The Summer King and His Winter Bride-Chapter 26: Magical Moments
The morning sunlight spilled into Caroline’s chambers casting its warm touch across the bedsheets where she lay. A gentle breeze carrying the scent of honeysuckle and ripe citrus disturbed the gossamer fabric that lay gently on the divan. She took a deep breath of fresh air and calmed her nerves. Today she was going to marry a king.
The seamstress had successfully blended the two cultures of Winter and Summer on her dress, she thought satisfied. Silver and pale blue embroidery met sun-kissed gold and rose pin tones on her wedding dress. A veil made of an enchanted gold and silver glitter dust would appear and disappear on her head falling down to the skirt of her wedding gown.
"I am not leaving Winter Court life merely merging my life and customs with Summer Court life, I wonder how mother felt on her wedding day," she whispered.
Yet she knew exactly what her mother would say to her on this day. It would have been something along these lines.
"Darling, I hope you have a glorious marriage filled with love and devotion, do not worry about the past or the mistakes and choices of those around you focus on yourself and the king today and just enjoy the magical moment of becoming a bride, a wife and a Summer Queen."
Yes she thought her mother would have wanted the best most practical outcome for her. She would not fail her in this moment but make her proud. As she knew she watched over her from heaven above.
Her thoughts were interrupted as three maids entered with flowing gold and ivory robes, their hands carried trays of scented oils, jewelry and rich fabrics. As they moved about her in fluid grace, setting down rose-scented water in bowls, laying out her wedding gown and preparing a large full length mirror for her to gaze at herself after all was prepared. She calmed her nerves and surrendered herself to their artful care of making her look every part a bride.
A young woman with dark curls and sun-kissed skin approached her with a soft smile.
"Shall we begin, Your Majesty?" She asked solemnly.
Caroline nodded once and they began.
They massaged a mixture of fragrant oils along her hands, arms, shoulders, thighs and legs, imbuing her skin with the scent of summer blossoms. Each touch felt like a whispered blessing, a prayer not just a ritual for beauty but symbolic of her transition from maidenhood to becoming a married woman. For today was not just her wedding day but her coronation as well.
The maids continued their work with weaving delicate sunstones into strands of her pale blonde hair. Their whispered songs of love and life filling the atmosphere with a sense of new love, new life and purpose. Amidst the exhilarating golden warmth of happiness that began to settle over her, she reached for a single silver snowflake hairpin a delicate reminder of her homeland to entwine into her hair.
A soft knock on the door, made the attendants freeze momentarily, as a handmaiden stepped inside her chambers carrying a small velvet box.
"From His Majesty, a gift for you." The handmaiden announced.
Caroline opened it to find a bracelet that was made of fine gold intertwined with frost white crystals that shone like moonlight with a note that lay just beneath it:
You bring winter’s quiet beauty to my summer’s fire. I will wait for you at the altar. Love, Casimir.
She smiled and as warmth bloomed in her chest at his sweet gesture.
The attendants then stepped back as they admired her in her wedding gown which was a masterpiece of both worlds shimmering in the morning light. Soft ivory silk in pale blue and rose pink with embroidery that shifted from silver frost at the bodice to golden sunbursts along the hem. A union of seasons of the Winter and Summer Courts.
"You look radiant, Your Highness," one of them said quietly.
"I am ready now," Caroline said as she admired herself in the mirror.
The dawn of the golden glow of the Summerland sun, painted the sky in streaks of soft amber and rose pink. The great palace was adorned with cascading white, pink and blue wisteria and golden lilies.
The delicate fragrance of flowers mingled with the crisp morning breeze as the grand court yard had been transformed into an ethereal garden of light and blossoms.
The marble floors shone pearly white and shimmering silk runners embroidered with the symbol of the Winter Court and Summer Court, decorated the area as a silent testament of the upcoming union between two realms.
Queen Caroline took a steadying breath, her heart thrumming with a quiet intensity at the significance of this political union; it was the first step into an unknown future one she would create with the choices she was about to make.
Beyond the towering doors, King Casimir awaited her entrance as he stood beneath a great archway decorated with yellow and red marigolds, his white and golden tunic shimmering beneath the sunlight. A cloak of crimson lined with gold filigree draped over his shoulders which marked the Summerlands sovereign.
His fingers curled and uncurled in anticipation as he reigned in the storm of emotions within. He had come to the Winter Court to seek the hand of its queen and claim a bride not out of duty alone but out of something more which he wanted to prove.
The doors finally opened to the song of the lily of the valley on stringed instruments such as the harp and violin.
As Caroline stepped onto the soft earth, flowers began to blossom in her wake it was an enchanted greeting of the Summerlands, welcoming its new queen. Gasps of wonder and excitement could have been heard from the crowd present to witness the wedding ceremony.
She entered glowing with hope and happiness as she took each step forward to the altar her eyes found Casimir and she saw the tears of joy that gathered in his eyes.
She could not help but smile mirroring his expression as the veil disappeared allowing the groom to gaze upon the beauty of his bride.
The ceremony was presided over by the High Priest draped in robes of celestial gold and silver. He spoke of unity, of the balance between light and shadow, summer and winter, fire and frost.
Caroline made her vows and at what point she found it difficult to say what she wanted to say but she pressed on as Casimir wove his fingers through her encouraging her onwards, as she slid the ring onto his finger.
Nothing prepared her for the tears that threatened to spill when she heard him recite from a paper in his hands:
I, Casimir Sol Aurelius take you Caroline Eira DeWynter as my lawfully wedded wife and as my Queen of the Summer Court. To have and to hold, to honour and cherish, from this day forth for better for worse, for richer for poorer in sickness and in health till death do us part. I hope to be more than just your husband but your partner in life in everything you dream or hope of accomplishing.
I will be there,
When disaster strikes,
In chaos and strife,
When hope is lost,
When fear thrives.
I will be there,
When storms rage,
When mountains shake,
When pain is present,
When life fades.
I will be there,
When the sun shines,
When you smile,
When joy abides,
When love comes alive.
So long as you’re near,
Never forget I am here,
With you until the end,
Even when seasons change,
My love for you will remain.
The crowd rose and clapped, some even shouted for joy and some teared up. King Casimir laughed as tears of happiness ran down his handsome face.
Magic hummed in the air as the priest bound their hands together with ribbons of white, gold and crimson signifying their union. Both courts responded to the act as they whispered blessings and prayers of grace upon the newly married couple.
The priest then uttered over the happy couple his blessing saying:
"May this bond be sealed by the light of the sun, the fall of snow, the fire’s warmth and the winter’s kiss of snow. May your love remain steadfast as the mountains and endless as the sky."
They placed their hands upon the large glowing yellow gem stone in the center of the hall and watched as gold and silver light swirled around their fingers and bodies. The bond had been recognized by the forces of nature who promised to bless and restore anything broken. The magic of the Summerlands and the Winterlands embraced them sealing their union before the heavens.
King Casimir then bent his head and kissed Queen Caroline full on the lips.
The crowd cheered and the wedding bells rang as the gathered courtiers and nobles erupted in shouts of joy and applause for witnessing the happy couple and of something more powerful than a mere alliance.
A love, that in time, might change their world.
The wedding feast was a spectacular event of splendor to behold in the grand hall of the palace where gold chandeliers hung, casting their gentle glow of light.
The long banquet tables overflowed with the rich food from both the Summerlands and the Winterlands.
Platters of roasted pheasant and vension glazed with honey and lavender were served with an assortment of nuts and various fruits.
Fine wines filled the glasses from the sun drenched vineyards of Casimir’s kingdom alongside crystalline plates of winter berries, iced cakes dusted with silver sugar and chilled cider infused with pine and juniper from Caroline’s kingdom.
Laughter and music rang clearly through the air which resonated with the melodies of harps and flutes weaving together in harmony.
The first dance was a moment of intimacy amidst the grandeur as Casimir led Caroline onto the marble floor his warm touch encouraging her as they moved together as one.
She found herself relaxing into his embrace caught up in the rhythm of the dance so much so that the world around her blurred until all that remained was his strong heart beat against her palms and all the love for her swirling in his eyes.
As evening descended, fire dancers and court jesters entertained the guests, while noble lords and ladies joined in lively reels beneath the vaulted ceiling adorned with enchanted constellations.
The stars themselves seemed to twinkle in time with the revelry, casting their celestial glow over the celebration. It was a feast not just of opulence but of unity, a true testament that two courts, once divided, could come together in joy, in laughter, and perhaps, in love.
As the night unfolded, enchanted lanterns were released to float into the inky night sky, casting a soft glow over the celebration. Casimir led her in a dance, and as their feet moved, tiny golden sparks flared beneath them, swirling in the air like fireflies. The court rejoiced, throwing handfuls of enchanted petals that shaped themselves into fleeting constellations of phoenixes, stags, and entwined birds. As symbols of blessing of fertility and prosperity.
The world quieted as they slipped away to a secluded balcony which gave them a view of the starry sky. As Caroline closed her eyes for a second and leaned against the railing breathing in the jasmine and citrus scented warm air. He spoke.
"Are you happy, darling?" Casimir’s voice asked gentle almost searching.
She turned to face him and saw the golden glow of the lanterns reflected in his eyes, slowly she reached for his hand and threading her fingers through his she whispered, "yes darling I am."
His thumb brushed over her knuckles, a quiet reassuring gesture.
Above their heads, the Summer Court mages wove one final enchantment into the sky. A form of constellations showing their story. A lone star, wandering into unfamiliar skies. A sun, burning bright, drawing the star closer. Finally, the two separate lights merging into one great radiant light.
Caroline exhaled softly because for the first time in a long while, she felt she had finally found it.
Home.
