The Ultimate Chance-Chapter 56
"Don’t be so dramatic." She grabbed the phone from his hands and ended the call. "I don’t need a doctor any more than you do. In this unpredictable city, I think it’s best to leave emergency medical services to people who actually need it instead of calling paramedics for something as petty as this."
"But you’re..."
"Ever heard of over the counter drugs? I have some of those in my bag so you really have nothing to worry about." She returned to her room and just as she said, she returned with a pill which she swallowed as he watched. "Can I order some clothes now? Hell knows what happened for them to cancel my order from last night."
"That’s not enough." He picked her off the floor without a warning and placed her on the couch, then brought a cotton blanket from his room and wrapped her in it.
"What’s the meaning of this?" She struggled out of the bundle in vain.
"If it isn’t already clear, you don’t need to order any clothes because you won’t be needing any. You are not leaving the room today, unless you feel better." He said with no room for negotiation.
"I’m alright, Damon. Which part of this don’t you understand?" She poked a hand out of the bundle, only for it to be shoved back in by him.
He sat next to her with his arms around her to prevent her from getting out. "The part where you are burning at almost forty degrees but still think you are okay. Don’t you feel any different?"
She shook her head. She did feel a little tired but that was it. It was nothing different from what she’d feel after a long day of work.
"Look. I went through a rough pregnancy and did odd jobs at the same time. What makes you think a little fever would weaken me?"
He knew she was only trying to prove she could still move around and have a meeting without feeling any discomfort but it broke his heart. Thanks to his absence, she’d had to deal with everything on her own. She had become accustomed to working through everything even if the sky fell.
Mina had even mentioned that soon after Vaillant Telecommunications kicked off, she had had Angel, and she’d held a conference meeting on the morning after he was born.
Remembering the only thing that could get her to slow down, he poked her nose. "It’s always about work for you, whether it hails or shines."
"And everyone in Deciville does too. You did say the weather is unpredictable. Does this mean they hole themselves up in their rooms all day?" She countered.
"No they don’t." The fish was hooked. "But they don’t walk around with a potential flu either. What if they transmitted it to their loved ones, especially their kids?"
"Angel," she thought aloud. "He wouldn’t handle it."
"So let me take care of you. I’ll help you set up conference calls for all your meetings and once you feel better, we can return to Imperium." He finally managed to convince her.
As if the weather was in cahoots with him, a heavy downpour begun.
"I know you wanted this all along but fine. I could use a break anyway." She relented, to his relief. He must have made a deal with someone in the celestial realm to immobilize her.
"However, I have a condition."
"Anything."
"Can I get some snacks?" She requested. "Being locked up in here, I may as well have something to munch on."
"Certainly. I’ll ask Kelly to grab some. What would you like?"
She grabbed the chance to fire off a list of everything he would have denied her in the past. He didn’t utter a word about the need to take care of her health even when she asked for a tub of ice cream.
"While at it, can I have burritos for lunch? You can pre-order them, thanks." She took advantage to ask for more.
"What burritos? You look a weak burrito yourself." He scolded her, but even so, she heard him tell the concierge about it. There certainly were perks to being a weak burrito on the couch.
The snacks arrived in no time but just when she thought she would be allowed to have anything she wanted, Damon kept the ice cream and cookies away.
"You can’t have sugar and cold food when you have a flu." He explained and kept them away in the mini fridge.
"But I want to. Can I have a little? Just a tiny spoon?"
He ignored her plea and gave her a bag of barbecue spicy chips. Meeting her pleading eyes, he nearly caved. "Don’t give me that."
Knowing that he would n
He scooped the ice cream onto an ice cream cup and melted it before giving it to her. Although there was nothing icy about it, she haever resist it, she batted her eyelids sadly.
"Fine. Just a spoonful." He pinched the space between his eyes helplessly. Where did women learn to do that anyway? It was the exact gaze Mabella gave him when she asked for something he wouldn’t usually say yes to.ppily dipped her chips into it.
He looked horrified. "All that flavor, and you still want to dip it into ice cream?"
"Sugar and spice." She tasted it and licked her lips. "It’s the perfect combination. Do you want to have a taste?"
"Certainly not." He shook his head, but he was certain she was right. She was spicy and they did make the best pair.
"I wasn’t talking about us." She clarified when she sensed his eyes on her as though he had misunderstood her.
"Me either." He continued staring down at her.
"I just found the perfect way to tame down a tigress." He smiled.
Knowing he was talking about her, she glared at him and looked like a helpless cat doing so.
He patted her head of ruffled hair. "Roll her into a burrito. What you have now is a kitten peeking through a blanket, and her paws are full of snacks so she can’t even scratch at you."
She rolled her eyes. "You haven’t changed a single bit. You still like making fun of me."
"Neither have you." He wiped a dollop of cream off her lips. "You still love snacks."
"They add spice to life. What’s there not to like about them?" She made up a reason that had nothing to do with her love for snacks. "Hey, I have an idea. Netflix!"
He was going to say no and she knew it, so she grabbed his arm. "You didn’t make me rest so you would exhaust yourself, did you? Come on, let’s relax a little bit."
He carried her to the couch where they had a clearer view of the screen. She wanted to apologize for making him do everything for her but he looked happy doing it so she kept her remark to herself.
He brought her the remote control and gave her his account details to log in.
"Horror?"
"It’s the best kind of movie to watch on a stormy day." She suggested.
"I say we go for a series since we have the whole day. Anabelle? It’s horror."
"Fine." It was an old series and she had heard a lot about it but hadn’t watched it. She had to agree that if they chose a movie, they would spend most of the day going through movie descriptions and only two hours actually watching any.
He picked the first episode but didn’t play it.
"What is it?" She asked.
"Let’s watch it together to the end. Deal?"
"Deal?" She was not aware of the trap he had just set for her.
The first episode started playing and she was so absorbed in it that she didn’t catch him staring at her several times. When she finally did, she was confused. "Is it too boring?" She paused it. "If you don’t like it, we can choose something else. We have the whole day to choose, anyway."
"It’s interesting. I just...can’t get this out of my mind."
"What?" She asked him wide-eyed with speculation.
"Did you ever regret it?"
"Being with you? Of course I did. I thought we loved each other. Well, I loved you and I thought you felt the same way. Then you left without breaking up with me. You didn’t even respect what we had enough to say goodbye..." It was something he already knew and her accusation didn’t seem to faze him, so she reconsidered his question. "Are you asking whether I regretted having Angel?"
He nodded.
"No. Never. I wasn’t ready to be a mother either but when I found out, I was happy—unlike you."
He nodded. "Then why..." He dropped his question instead of asking it and played the episode. "Let’s just watch our series."
She agreed with a small nod, but she couldn’t help wondering what he was going to ask. He probably had a misunderstanding about her. Several times, she considered insisting for him to ask what he wanted to know but she gave up every time.
It was possible that that Mina was right and there was a misunderstanding, but if it turned out to be something that might trigger a fight, it wouldn’t be worth it. It was already good enough that they could spend time in a hotel suite and watch a series instead of biting each other’s head off. Deciding to ask him about it later, she rested her head on his shoulder and focused her attention on the screen.
