Chapter 93: Divine Protection

Mistress Valeria smiled awkwardly at Elsa, she was surely proud of her granddaughter but she had no idea what was she talking about. "Dear, what is a doctor?" she finally asked.

"Oh, right. It is a healer grandma. As you know, there’s no magic in the other world, so people rely on Science to heal the body," Elsa explained.

"That must have been hard. It will take a while for people to get better and the pain will last for days," Valeria couldn’t imagine herself living in a place without magic, she would die instantly she thought.

"It has its pros and cons, just like here. By the way, do they have a kitchen here? I need to make some bread."

"Oh, no need dear, the cook will bring more food later."

"No Grandma, I will make some antibiotics to help cure the others that can’t be healed with magic."

Valeria was confused but she did not question Elsa anymore since she knew that her granddaughter knew what she was doing. When they arrived in the kitchen, Elsa ordered the cook and kitchen workers to bake a lot of bread.

"Princess, the patients need meat and vegetables more than bread," The cook said.

"I will use it for something else, I need the bread to spoil. I want them to produce molds," Elsa explained.

"Molds! My goodness princess, are you trying to make our soldiers more sick?" The cook exclaimed, completely doubting her competency.

Elsa didn’t like his tone and lost it, "Listen here, mister... Do what I say or do you want me to tell the king who is my grandpa by the way? He who adores me so much and wanted to please me to make up for the twenty-five years that we did not see each other. If I say to him that I want your head on a silver platter because you pissed me off by not baking a lot of bread, in order for me to save his people. I am sure he will not waste a second in serving your stubborn head to me right away."

The cook pursed his lips and bowed to Elsa, "Right away princess. I will bake you a lot of bread at this instant." The cook then turned around and ordered his assistants to bring him the necessary ingredients.

Elsa looked back to her grandmother only to find her smiling, trying to stop herself from laughing at the stubborn cook. Elsa pressed her lips to prevent herself from laughing too. She understood the cook’s hesitation but she just didn’t have the time to explain things that could take hours or even days for people like him to understand.

The two walked back to the infirmary to check on their patients when Valeria suddenly asked, "How is life in Novus, my dear?"

"I grew up without magic there. Mom never used it until she needed to. So back then, I found life there easy. We have cars and airplanes, to take us to different places faster. The technology is far more advanced, maybe because it was all we have there. People must innovate for them to survive in a world without magic. To save the lives of their loved ones and also make their lives easy," Elsa said.

As they walked back to the infirmary, they saw more carts carrying injured soldiers but no one had any serious injuries that they had to be worried about. Valeria gently grabbed Elsa’s arm stopping her from walking further.

"Elsa, I think I should teach you some defense spells in case of an attack then you are somehow protected," Valeria uttered. Elsa quickly nodded feeling excited about what she was about to learn.

Valeria led her to an open space away from the infirmary and people. After finding a good spot, Valeria showed Elsa what spell she was talking about. "Divinuum presidium," Valeria cast a yellowish orb-like aura covering Valeria’s whole body. It was as if she was inside an oval casing made of faint light.

Elsa dropped her jaw, it was the first time that she had seen a spell like that. "That’s so cool, Grandma! I definitely want to learn that!" she exclaimed in excitement.

"Before I teach you this, remember that this is a shield only to protect you from magic. This will not stop any physical weapons from penetrating it and hitting you. So this is only useful if you are up against a magic user," Valeria mentioned.

Elsa stood in position and tried it, "Divinuum presidium... Divinuum presidium..." She tried it several times but it did not work.

"Do it this way... Instead of only focusing all your energy on your hands, distribute it to your feet, legs, arms, and head. That way it will create a barrier all over your body. Before you cast the spell, gather all of your energy toward the center of your body, and when you finally cast it you have to push it all together in a burst."

Elsa nodded and tried it several times, unfortunately, she failed several times as well. The practice itself tires her so much that she can no longer try again. But she didn’t want to give up and pushed herself.

"Dear, you have to rest, you cannot empty your mana. Remember what happened to you in the forest by the river? Do you want that to happen again?" Elsa shook her head and pouted at her grandma. "Good, now rest. You can try again tomorrow. Let’s check the patients first before we head back to the castle."

Elsa also took the bread from the kitchen and placed it in different locations around the kitchen and infirmary. She strictly instructed everyone to not throw it away once it grew a blue-green mold and they must call her right away. She also bought some back to the castle. She made a mental note to spend time tomorrow to talk to the healers and non-magic users who are volunteering in the infirmary to teach them modern medical techniques and everything that she could teach them.
