Chapter 406: Breaking My Heart

Elsa remained silent as they walked from the kindergarten to the parking lot. Chris noticed and wished they were still bonded so he could understand her feelings. He opened the passenger door of his car, and Elsa climbed in absentmindedly, lost in her thoughts.

"Where should we go next?" Chris asked after taking his seat behind the wheel.

Elsa snapped out of her reverie and asked, "Where have you been these last five years?"

Her question made his body stiffen, which she noticed, but she waited patiently for his response.

"I’ve been back home. I was ill until last year. Then, I spent a year overseas studying to prepare for managing the hospital. Why do you ask?" Chris replied.

"Sick? What kind of illness? Was it physical or mental? Were you in an accident five years ago? Or maybe seven? Did you experience any memory loss?" Elsa asked, bombarding Chris with questions.

"Whoa, doctor, are you trying to diagnose me now?" Chris replied, unsure how to answer her. He wasn’t certain if responding would reveal too much about himself that might send him to his death.

Realizing she had overwhelmed him, Elsa tried to regain control. "Never mind, it’s still early. Let’s go back home. I asked Roxanne to cook lunch before she leave for errands. Let’s have an early lunch since you didn’t get a chance to eat breakfast." She buckled up and stared out the window, wondering about the father of her children. ’Where are you? Why do I feel like you’re nearby? When are you going to show yourself to me?’ she thought.

Chris remained silent until they reached her house. They both went to the kitchen, where he helped Elsa set the table while she reheated what Roxanne cooked for lunch. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

"What’s bothering you?" Chris asked when Elsa remained quiet halfway through their lunch.

"I’ll tell you because it’s part of my medical record and something you have access to... Five years ago, I had a car accident while I was pregnant with the twins on the way to my father’s hometown. I lost my memory, but not all of it—just the two years prior.

The last thing I remember was hitting someone and injuring him, and I believe he is the father of my kids... No, I know in my heart he is, but my memory of his face is blurry. My father, Marina, and Jai said I ran away with him, and they hadn’t seen me for two years.

So when I came back, they had no idea who the father of my children was. Jai said that he must be a bad and abusive person, which is why I was driving alone with Rocco on the day of the accident. He also said that might be why I never introduced him to my dad and friends.

But deep down, I know none of that is true. My heart says he’s a good man, but part of me questions that too. If he really is a good man, then where is he? Why hasn’t he looked for me, or at least Rocco, in case he didn’t know I was pregnant that time?"

Elsa felt her heart grow heavy. She had talked about this for years, but today felt different. She felt a deep sadness and an intense longing for the man she couldn’t remember.

She craved his love and yearned for his kiss. She wanted to wrap her arms around him and never let go. But how could she when she didn’t even know who he was? These thoughts overwhelmed her, and tears started pooling in her eyes.

"Sorry... Please give me a moment. Continue eating," she uttered before running to her room as fast as she could, not wanting Chris to see her cry.

’I’m here my love. I am here... I don’t need to look for you because I am here in front of you,’ he said internally.

Chris felt even worse than she did. His heart ached with immense pain and sorrow. He could see her suffering, and despite her memory loss, she was still in pain.

The worst part was that she was not only hurting but also lost in her own reality.

He hesitated to run after her, fearing that seeing her in such pain might force him to reveal himself. He was torn, his mind telling him to stay put while his heart begged him to chase after her.

He stared in the direction Elsa had gone until he felt a tug on his pants. Looking down, he saw the little pup biting and pulling at his pants. He could hear his tiny voice growling as if he was urging him to stand.

"Yakobo... Are you my Yakobo?" His tears fell without warning as he picked up the tiny pup and placed him on his lap.

The wolf pup gazed directly into his eyes, and Chris did the same. When he lifted his hand to pet Yakobo’s head, he felt a surge of electric shock at his fingertips and heard a faint voice in his head.

’Go and run after her, you dick! Don’t just sit here like a pussy! What are you waiting for? Run!!!’

His eyes widened, and he immediately put Yakobo on the ground. He ran to where Elsa had gone, hearing a high-pitched bark as he tried to figure out which room she had entered.

He saw Yakobo standing in front of one of the bedrooms. He knew that he was trying to tell him that Elsa was inside and so he opened it without knocking and immediately his eyes landed on her.

He saw Elsa sitting on the floor beside her bed, hugging her knees while crying her heart out. He quickly went to her and rubbed her arms, "I’m here, you can cry on my shoulder. You don’t have to carry it all by yourself. Share it with me. I will carry half of your burden if not all. Just don’t be in so much pain, I can’t take seeing you like this. You are breaking my heart big time."
