrifice
Gao Yuan looked toward the doorway; he felt that he still needed to act as a meat shield for Ram.
But soon, Gao Yuan saw Li Jinfang leaping out from the flames with a shield, followed by Ailin, then Big Dog, and finally, Ram.
There were hardly any people left within sight on the dock; Xinghe had certainly not been idle just now, and her injuries weren’t sustained while taking a stroll.
So Gao Yuan and Xinghe emerged from the nuclear submarine, and after another round of stranglehold by the two of them, there would be no one nearby to threaten Gao Yuan for the time being.
But was the battle over?
No, the battle was far from over.
Just as Ram fought desperately to intercept the nuclear submarine, the Sanitation Worker would similarly fight with all their might to protect their Ark of the Covenant.
"Scatter, Little Fly!"
Ram let out an exhausted shout, then Fly ran past him, knelt on one knee, and immediately fired the portable anti-air missile that he had shouldered.
The missile traced an arc in the sky toward an attack helicopter, but the helicopter launched flares and made drastic evasive maneuvers. Nonetheless, after several changes in direction, the missile ultimately exploded at the rear of the armed helicopter.
The helicopter began to spin in the air, then plummeted rapidly toward the ground. However, on the ground, about a dozen tanks were speeding along the Dike Road.
Tarta roared, "Gather weapons, set up an anti-tank defense line, the Ark of the Covenant! Focus on the Ark of the Covenant, carry it and get out of here!"
Yang Yi looked at the incredibly miserable Gao Yuan and Xinghe, his expression equally shocked, but he immediately reached out to Gao Yuan, shouting, "Go! Take the Ark of the Covenant and Xinghe and leave!"
Ailin gestured with a downward motion to the helicopter in the air and then pointed at the ground.
The helicopter started to descend, dropping at a rapid rate, practically crashing to the ground, but the Black Hawk ultimately managed to land stably.
Li Jingang was the first to jump out of the helicopter, followed by Yu Shunzhou, then Ashraf, Nie Erlong...
Nie Erlong swung his Rocket Launcher around to his back; as Yu Shunzhou took it, he said to Gao Yuan, "Brother Yuan... I swear."
Murphy, waving his pistol, rushed to Xinghe, cursing furiously, "What are you doing! What the hell are you doing! Don’t do this again, where’s the Ark of the Covenant? Take it and get out of here, fast!"
Indeed, there was still a helicopter available, capable of flying away from here with the Ark of the Covenant.
Gao Yuan glanced at Xinghe and said, "Go get the Ark of the Covenant, my arm’s no good!"
Xinghe displayed her speed before everyone; starting her run, she left behind a trail of blood droplets as she raced toward the submarine.
Ashraf handed a backpack to Gao Yuan and seeing that he had no intention of taking it, simply hung the strap around Gao Yuan’s neck. Then with a nod at Gao Yuan, he turned, holding his Mosin-Nagant, and kicking a board, he ran to a low wall and crouched behind it.
These people were too professional; they didn’t need Gao Yuan to do or say anything.
The tanks rumbled closer; firing from a distance, they shot an explosive shell. Because they couldn’t directly hit the helicopter, they used an explosive shell, hoping to damage the helicopter with the shrapnel by hitting close to it.
The shell landed a bit behind and didn’t threaten the helicopter, but the shrapnel pierced Cao Zhenjiang’s neck.
Cao Zhenjiang’s machine gun fell from his hands. He clutched at his neck, then fell to his knees, powerless, and soon blood started spurting from the wound.
Cao Zhenjiang lay on the ground, one hand on his neck and the other pointing at the helicopter, trying to speak, but blood kept gushing from his wound, preventing him from uttering a word.
Just then, Xinghe charged out of the submarine, carrying the Ark of the Covenant. She ran swiftly, and when she passed by Cao Zhenjiang, she glanced at him. Then she stopped, placed the Ark on the ground, opened it, threw the still-bleeding Cao Zhenjiang inside, closed the Ark, and once again sprinted toward the helicopter.
After throwing the Ark into the helicopter, Xinghe turned silently, grabbing Gao Yuan, who at the same time, grabbed her.
Both exerting their strength, they intended to throw each other into the helicopter. But when they simultaneously pulled, they both ended up tumbling to the ground.
Gao Yuan and Xinghe looked at each other, then Gao Yuan let go of Xinghe, stood up from the ground, and after tossing the Revelation hanging from his neck into the helicopter, he whispered, "You go!"
Xinghe smiled and replied, "Only if you go."
Gao Yuan looked toward the distant tanks, Xinghe followed his gaze, and they both fell silent.
Suddenly, Ram yelled furiously, "Get the hell out of here! Wasting time now, what are you trying to do? Do you want to render my sacrifice meaningless?"
That was easy to say, but the remaining people, they really couldn’t resist the speeding tanks.
So many had died just for an opportunity to snatch the Ark of the Covenant. Now, with the opportunity seized and the Ark in hand, wouldn’t they escape?
But if they left, would they stand by and watch as Spark Squad, Satan, the Water Organization, Black Devil, and Cerberus died?
Should they prioritize the bigger picture, or... die together?
The bigger picture should come first. But still, Gao Yuan didn’t want others to die.
Because Gao Yuan thought he could resolve it—just a dozen tanks, after all; he had taken on tanks before.
The tank was taken care of, and with that, all problems were solved. Had they not dealt with the tank, these people were as good as dead.
"Let’s show them our strength," someone said.
Gao Yuan stood up and then looked at Xinghe and asked, "Together?"
"Sure, together."
Xinghe smiled happily, despite the terrifying cut on her face.
Gao Yuan took a deep breath and bent down, but just as he was about to exert force, he heard Ailin yell in despair, "Get the Ark of the Covenant down, get away from the helicopter!"
In the sky, more than a dozen armed helicopters flew low and in tight formation towards them.
There was no need to board the helicopters now. Ascending would just get them shot down. Gao Yuan and Xinghe’s recklessness had saved them—no, they had saved the Ark of the Covenant and the Revelation.
This was indeed a battle of despair.
Just then, Ram suddenly yelled, "What are you dazing for? Get into the underground shelter!"
Gao Yuan snapped back to reality, remembering there was still the option of the underground shelter.
The enemy tanks stopped firing and slowed their advance, their confident posture exuding despair and helplessness.
Murphy raised his pistol, continually firing in the direction of the tanks while yelling, "Larry! Larry! You traitor! You, who have betrayed your faith and humanity, ah..."
Gao Yuan’s intuition told him that entering the underground shelter would also be useless, but they still had to do it, they must do it—even if they ended up trapped inside, at least they would avoid the current crisis they had no way to counter.
Just then, Xinghe pulled the Ark of the Covenant back from the helicopter. She placed it in front of her, then took the Revelation and casually hung it around Gao Yuan’s neck.
At that moment, an announcement blared from a loudspeaker, resonating throughout the entire dock.
"Surrender the Ark of the Covenant and the Revelation, and you may live. I will allow you to surrender. If you refuse to hand them over, you will die, but I will still acquire the Ark of the Covenant and the Revelation. Or perhaps you wish to destroy the ark? That would extinguish the last hope of humanity. Ram, I know you’re here. Now, think about it, what choice will you make?"
Murphy trembled with fury.
What was the use of entering the underground shelter? This was the very heart of Djibouti, and they were in the Sanitation Workers’ territory; ultimately, they could not escape.
Ram took a breath, tilted his head, and said urgently, "Don’t panic. We’re not at a dead end yet. Let’s go inside first. With the Ark of the Covenant here, it’s the best cover. They won’t dare to fire. At the last minute, Xinghe can bring in the ark. Rush in, then use it to heal you and Xiao Yuan. Heh, I refuse to believe they can stop you on the surface."
It was still Ram, ever so calm. Gao Yuan felt his chaotic mind instantly settle.
Indeed, as Ram said, they weren’t in a hopeless situation yet.
Xinghe’s eyebrows twitched, her movements somewhat terrifying due to the wound on her face, but soon, she began to smile and whispered, "No, not necessary. There’s no need for all that fuss."
Murphy looked at Ram with a face of despair, shook his head, and whispered, "We don’t need to go in. Other than being a nuclear bunker, it’s also a good place to trap us. Let Xinghe and Gao Yuan take the items and go straight away, on foot. With their speed, no one can stop them. Then, find a suitable place to heal yourselves with the Ark of the Covenant..."
Xinghe smiled and said, "No, that won’t be necessary. Don’t you understand? Reinforcements have arrived."
Larry continued to shout through the loudspeaker, "I give you one minute to think about it. No need to consider entering the underground shelter—it’s useless. The countdown starts now. After one minute..."
Ram looked at Xinghe, who smiled back, her gaze fixed on the submarine.
Then, Ram’s eyes widened, and so did Gao Yuan’s, in disbelief.
The sea was churning, the water rising, followed by splashes, and then, abruptly, the black silhouette of a submarine’s sail breached the surface.
Behind the submarine’s sail, on top of the hull, there was a large, bulky object that resembled a tank turret—an incongruous addition that looked as though the submarine was outfitted with a tank cannon.
The submarine fully emerged from the water.
Then, the hatch at the top of the sail opened, and next, a silvery, gleaming figure, with two glowing ribbons trailing behind it, emerged—looking like a humanoid suit of armor.
That thing had a colloquial name.
Mecha.
Everyone stopped what they were doing, stopped shouting, even stopped breathing, watching silently, transfixed by the submarine and the mecha atop it.
The mecha’s head seemed to move slightly, then blue lights flared from the back, and the mecha took off, or rather leapt up, traversing a distance of over thirty meters in an arcing trajectory, then landed on one knee with one hand on the ground—a superhero-style landing.
Afterwards, the superhero-like figure began moving at high speed, heading straight for Gao Yuan.
The mecha came to a halt in front of Gao Yuan, who then looked up at the two-meter-tall mecha. Through the clear visor on the head of the mech, he saw a familiar face.
The mecha also lowered its head to look at Gao Yuan, and then, the person inside said gently, "Brother, I’m here."
