Chapter 52: Ch 52: Cornered - Part 3

By the time I reached my room, I had calmed down. What happened with Lynn still bothered me, but I did not let it get to me.

Outside, the sun had started to set, painting the world a beautiful red color, and I felt drawn to it.

"The sky is beautiful at the moment, right? Even I want to go out and enjoy this. Shit... I did not mean to startle you."

I lashed out without meaning to when I heard that voice speak to me, and my hand almost collided with Sasha’s face.

Thankfully, her reflexes were fast, so she was able to take a step back in time. And due to her powers as a healer, she was also able to heal the small wound I left on her.

"A-Are you alright? I did not mean to hit you. This was an accident..."

I clarified before the situation could turn sour.

I had no idea how much teamwork would be needed in the next few days, but I did want the cooperation of these people.

Sasha just blinked before she waved her hand with a small laugh.

"There is no need to be like that. I understand that accidents happen. This is not the first time I have been injured like this, so there is no need for you to be worried. And as you can see, I heal fast. In that sense, I am the tank for this team."

The healer confirmed, but I still felt a bitter taste in my mouth.

Just because someone healed fast did not mean getting hurt didn’t hurt them. And what could they even do if they were injured beyond healing in the first place?

"Whatever you are thinking about, forget about it. Come, have dinner with us and have a good night’s sleep. The real struggle will start tomorrow."

Sasha confirmed and grabbed my wrist. Before I knew it, I was sitting adjacent to her at the dining table, and Joshua gave a small speech about the championship.

When I went back to my room, I had a lot on my mind that I wanted to think about. The black mass that I had left behind was asleep and had no intention of waking up and talking.

I also felt my eyes close as my body felt tired. And I finally closed my eyes and allowed my body to relax.

I dreamed of nothing, and I woke up as soon as I felt a presence in my room.

"Manet, you should wake up now. Otherwise, we will be late for the first round."

Sam’s voice woke me up, and I sat up like a trained soldier.

The beta looked startled to see me suddenly standing like a zombie, but he calmed his racing heart quickly and gave me a shaky smile.

"I-It’s good to see you awake. The championship’s first round will start in about two hours. You should get ready and have some breakfast. We will leave in about one and a half hours."

Sam told me the timeline for things, and I nodded.

I quickly got ready, but just before I left the room, I took one last look back and then grabbed that black mass I had already transferred into a smaller bottle I could keep in my pocket.

"Hey, are we moving?"

The black mass asked, and I glared at it.

"If you know what is good for you, then you will keep your mouth shut. I do not have time for your chatter today."

I threatened the black mass, but it did not look particularly threatened.

Still, it closed its mouth, and I quickly left the room to have breakfast.

It was the same affair as last night, where Joshua yapped more about his intentions and how they needed to make it past the first few rounds no matter what.

Everyone else ignored him, so I followed their example, and before I knew it, I was standing in front of the first venue along with our team.

"There is no need to feel nervous, Manet. You should depend on your team. We will get you through this."

Joshua assured me, and at this point, I felt like he was trying to reassure himself more than he was trying to reassure me.

My mask was securely covering my face, but I felt a small smile of amusement spread behind my mask.

"I understand. I will depend on you and the rest of my teammates."

I assured him, but Joshua did not relax. If anything, he looked even more nervous as he looked around.

"Don’t mind Joshua. He has... just a bad experience with teammates. Especially since he got betrayed quite hard last time. You see, before you, we had an alpha teammate whom Joshua looked after a lot. But that alpha decided to change teams right in the middle of the championship. Joshua just doesn’t want it to happen again."

Sam told me the real truth behind the vacancy of this team.

I watched as Joshua looked toward a team on the other side of the room and narrowed his eyes.

I could read longing and more emotions in his eyes. But as soon as he noticed that I was looking his way, Joshua narrowed his eyes.

[Attention everyone. The first round of the championship—the writing segment—will be starting. Please head to the random number that you have been given on your system and start the test.]

The announcement cut off the nervous energy in the air, and I looked at the system screen in front of me. It told me that I needed to head toward section B-54.

I looked at my team, and no one else was in section B.

"Manet, good luck. Remember, you can count on us if you ever feel like it."

My teammates assured me, and I headed toward section B.

The people around me looked confident, and then the test paper was handed over to me, and I watched the smile quickly drain off their faces.

I picked up the paper as well and had to cringe. Half of it was traditional paper, but the other half was related to me... or rather, to the image of Ace that the hunter’s association had created.

From the first mission Ace went to the last one, they were all questions on the test.

I had a good enough memory for these things, so I could recall these cases accurately. But I knew for a fact that the real information I had and the one the hunter’s association released were different.

[I’m sure you all noticed the ’special bonus’ section on the quiz this time. In the happiness of Ace’s return, we have decided to make him a part of the championship this time. I hope you all have a fun time during the quiz.]

The announcer continued, and a lot of people flinched.

Even I felt like the questions related to Ace were useless information people did not need to know about.

But then again, it was not like the other questions were any better or skill-based. It was clear that the one who had made this test was not a hunter, much less had ever gone to a dungeon in the first place.
