The Rogue Alpha's Second Chance-Chapter 39: Sweetheart
Chapter 39: Sweetheart
Uncle?
Violet blinked, registering that.
Could he be a relative of Sylas?
Both of them had the same eyes yet they were so distinctly apart. While Sylas’s steely-blue depths were gentle— resembling a calm ocean surface under the moonlight— the other man’s ones reminded her of a ferocious storm, waiting to engulf and destroy everything.
Violet quivered.
It was too frightening.
As the man scrutinized her, Violet did not dare to breathe. She counted in her head nervously, waiting for him to remove his gaze from her.
Sylas came to her rescue by standing in front of her. The smile on his face was as welcoming as ever before saying, "She is a little girl. You don’t need to bother with her, Uncle."
Then, looking at Violet, he voiced out, "Go to the house."
Violet nodded instantly, feeling saved.
She was about to run away as though she was being chased by a murderous beast when she halted in her steps and looked back. Then, gulping, she greeted, "Good afternoon, Mister. Uhm, uh, I hope you have a great day."
After that, she hurried away as if her pants were on fire, slamming the door to the house once she entered.
"She is quite unremarkable," pointed out Caspian, "for someone who caught you interest."
Sylas pretended to look oblivious. "What do you mean? Lucas just happened to save her and insisted I allow her to stay here."
Caspian’s eyes narrowed, not being appreciative of the lies that smoothly flowed out of Sylas’s tongue. "Cut the crap. You never had the heart to rescue others, that too resisting the council over a woman. What are you thinking?"
"Uncle, you can’t be here because of these trivial matters, right?" Sylas chose to not respond.
Caspian’s eyes darkened. "On an inspection. Trouble has been brewing up around here."
That did not sound pleasant to here. The reason why Sylas initially chose this place was due to the peace here. All the surrounding packs co-existed without any major trouble here, quite accommodating and accepting of each other’s presence.
"Why?" Sylas asked. For the Caspian to come over here, that meant the issue could not be negligible. There was a clear hint of irritation in Sylas’s voice.
"That is what I have to figure out as well. Why?"
On the other hand, when Violet entered the house, she went over and sat beside Lucas on the couch. She patted on her chest.
Lucas paused from the game he was playing and noticed her tensed state. "What has you so frightened?"
"There is a man outside, chatting with the Alpha. He is big and scary. Just looking at him makes me tremble," Violet expressed, "why am I so cowardly? I heard the Alpha call him uncle."
Lucas furrowed his brows. "Alpha Caspian is here?"
Violet curiously stared at him, waiting for him to provide her with an introduction.
And Lucas generously did so.
"As you have heard, he is our Alpha’s uncle, the current Alpha to Crimson Moon pack. He is a savage who carved his way to power through a graveyard of thousands. A very ruthless and bloodthirsty man who knows no logic and relies on plundering to get what he wants.
And if you manage to offend him, consider yourself gone. The scariest part is you don’t even know how you offended him. Very rarely does anyone dare to stare at him straight in the eyes," Lucas described.
Violet shuddered.
Noticing Violet’s unease, a mischievous glint crossed through Lucas’s eyes. He leaned closer to the woman and said, "Once someone dared to drop a fork in his presence. The next instant, he stabbed the fork in his throat and ripped out all the nerves and bones from within. And then—"
Before Lucas could carry on, Violet placed her palm on his mouth to prevent him from speaking. She wouldn’t be able to stomach her dinner if they carried on.
Violet then lowered her hand and asked, "How is Crimson Moon pack?"
The most she had heard about the Crimson Moon pack was from the rumors. The land was surrounded in bitter cold weather all year around, and there stayed the most bloodthirsty werewolves in existence.
"It’s not any better than the rumors you have heard, Princess. It is a frightening place. If someone like you was sent there, you will be devoured, left with only bones in less than a day.
Only the strongest survive there. You need to be heartless and stay one step ahead to survive there. There is no such thing as family or love. You’re on your own from the day you’re born, and this gets worse when you’re in the position of power," Lucas informed.
Violet found it hard to relate such a pack to Lucas, Lydia, and Sylas. All of them treated her with warmth and welcome that made her feel as though they might have come from a place of love.
Lucas understood what Violet thought.
"Don’t look at us right now and judge us. All of us, especially the Alpha, we used to be worse. We have more blood in our hand than you can imagine. Maybe you wouldn’t want to associate with us if you knew how we truly are." A soft smile played on his face.
Violet shook her head immediately.
"That won’t be the case. You guys were by my side when no one else was, supporting me along. No matter how you were, I accept it. I am glad all of you are safe and sound now. That’s what matters," Violet vocalized.
Lucas patted on her head. "You are indeed such a sweetheart, knowing how to please me. I will bake you your favorite chocolate chip cookies as a treat tonight, alright?"
Violet extended her hand and hugged Lucas.
"You are the one who treats me the best, Lucas." A wide grin was present on her face.
Lucas pinched on her nose.
"Then, Lucas, can you tell me more about your past? I am curious," Violet said carefully.
"What do you want to know?"
"Just anything," Violet stated, "just anything you would want me to know."
Creases formed between both of Lucas’s brows as if contemplating on something. Then, his eyes glimmered when he asked, "Do you want to know how Alpha was in the past?"
That caught her interest, and Violet sat up straight on the couch. Her round hazel eyes sparkled with curiosity.
Lucas was excited to gossip as well.
"Don’t look at how fussy the Alpha is right now. He used to be worse as a child. Once there was a child who mistakenly swung mud at him and got Alpha’s favorite shirt dirty. Guess what the Alpha did?"
Violet arched up her brows.
"Alpha brought out all of that child’s clothes and set them on fire in front of the entire pack. Although the Alpha is a sly fox now, as a child, he used to be easily irritable and couldn’t control his temper.
Any one who used to offend him, he used to burn their things or drown them in the lake. The only one who could ease his temper was the Luna. It was as though she got him in the palm of her hand.
Back then, I couldn’t tolerate his arrogance. He used to hold his head high and watch everyone in disdain, strutting around like a peacock. One time, I..."
As Lucas carried on, Violet listened with unwavering attention, discovering a side of Sylas she couldn’t relate with the current him.
"Is this fun?" a deep masculine voice asked.
Caught in the moment, with a soft smile playing on her lips, Violet nodded.
But then, Lucas’s widened eyes fell into her notice before he lowered them and looked the other way.
The startled Violet was about to fall backwards when Sylas’s hand grasping on her shoulder fixated her to her position. Her hazel eyes was covered in guilt as she looked the Alpha.
"Alpha, have you finished talking with your Uncle?" Violet asked, in an attempt to change the topic.
Sylas pressed down on her head and voiced out, "Daring to gossip about me, you’ve grown bold, haven’t you? Only a couple days ago, you couldn’t look at me properly in the eyes."
Violet blinked her hazel eyes innocently. "Alpha, I didn’t gossip about you. I just listened to what Lucas had to say."
"Oh?" Sylas’s smiling eyes fell on Lucas. He felt a chill travel down his back.
Before he could make an excuse for himself, Sylas ordered, "Lucas, you can busy yourself weeding the lawn."
"But Alpha—"
"Also, I think you should keep watch at night for the week— outside."
"Alpha, I—"
"And I don’t believe you need anymore allowance for the month. You spent a lot."
Lucas sighed. "Yes, Alpha."
’Petty bastard.’
Violet stared down at her fingers while playing with the hem of her dress as if this had nothing to do with her.
