Chapter 32: Legacy of Gold

Asher’s POV

Since Mira came back, I had been purposely waiting and doing nothing for some time; my warriors were strong, so I didn’t need to drill them for the impending battle.

No, don’t misunderstand. I did drill them, but it wasn’t like the way Ryker might be drilling his people. My greatest weapon now was my sparkling golden-eyed wolves, strength equivalent to that of an alpha.

*****

The man behind the golden-eyed wolves was my late father. Before he died, he had wanted to make something extraordinary; I remember when I was little, my father would tell me that he needed a challenge and that the beta wolves in the pack were not strong enough to challenge him.

He would even say the wolves he had battled with weren’t strong enough, so he went ahead to do his research; he had even employed the expertise of a scholar who knew about herbs and stuff so he could create something, a potion like I like to call it.

After so many failed attempts, my dad was almost giving up; in fact, his failures were slowly killing him. He barely spent time with me or my mother anymore.

Until one very day, his best friend and beta offered himself as a test subject. My dad was sceptical because every beta wolf he tried had died. Even the beta wolves he had captured from other packs during his battle all died.

But his friend insisted that they experimented on him; little me stood by the door listening to their argument.

"I can’t do this to you, Bernard."

"I am offering myself willingly, Belroose. There’s nothing to feel bad about."

"You are my beta... my beta Bernard, the strongest beta wolf I have ever met; you certainly don’t need this."

"Who knows maybe you need the strongest of beta wolves for the experiment to be successful."

My dad turned, looking away, arms folded. "No, Bernard, I am not doing this; I won’t be the one to end your life."

"We can’t be so sure it won’t work until we..."

"We can’t be so sure you will come out of it alive, Bernard", Dad interrupted, his voice louder.

Bernard took a deep breath, moved closer to my father, placed his hand on his shoulder and said "All will be fine Belroose, you don’t have to worry yourself about anything"

At that moment, I saw the true bond that existed between my father and Bernard, a bond that didn’t just exist because of the Alpha-beta relationship they had but a bond of true friendship.

"Let him do it, Father", I butted in.

They both turned in my direction and smiled.

"My little champ, what are you doing here?" Bernard teased

"I am not little anymore" I scoffed, folding my hands

"Uh, how old are you again" Dad asked, teasing me

"Come on Dad, I am fifteen" I replied

Dad looked at Bernard, and they both laughed; I hated the way they made me feel like I was a little boy.

Dad placed his hands on my head, giving me a gentle pat. "I am going to try it on, Bernard. Are you going to like to watch as it goes?"

My eyes lit up with excitement, without hesitation I agreed immediately but Bernard didn’t seem to like the idea but who was he to say no when my father had spoken, yes my father loved him so much but he couldn’t dare give my father an instruction or say no to him whenever my father said yes.

He understood my father so much, and the best thing he did was to give advice, which was left to my dad to accept or not. I think this mutual understanding they had of each other made it easier for both of them to have a good Alpha-Beta relationship.

"Come, boy, let’s move."

I followed Dad to the room where he always experimented; it was a very large room filled with equipment and machinery I never thought existed, but Dad had gone out of his way to travel far and wide just so he could get these things.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t going to see any of them in action because what he needed to do was just inject the potion into Bernard’s bloodstream and lay him on a bed, tied tightly.

"Wait here, boy", Dad instructed.

I washed him go into a particular room and brought out something that looked like a round glass with a flat bottom in it was a yellowish liquid, no it was gold.

He placed it on one of the tables and went over to Bernard, who was already on the bed, trying to chain himself to the bed.

"Come here son, and help me with that" Dad called

I immediately rushed over to where he was, tightening the chain from my end. Dad came to inspect it, and he was impressed by how I had handled it well.

He gave me an approving smile; my heart leapt for joy.

He went back to where he dropped the bottle bringing it closer to the bed. He took out a syringe and withdrew some quantity into the syringe.

"This is it..." he said, pushing the end of the syringe in a little, making the content spill out a little.

Dad injected the content into Bernard’s bloodstream. For the first five minutes, nothing happened; around six minutes, he began to shake and shiver on the bed. I started slowly until it became so aggressive that his eye colour kept changing between red, yellow, gold and blue.

It continued like that for the next thirty minutes until he finally calmed down.

"His he dead?" I asked

"I hope not son," Dad replied

Dad went closer, raising his eyebrows. I also went closer so I could take a better look at him.

His eyes were pale white. "He’s dead, Dad" I exclaimed.

Dad almost fell to the ground as it dawned on him he had failed again, and he had lost not just any beta but his beta and his friend.

"I am sorry dad"

"It’s fine dear, it really is" Dad was about to smash the content of the round bottom flask, but he hesitated; I wasn’t sure why he did that, though, not like it was my business. The test didn’t work, so there was nothing I could use it for.

Or maybe he hoped that I would continue to find ways to make it work.

As we turned to leave, we began to hear a low grunt sound; I and my dad stared at each other for a moment, and then the next thing we heard was a growl, and we turned to look behind us to see his best friend alive, but something had changed his eyes were now glowing gold.

My dad was the happiest man on earth; he went closer to him, asking him some questions just so he could be sure that it was the person he knew and his beta answered every question correctly.

My dad got what he wanted: his test worked, and his best friend was still alive.

I was happy, too, at least I knew my dad was going to look at me now, or so I thought.

He began to train with Bernard every single day, he made me watch them spar. I enjoyed it, no doubt, but Also I wished I was the one there with him.

After my father passed on, his beta also passed on I was left with the potion.

Before my father died, he had told me how he made it: An alpha’s blood and some rare herbs mixed.

I continued my father’s work in secret as I knew people wouldn’t like the idea of what they didn’t seem to understand until recently. I had to bring them out just so my pack members could fear me and know that I was stronger than their so-called moonkeeper.

I was able to create about three golden eyes werewolves with my blood and the herbal mix.

"Tell all our warriors to gather in the training ground now" I ordered.

My wolf guard took to his heels coming back a few minutes later with other wolves by his side.

"We are going to war soon, and I need everyone to be at their best, now pick a partner."

Everyone picked their sparing partners except for the golden-eyed wolves, who I had been training with secretly.

"We must get Kira back even if it means killing everyone that stands in our way."

"What if she doesn’t want to go with you? What will you do?" Aria’s voice came like a whisper from behind.

I hesitated a bit "Then we kill her too" I Replied

Aria chuckled "That’s good, I am also glad you followed in your father’s footsteps Asher,"

I knew she was talking about the golden eye wolves, but I didn’t say anything; I just ignored it.

I watched them as they spared fiercely; they were good, but something bothered me.

Ryker had fought with Mira, Mira knew all our techniques, and Kira also fought with her. They both knew our technique now, and I knew they were probably practising counterattacks. I needed to think of a new strategy, a new technique, and I needed to do this fast.

While I watched them spar, I was glad for one thing, they didn’t know the amount of special wolves I had. But above all, my greatest fear was Kira, the moonkeeper.

I couldn’t help but wonder if we would be able to defeat Ryker’s pack with her standing with them.

What’s going to be her next step?

What could they be planning?
