Chapter 990: The Polite Execution

Physical prowess.

Perfect shape.

Mister—god-forsaken—Benefactor.

All of it echoed in the suddenly quiet hall that only got interrupted by the sound of a musical instrument being hit by accident.

Eeek!

Cassian’s left eye twitched.

Around him, the foreign delegates went wide-eyed.

Rhys looked like he was on the verge of collapse.

And not far away, literally just beside Luca, someone else flinched for an entirely different reason.

Haunted by an all too familiar ghost of memories past, Xavier, who had looked borderline murderous just moments ago, now seemed... noticeably better.

With a complexion that suddenly recovered as if basking under the sun, he looked like he had won the lottery as he coughed once.

Then, as if suddenly remembering something important after hearing the sound, Luca gasped once again.

"Oh!"

How could he have possibly forgotten about Xavier?!

The proper handover had been interrupted towards the end, and he didn’t get the chance to part formally because of his nervousness.

He had initially wanted to talk about their dance and give praise, as his mother had taught him, but with Cassian coming over, those would have to be rescheduled for later.

But that didn’t mean he should have left his beloved standing in the middle of the dance floor!

"!!!"

That was something that shouldn’t have happened, and so Luca, who had been taught manners by so many hard-working individuals, needed to make corrections.

At least for the sake of their collective effort, and because he would never want to wrong his own Prince, he didn’t hesitate to move.

He turned immediately, reaching for his husband’s hand before pressing a gentle kiss against the back of it.

It was a soft and lingering kiss that Luca hoped would convey his sincerity.

"I really had the best time. And I would sincerely appreciate it if you could please wait for my return," he said with a bright and hopeful smile that, unbeknownst to him, probably blinded half the civilization.

Xavier, who had greater training, accepted it without hesitation.

He sure looked like a princess instead of the proud Prince he really was, but he was pretty damned sure it could have been worse. And with that smile and look of yearning before they even parted, what else could he do?

"Of course. I will wait for your return."

His tone was calm as he stepped back, though his gaze, which left his wife’s face, lingered on Cassian for just a moment.

"Mister Benefactor." 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

The greeting was polite.

Very curt and, for some reason, extremely annoying.

Given the supposed nature of the Federation, there really shouldn’t be honorifics for the kind of political system they allegedly had.

Now, that wasn’t really true for the elites, who still attempted to divide society based on the family standing they had before defecting from the Empire. But it was something they tried to hide when faced with the people of Solaris.

So while that horrible "honorific" was technically correct, simply using his name would have been far better.

Especially when the hostility in that greeting was palpable. He felt like he needed to bash something for good measure.

Cassian felt something twitch again. In fact, he was probably close to spasming, but he held it in, forcing himself to remain composed in front of everyone.

But if they wanted to take it too far, then so be it—

He wouldn’t hold back either.

He extended his hand toward Luca, deliberate and steady, offering it in the same way Luca had just treated Xavier.

He expected hesitation.

At least a flicker of fluster. If nothing else, that arrogant blood of a lesser noble would once again look like he wanted to dig his claws into someone.

It was probably a weird obsession, but he always liked it when faces contorted in such a way. He liked the unsettled look people would have when they were caught cornered.

Most of all, he was aware that he personally reveled in the moment right before it happened, so he made sure to keep his own expression in check.

Luca moved without pause.

He took Cassian’s hand and drew it closer, and the heir to the Federation felt his pulse speeding up as he awaited what was to come.

A kiss in front of everyone would feel like vindication.

But then—

Instead of the lips he was expecting, the heir to House Kyros then brought the back of Cassian’s hand to bump against Luca’s forehead.

Maybe it was his imagination, but at that point, it felt like everything stopped completely.

Breathing, blinking, and even gasping.

All of it dialed down into nothing as people’s brains tried to catch up.

But while the hall went dead silent, Luca simply blinked, mildly surprised but otherwise unbothered.

Because back from Tesseris, there was nothing strange about it.

After all, it was normal, practically expected, to ask elders or those with seniority for their blessings whenever they were to see each other.

If there was anything to be surprised about, he didn’t think the people of the Federation practiced that when no one in the Empire had done it before.

Well, not like he had done it a lot back in Tesseris, either, when he hadn’t been allowed near people.

But hey, with his body in great shape now, he sure could ask everyone for blessings!

The golden-eyed cadet suddenly found the unfolding events to be satisfying.

While he had reservations because of what Cassian attempted to pull off earlier, he now had a change of perception because of a few things.

Not only did the delegation head have a philanthropic side to him, but despite his frail body, which could only handle much slower dances, he even extended his generosity to someone like Luca.

Given all this, the heir of the Federation couldn’t be so bad.

Not when he was offering blessings so readily.

Luca released Cassian’s hand as the children back at Tesseris would, then beamed at him before saying, "Thank you so much, Mister Benefactor. Now, what do you say about dancing? Shall we?"
