Chapter 23: Ch 23: Taking in a Stray - Part 3

Lynn’s face twisted into a half-frown and for a few seconds my instincts warned me to be careful of an incoming attack.

However, Lynn was not the no. 1 Hunter for nothing and he managed to pull himself together before looking away from me.

"Sorry. You’re right. I have no control over what you choose to do. I just... Can I get a cup of coffee?"

The top Hunter asked, his face still troubled

He reminded me of Erin a lot, especially with the way he frowned and the way he chewed his lips... and maybe the shape and color of his eyes matched Erin’s amber ones as well... and just maybe...

’Tsk, this guy is not Erin. I need to stop projecting Erin on other people. It’s time for me to let go of my past.’

I looked at Lynn who seemed to be waiting for me to say something. But there was only one answer I gave him.

"Your order will be ready in a few minutes. I will call for you once it’s ready."

I turned around to ring his order in and I waited until it finished brewing before I came back to him.

The no. 1 Hunter was checking something on his phone when I arrived and I coughed to get his attention. But Lynn did not look my way, even when I knew he had heard me.

With no choice left, I called out to him.

"The order for Lynn is ready. Please come and take your order."

As soon as I called his name, Lynn walked over to me and grabbed his coffee before he took a sip and almost spat it out.

"Ouch-! Hot-! It’s hot-! I think I burned my tongue."

He complained and I rolled my eyes.

The coffee was not nearly hot enough to hurt an S-class Hunter. But still, I needed to do something before people started paying attention to what was happening.

"Open your mouth and show me where you are hurt."

The Hunter obliged and opened his mouth. But I could not see anything from the angle. I had to tiptoe and still, this giant of an Alpha towered over me.

"Tsk, come down here, darn it. Do you think I can see whether you burned your tongue or not from this angle?"

I felt frustrated and decided to take the easy approach — to grab Lynn’s front shirt and pull him down.

The last thing I saw were his eyes widening before I grabbed his cheeks and forced him to open his mouth.

As expected, his mouth was fine and he had no burns so I let him go. But my luck went from bad to worse when I heard three gasps coming from my side.

"O-Oh my-! I did not know you were already... I thought... Are we disturbing you both?"

Emma asked, looking between me and Lynn before casting a glance toward Theo who was standing behind her. Ben just looked amused at my awkwardness.

And speaking of Theo, he had gone completely silent as his eyes darted between me and Lynn as well.

I took this as my chance to slip away from Lynn and walk toward the trio. I did turn around to cast a glance at Lynn once.

"Your tongue is completely fine, so stop being dramatic. And if you do feel a burn, you should go to the hospital and stop worrying me like this. Emma, I am going to take a break now. Dealing with our customer has made my head hurt."

I tried to discreetly tell Lynn not to use such a trick again. But instead of looking dejected, he looked excited and even gave me a smile in return.

"So, you are worried about me? Seems like I will need to be more careful in the future so as to not worry you."

He spoke before he grabbed the remainder of his coffee and drank it in one go.

I could not tell if he was doing this to infuriate me or make me feel better. Not that I cared about it much.

But what I did care about was him ruffling my hair as he walked past me toward the exit. Some of his pheromones clung to my hair as a result of this.

"Once again, I apologize for the mishap that happened because of my foolish employees. I will make sure to give them a good lashing and put them on probation. You will also be compensated for going through something traumatic."

The no.1 Hunter promised before he left the café with a grin.

I was a little stunned to notice what happened at first, but then I recalled an important fact.

"Darn it-! That stupid Hunter forgot to pay me for the coffee this time. Ugh, I want to strangle him— cough— maybe I really need that break."

I felt eyes on me as I raged and realized that Emma was looking half amused and half worried about me.

"Yeah. Maybe you should hurry up and take your break before you do anything stupid. Don’t worry about the counter. I will handle it and I will show Theo around as well and get him familiarized with the café."

I nodded and avoided looking at Theo. The poor puppy-like Alpha was giving me begging looks to let him come along, but I wanted to be alone.

Theo pretended he did not notice my intentions and I pretended Theo did not exist at that moment.

"Alright, let’s get back to work. Theo, come here. This is where you need to stand—"

Emma took charge of Theo and for a minute I was afraid that Theo would break her wrist in order to try and reach me.

But thankfully, he folded like a good and obedient dog and went with Emma.

My eyes darted toward Theo’s back to see him sulking but still working for a few minutes. And while I observed Theo, someone else observed me.

Ben chuckled, causing me to stop my observation and turn toward him.

"Sorry-! I know I am not supposed to laugh at others’ misfortune, but your life seems a little too interesting and funny."

Ben complimented but I did not feel the need to justify his words. Instead, I went back to my room and threw myself on the bed.

’What a fucking long day. It feels like so much happened and yet, nothing happened at the same time. Well, not true-! I brought Theo back, so at least that is something.’

Sleep threatened to overcome me but I fought against it. I still had work to finish, but the lull of sleep was too hard for me to beat.

In the end, my eyes closed and before I knew it, my body had relaxed and fallen asleep.

Someone must have come to check up on me in between but they must have decided not to disturb me once they saw that I was asleep.

The sleep was good but I found myself waking up three hours later and my brain felt like it did not want to function.

My body, however, demanded I refresh myself with a glass of water and a trip to the washroom, so that’s what I did — mindlessly follow orders from my body.
