Chapter 232: Confirmed Decision

When Rory came back after putting Ellie to a nap, she saw Mrs. Delport and Liam sitting in the living room in silence. She didn’t hear Liam screaming for the past thirty minutes she was there, so she couldn’t even guess what they talked about.

Mrs. Delport stood up and walked to her. "Help me with the lunch," she asked Rory.

Rory checked on Liam. He was staring at the floor. He looked dejected. Rory’s first instinct was to run to him and comfort him.

"Come on," Mrs. Delport called her before she ran to him.

Rory could see that Mrs. Delport wants to talk to her about something and so she followed her.

"He’s... Let him be alone for some time," she said.

Rory only got more curious about what Mrs. Delport told him that was so shocking for him.

"What did you tell him?" She asked.

Mrs. Delport sighed and started plating the dishes. Rory was more surprised. What is that they talked about that she cannot know?

"He’s changed a lot..." Mrs. Delport said after some time.

"You think?" Rory said popping a grape in her mouth.

"You too..." Mrs. Delport said after staring at her for some time.

"Come on, Mrs. Delport. Don’t be like this. What’s with this...weird~"

Mrs. Delport patted her on the shoulder. "I never understood what your grandmother found with your husband, but he is not bad."

"Ugh, no man is up to your mark, Mrs. Delport. You have very high standards that the man you find perfect wouldn’t even exist in books," she snorted. "By the way, why did you leave Mr. Delport? Did he tell you that your desserts are salty?" she asked with a chuckle.

"My desserts are not salty! A pinch of salt just adds to the~"

"Yeah, a pinch. Not a tablespoon..." Rory said in a sarcastic tone.

"You, brat!" Mrs. Delport tried to hit her with the kitchen towel on her shoulder.

"Seriously, Mrs. Delport... Where is Mr. Delport?" Rory asked.

She has never heard Mrs. Delport talk about her husband. She didn’t even know if he was dead or alive. She has never seen Mrs. Delport go on dates either. Rory tried to ask her grandfather, but he didn’t know many details about Mrs. Delport either. But even her grandfather was a little scared about the loyalty Mrs. Delport had for her grandmother.

"You really want to know about my husband?" Mrs. Delport asked.

"Yeah," Rory nodded. She very much loved to know.

She had a hunch that he might have been a bad man and her grandmother must have rescued her. That explained the loyalty.

"But then I’ll have to kill you. Will that be fine?" Mrs. Delport asked.

Rory gulped. If it was anyone else, she would have laughed. But she was talking to Mrs. Delport. If she said that she will kill her, she will kill her.

Rory once watched how precise Mrs. Delport was when she killed a chicken. And she was too good at skinning a hog too. That woman has secrets, Rory knew.

But it’s like what they say- curiosity killed the cat.

Her curiosity got the better of her.

"Kill me. But tell me who your husband is. Is he still alive?" Rory asked.

"No," Mrs. Delport shrugged.

Rory looked at her keenly waiting for her to speak further.

"Heard of the singing revolution?" Mrs. Delport asked.

"I guess so... Without bloodshed people overthrew~"

Mrs. Delport scoffed.

Rory raised her brows.

"No revolution can be won without spilling blood. Do you think those who were in power just packed their bags and left because they were afraid of some demonstrations and songs?" Mrs. Delport said.

"Well..." Rory gulped.

Don’t tell me...

"I was the wife of... come here..." Mrs. Delport gestured her to come closer.

Rory hesitated as she wondered if Mrs. Delport will bite off her earlobe. But again, she was curious, and she stepped closer.

Mrs. Delport whispered a name to Rory. It sounded familiar and not familiar at the same time. She decided to google that guy.

"You won’t find anything about him in google. His name is redacted from every file. He was erased from the history books," Mrs. Delport said.

"Oh?" Rory said. She wouldn’t have believed a word of it if it was in the past. But then, it involved her grandmother. It is entirely possible.

"He was an important person in the government, and he had this amazing habit of keeping a journal. He was cruel! He wanted me to wear skirts and didn’t allow me to wear pants. And he kept me hidden from everyone. He didn’t have mistresses though. If he had, I could have divorced him. But he didn’t leave that path open for me..." Mrs. Delport sighed.

Rory couldn’t understand why wearing a skirt would be cruel. She loved wearing skirts over pants or jeans even. But then she realized that it’s not about the skirt. It’s about not leaving her a choice. He kept her as a trophy in his house, hidden. He might have thought that he was treasuring her, but she must have felt like a caged bird.

"It was then I met your grandmother..." Mrs. Delport’s face brightened when she talked about Agnes. "There she was... the American who wore pantsuits and had men obey her commands. She turned to my hero! I handed over the journals that cruel man had in exchange for following her for the rest of my life. I wanted to wear pants and command men too. And I got to do that after getting an immense training. I have no regrets shooting that guy in his face. Ah, the face he made when he saw me with a handgun in front of him... I~"

"Alright," Rory didn’t want to hear more.

No matter what, she couldn’t imagine killing one’s husband point-blank like that. Poisoning or hiring a hitman... that she can get. But killing point-blank... that’s way too cold-blooded.

Maybe the oppression she faced made her react that way.

But then she realized it.

Mrs. Delport is a cold-blooded killer. Probably! that’s why she was able to stay close to her grandmother for all these years.

Are we even safe with her? 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"I knew you’d react this way," Mrs. Delport turned sad seeing the fear in Rory’s eyes.

Rory said nothing and hugged her. That calmed Mrs. Delport considerably. Whatever her past was, she was a part of their family as long as she knows. She cannot be afraid of her when all she did was protect her and help her till then.

"You grew up in a different world than me. I can never understand what you went through... so...I won’t judge you. And I still love you," Rory said from her heart.

Mrs. Delport patted her hand. "Don’t think too lowly of yourself, dear. You have a fighter in you too. And you surprised us all with your strength. It’s just... we are all different and the choices we make are different too," she said.

Rory agreed. "Did you have kids?" she asked.

Mrs. Delport paused for a moment, before resuming the plating.

"Your husband will talk to you about it. So don’t worry," she said and walked to the dining room.

Rory could see that she had touched a nerve by asking about her kids. Maybe she didn’t have kids, or maybe she lost them. Whatever, Mrs. Delport doesn’t have to tell her anything. And if she wants to not talk about it, she is not going to ask her about it again.

Liam looked pretty composed when they had lunch together. After some time, they left for Liam’s house. They were welcomed so warmly as always.

Liam gave the gifts they got to his sister. Claire cried seeing Liam holding the baby so tenderly. They all took many pictures together. Chubster brought his friends over and that was very awkward. But they had fun.

That night, Rory lay on Liam’s chest hugging him. It was odd for her husband to not start anything when the baby is asleep. Till then, whenever Ellie was asleep, he considered that as an invitation.

Maybe he is tired. She too was tired, and she almost fell asleep when Liam spoke.

"My mother... she never killed herself, Cherry," he said.

She blinked as her sleep disappeared. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She sat up and looked at him.

"She was getting better when... She recognized him... She talked to her therapist about it... She was not sure, but she was doubtful..."

Rory didn’t know what to say and she hugged him. "I’m so sorry, baby... I’m sorry..." she rubbed his back.

What Lennon did was beyond cruel.

"I am going to testify against him in court, Rory. I am going to testify in front of him. I don’t care!" he said.

Rory patted his back. He is emotional. And he might change his decision again. But she had a feeling that this is his confirmed decision.

"Your dad... does he..."

"Oh, Cherry," he hugged her. "You saw how happy he was, right? How can I..."

Rory was beyond happy. Her husband has really changed. Frank did everything to protect Liam and maybe it is his turn now.

But she didn’t know why Mrs. Delport told Liam about it.
