THE RISE OF AN OMEGA-Chapter 77: Outnumbered
Chapter 76:outnumbered
Ryker’s POV
We finally made it back to the surface.
Surprisingly, everything was quiet—eerily so. Not a single sign of a creature lurking around. I let out a deep breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding. I’d been sure that the creatures responsible for our fall into the cave would still be out there, waiting to ambush us the moment we resurfaced. But the coast was clear. It seemed we’d gotten lucky. No one was waiting for us.
I exhaled again, the tension in my shoulders easing slightly. Still, everyone remained on high alert. They shifted into defensive stances, eyes scanning the terrain for even the slightest movement. Just in case something decided to come crawling out from behind the trees or beneath the rocks.
But there was nothing.
Or so we thought.
That’s when I noticed Kira. She had taken a different stance—still, focused. Her eyes sharpened as if she had seen or heard something the rest of us hadn’t.
I wasn’t surprised. Being the Moonkeeper, her power gave her an edge none of us could match. She could sense things long before they were even a blip on our radar—or worse, things we might never detect at all.
I stood back and watched our makeshift family, scattered across the rocky surface. Kira turned to us and asked if we sensed what she sensed. I strained my ears. I thought I heard something faint, something distant—but no one else seemed to register anything.
Then she went still, her gaze distant.
She was mind-linking. Communicating with whatever it was she had sensed. The rest of us kept watch, eyes darting across every nook and cranny of the surface, just waiting for an ambush we couldn’t afford.
I moved closer to her, hoping to get her attention, but she remained locked in her trance-like state. Engrossed in her mental exchange. Whatever—or whoever—she was talking to, it had all of her focus.
My heartbeat quickened.
Something didn’t feel right.
What kind of creature had her so engrossed that she couldn’t even spare me a few seconds?
Dread began to creep in. Could it be the dark entity? Was it back?
My mind spiralled, running through the possibilities. Could it be another nightmare creature? The same ones that had emerged from the dug holes when we first arrived here? Or maybe it was something worse—like the creatures with the moonstone embedded in their bodies.
A thought struck me.
Elder Antony had never told us that the moonstone could be found inside one of those creatures. Maybe he hadn’t known. Or maybe... maybe that wasn’t even the real moonstone. Just a lookalike. A decoy.
And if that was true, then what else didn’t we know?
That couldn’t be the Moonstone... No. The Moon Goddess wouldn’t have asked us to retrieve it if it belonged to someone else, right?
"Then who could she be talking to?"
Isabella’s voice suddenly echoed through my ears, yanking me back to reality.
"Um, I’m sorry, Isabella. What did you just say?"
"Oh, come on," she said, folding her arms. "Don’t tell me a creature got mind-linked with you too, and now you’re both plotting how to get rid of us?"
I chuckled. "No, Isabella. Nothing like that’s going to happen. Besides, I wasn’t talking to any shadow creature."
"There was a moment you looked lost," she said, watching me carefully.
I took a few steps away from where Kira stood, keeping her in my peripheral vision. "I was just thinking... wondering what kind of creature had gotten a hold of Kira this time."
Isabella rolled her eyes. "Oh, come on. Haven’t you learned anything from our journey so far?"
I looked at her, puzzled. "What do you mean?"
"You still don’t get it?" she said, her voice softening. "Kira can take care of herself. Besides, it’s just a mind-linked conversation. It’s not like the creature could kill her just by talking."
I drew in a deep breath. She was right—but that didn’t stop the unease crawling beneath my skin.
"I understand you perfectly well, Isabella," I said, "but the truth is... I can’t stop worrying about her."
"Because you love her?"
"Keep your voice down," I hissed, shooting a glance back at the others.
"Why?" she teased. "This isn’t the time to talk about things like that?"
I looked away. "Are you sure that’s the reason—or are you just afraid of the others finding out?"
"There’s no need to hide it from us." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
I had thought Isabella and I had walked far enough from the rest of the group, but clearly, I was wrong. I’d been careless—forgotten that we were wolves, and wolves didn’t need to be standing beside you to hear what you were saying.
But strangely, it felt... good that they knew.
I had been worried—worried that if I admitted how I felt, it would cause friction in the pack. That some might not approve. That it could start something ugly—quiet resentments that could grow into feuds, tearing the unity of our group apart.
Not like their opinions mattered, I reminded myself. But still... I didn’t want division. Not now. Not ever.
"We’ve known since the first day we saw her," someone said behind me.
My eyes widened. My jaw practically hit the ground.
Before I could respond, a heavy tension began to creep into the air.
Something had arrived.
The pressure was palpable like the sky itself had inhaled and refused to exhale.
I turned instinctively, eyes seeking Kira. My chest tightened.
Was she okay?
Was this... whatever had arrived... the same thing she’d been talking to all this while?
Suddenly, shadow armies began to rise from the ground; it was then we remembered that this was the forest of the undead and the forsaken. The one elder Anthony had warned us about.
"I guess our moonkeeper must have made the big guy angry", Isabella chuckled.
"How can you be smiling in a time like this?"
"Come on Clara, Where’s the fun in frowning all the time."
"There’s too many of them!" Marcel announced.
"We can’t fight them all, we are outnumbered." Emilia panicked.
"Outnumbered or not, it’s better to fight and die than to surrender to the shadow army,", Marvel said firmly.
Kiŕa turned to look at all the shadow armies that were up already. The most surprising part of it all was that they weren’t done; more were still rising.
I watched her clenched my fist and gritted her teeth.
I heard the creature’s laughter in my head. "I am sure you understand now that you can’t win this fight. And you know what the good thing about this? When you die here, you will rise as by shadow army and then you will belong to me for eternity."
"You wish" she snapped.
The shadow armies stood as if waiting for something. I wasn’t sure what it was, but being an alpha and a leader myself, I suspected that they could be waiting for their master commands just as my paçk members wouldn’t move until I gave the command, and lo and behold, I was right. They had been waiting for the command from their master. They began to charge ahead the moment we heard him give them their command.
We all stood there wondering what we were going to do. Ì wanted to ask Kira, but I hesitated.
As the shadow forces rushed toward us, time appeared to drag on. The others assumed defensive stances, yet their expressions revealed what we all understood—we were greatly outnumbered. These foes were not typical; they were the undead from Raventhorne, and they sought something, from the way their master gaze was fixed on Kira and knowing it was her they wanted
"Got any thoughts, Kira?" My voice remained calm despite it all.
Kira shut her eyes, sensing deeply within her being once again. Having expended so much energy to break through the cave, she was uncertain about how much she had remaining. However, there was no other way for her and us. There was no way we could escape because we were surrounded, and we couldn’t battle them all.
"Remain near me," she instructed,
As the initial wave of shadow warriors arrived, she released her strength—a dazzling orb of moonlight that spread outward, turning the front lines to ash. However, there was an overwhelming number, and the light was already fading.
"She can’t handle them all by herself!" Clara yelled
As I wàtched her carefully her knees gave way as the next wave hit our shield. Sweat ran down her face as she fought to hold the shield. Amidst the faint light, we saw the being gradually emerging from the darkness—towering, ancient, with eyes that shone like fading stars.
"Your strength will shortly belong to me," it whispered, but this time it was audible to all of us.
The expression on Kira’s face made me know that that was what they had been discussing.
After blasting off so many shadow armies, the still seemed to be multipying
