Chapter 95 โ€“ Where Is Mine

It didnโ€™t take Alexcent long to notice the enthusiasm and excitement flowing in his household. He wasnโ€™t immune to it, just like Pon, Gen and Lunia. ๏ฝ†๐“‡๐˜ฆ๐šŽ๐‘คe๐—ฏ๐‘›๐—ผัตe๐—น. c๐’๐˜ฎ

Gen and Pon, at the moment were waiting in the Dukeโ€™s office to provide a business report to the Duke. โ€œGen, how many did you get?โ€ asked Pon.

โ€œI got one today,โ€ Gen said, โ€œWhat about you?

โ€œI have already completed the first five and got myself a bonus,โ€ said Pon, proudly.

โ€œUgh, is it necessary to gloat?โ€ said Gen, โ€œI need to get a chance to meet the Duchess to even get the stamps. Itโ€™s unfair to me, I never see her as much as you.โ€

โ€œI am not gloating,โ€ Pon said, โ€œBut itโ€™s nice to receive such praise and compliment. I thought it was silly and I was too old for this. But it feels very strange and pleasant.โ€

โ€œUgh, stop bragging, will you?โ€ said Gen. He thought it was true though. When he first received the compliment board, he was indifferent to it. He though it was foolish to be treated like a child. But when he came across Amethyst in the hallway, she had praised him for his hard work and stamped his board. It had made him feel strangely happy. It had made him feel seen and appreciated. Now, it was all he could focus on. It also made him less grumpy these days.

Amidst their talk, the door to the office opened and Alexcent walked in. โ€œWhatโ€™s all the fuss?โ€ he asked. After what happened in the training field with Amethyst, he had been in a very bad mood.

โ€œAh, nothing, Your Excellency,โ€ said Pon, hurriedly.

โ€œSo, whatโ€™s in todayโ€™s report?โ€ asked Alexcent.

โ€œNothing special,โ€ replied Gen, โ€œAlmost the end of Congress, so everyone has been quiet.โ€

โ€œClearly not everyone,โ€ said Alexcent, โ€œWhatโ€™s all this fuss in the household? It annoying. The whispers are never-ending. What in the world has happened that had made everyone so excited?โ€

โ€œOh, thatโ€™sโ€ฆ,โ€ said Pon, and looked at Gen, uncertainly. โ€œThatโ€™s becauseโ€ฆ the Duchess has held an event to boost employee morale.โ€

โ€œWhat sort of event?โ€ asked Alexcent.

โ€œYes,โ€ continued Pon, โ€œItโ€™s a complimentary stamp system. If you do your job well, you receive a stamp. If you receive five stamps, you get a reward.โ€

โ€œHm,โ€ said Alexcent, โ€œa reward?โ€

โ€œThe first five stamps mean a 10 percent bonus,โ€ said Pon, โ€œTen stamps mean a one-day paid vacation leave and so on.โ€

โ€œAh, so this is what the fuss is about,โ€ said Alexcent.

โ€œEverybody in the household is participating, Your Excellency,โ€ said Pon.

โ€œEveryone? Even you?โ€ asked Alexcent, surprised.

โ€œYes,โ€ said Pon, โ€œMe, Gen, Lunia, everyone.โ€

Gen gaped, shocked from having his name mentioned in something so petty of a game.

โ€œEven Gen, huh?โ€ asked Alexcent, eyebrows raised.

Gen broke into a cold sweat hearing his name uttered. โ€œYour Excellency, I only received one stamp so far!โ€ he said, hurriedly, โ€œPon had already received a bonus and he is waiting for one more stamp to be off on a vacation.โ€

โ€œMr. Gen!โ€ exclaimed Pon, wide eyed.

โ€œGive it to me,โ€ said Alexcent, frowning.

โ€œSorry?โ€ stammered Pon.

โ€œWhy?โ€ asked Gen, at the same time.

They both looked at each other nervously. They had no intention of losing their cards, they still had many more stamps to receive!

โ€œGive me that complimentary card or whatever you call it,โ€ said Alexcent.

โ€œNo!โ€ exclaimed Pon. Gen gaped at Ponโ€™s boldness.

โ€œWhy not?โ€ asked Alexcent.

โ€œBecause I need to receive just one more for a vacation,โ€ said Pon, miserably.

โ€œSo, I canโ€™t take yours and use it?โ€ asked Alexcent.

Pon realized, with some surprise, that the Duke wanted one for his own, to earn the stickers. โ€œIt does not work that way,โ€ he said, as he reluctantly took out his compliment board from his pocket and held it out to Alexcent.

โ€œItโ€™s specifically designed, and you put your name on it,โ€ said Pon. He seemed to have taken very good care of the card as it was still new and shiny after being stamped nine times. The card was filled with โ€˜you did a great jobโ€™ stamps.

โ€œOh,โ€ murmured Alexcent, โ€œWhereโ€™s mineโ€ฆโ€

Pon let out a sigh of relief as he was dismissed from the office. Fortunately, the Duke wasnโ€™t very inclined on taking away his card, so he had it back. He felt bad for Gen who was still stuck in the office with the Duke. Well, there was nothing he could do about it. And Gen had betrayed him inside. Let him suffer a little, thought Pon with glee.

It was a very strange day. Leyrian stopped Amethyst before she left the field after sword practice.

โ€œExcuse me, Madam,โ€ he called.

โ€œYes?โ€ responded Amethyst.

โ€œUhโ€ฆ I just wanted to sayโ€ฆ the Duke,โ€ stammered Leyrian, โ€œYou did very well today, I just wanted to say that.โ€

โ€œThank you so much, Sir Leyrian,โ€ said Amethyst, gratefully, โ€œYou are a good teacher.โ€

As Amethyst entered the household, she came across Gen in the hallway. โ€œGen!โ€ she called.

โ€œHello, Madam,โ€ said Gen, cheerfully, โ€œHavenโ€™t seen you in a long while.โ€

โ€œNice to meet you too, Gen,โ€ she said, โ€œYou look tired. Seems you have been having it tough.โ€

โ€œDo I look that bad already?โ€ laughed Gen.

โ€œTake it easy, Gen!โ€ she said, โ€œYou need to take care of your health.โ€

โ€œYes, Madam,โ€ he said, โ€œThank you. I will. Butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYes?โ€ said Amethyst, urging Gen.

โ€œThe thing is, um,โ€ said Gen, โ€œNever mind. If you will excuse meโ€ฆ.โ€ Gen walked away.

Amethyst was confused. Clearly, Gen had something to say but thought better of it. Leyrian had been the same as well. I wonder what is wrong, she thought as she made her way back to her bedroom. Back in her bedroom, Lunia greeted her.

โ€œMadam,โ€ she said, โ€œHow was training today?โ€

โ€œAh, Lunia,โ€ she said, โ€œThank you for asking. It was the same old. Posture correction again.โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ said Lunia.

โ€œBut why have you been waiting for me,โ€ she asked, โ€œIs something the matter?โ€

โ€œWellโ€ฆ,โ€ trailed off Lunia.

โ€œEveryone is being weird today,โ€ she said, โ€œSo many people have approached me as though they have something to say, and then they falter and change the topic of conversation.โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ said Lunia, hesitantly, โ€œEveryone?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ she said, โ€œI can sense that they have a request, but they canโ€™t say it. I didnโ€™t press them thinking it might be a difficult request that they are having a hard time asking for.โ€

Lunia realized that she wasnโ€™t the only one afraid of the wrath of the Duke, many, apparently, were dealing with the same thing and trying to convey it to the Duchess. There was a knock on the bedroom door.
