Chapter 47: Literary Debate.

"WOW! Is that the mask of the Silver Dragon of the West? Did you put it on for him?" Gerald asked with fascination.

Noelia turned toward the boy. Normally she would have panicked at talking to him, however wearing her mask, that didn’t happen.

When the girl wore the mask she "transformed" into a completely different person. She started acting like the character from her favorite novel, whose nickname she had stolen for herself.

However, the emotion caused by someone knowing that novel made her break character and stop acting.

"Yes! Do you know Chronicles of the Seventh Heaven? It’s my favorite novel! The best literary work in the world!" the girl exclaimed with excitement.

Whenever she talked about something she liked, she lost herself in emotion, though it wasn’t strange. After all, Noelia wasn’t always shy.

That’s why if they talked to her about a topic that interested her, she totally lost her fear of socializing.

"Of course I know it," Gerald said, raising an eyebrow. "And I can tell you that what you just said is an absolute fallacy."

He answered.

Gerald was surprised when he discovered he had passed the admission trial.

In itself, even the rules were deceptive so people would show their true nature. Gerald didn’t understand what had made him pass.

After all, he was defeated at the beginning of the trial without being able to defeat anyone.

In fact, he hadn’t even been able to considerably damage his enemy.

He had completely shown how deficient he was.

What Gerald didn’t know was that there were spectators and judges watching the combat, and what allowed him to pass the trial was his bravery.

He not only showed an impressive display of power, but had also managed to impress the judges with his tenacity.

To pass the trial, one of two things was needed.

Either power or heroic spirit.

If someone had great power but didn’t know how to be a hero, they would go to the academy to learn precisely how to be a hero.

They would be taught about justice, values, and given tests to see if they had the mentality worthy of a hero.

If instead they weren’t so powerful but showed they had the courage and determination a hero needs to have, then they would pass the trial even being weak.

If a hero only lacked power, it was enough to train them.

They would be given resources and subjected to trials to become stronger.

The heroic would be given strength, and the strong would be given heroism.

Obviously both would train both aspects at the academy, but for each one would focus more on their deficiency.

That’s why Gerald had passed the trial, because he didn’t give up against Aku even being at a disadvantage.

That mentality was very necessary to be a hero.

On the other hand, if someone had both power and moral deficiencies, the academy would see instructing them as a waste of resources.

Only those who demonstrated mediocrity in both evaluated aspects would fail.

"Absolute fallacy? What do you mean?" Noelia asked with confusion and somewhat indignant.

She couldn’t stand people disparaging the works she liked, and always jumped to defend them.

Gerald adjusted his glasses at that question. He was waiting for such a question from Noelia.

However, unfortunately for her, one of Gerald’s favorite sports was debating, and he was an absolute expert in that area.

"I mean you said that novel is the best literary work in the world. That’s a fallacy. It’s not even the best light novel that exists," Gerald commented with an analytical air, as if they were talking about something super serious.

Noelia frowned behind her mask, looking at Gerald with rage as she felt a burning run through her body.

"What are you saying! Chronicles of the Seventh Heaven is the best novel in history! Its narrative is super poetic, and its characters memorable! Plus the protagonist is super cool!" the girl exclaimed with indignation.

But Gerald didn’t flinch. He simply shook his finger while clicking his tongue.

"That that novel has more quality than the average light novel doesn’t place it as the best. Whether you like it or not, it still falls into many clichés. Moreover, even if it were the best light novel that exists, it’s nowhere near the best literary work in history," Gerald responded with an icy and calculating tone.

Noelia grimaced.

"But it’s my favorite! How can you mess with that masterpiece?" Noelia exclaimed with growing indignation.

Gerald let out a sigh while shaking his head.

"First, that it’s your favorite novel doesn’t mean anything because that’s something subjective," the boy affirmed. "Besides, I never said it was bad, simply that it wasn’t the best."

Gerald answered as his glasses reflected the light.

Noelia tilted her head, somewhat confused.

Hearing that Gerald didn’t hate her favorite work, she calmed down, however the discussion wasn’t going to end there.

"But you said it yourself, it’s subjective. Can’t I say that novel is the best for me?" the young woman answered with curiosity.

Gerald shook his head.

"No, since you said the best literary work in the world. Evaluating a literary work doesn’t have to be subjective if you take it to a universal level. For example, The Lord of the Rings is a much more elaborate story than the average light novel. Or for example, Harry Potter, even being a more childish work, has a very well-elaborated world with incredible magical realism, undoubtedly superior to the average light novel."

The boy explained seriously.

"Moreover, if we want to find a good narrative, we can go to the classics. If I had to tell you the best work in history, it would undoubtedly be Don Quixote, a work that revolutionized the literature of its time, which could undoubtedly be placed at number one, though honestly I wouldn’t place any in the podium, since determining the best literary work in history is something subjective, but what isn’t is affirming that the works I’ve named are better than Chronicles of the Seventh Heaven."

Noelia grimaced behind her mask.

She really couldn’t deny any of those arguments, but it was difficult to admit defeat.

Then someone appeared, interrupting the discussion.

"Silver Dragon of the West! It’s you!" a voice then said.

Ariel had arrived.
