Chapter 83: The healed boy - III

Never had I ever thought of seeing the boy I saved, the one who could barely even open his eyes let alone move, would stand in front of me like a normal, healthy boy from both mind and body.

"What did you just say?" I heard Merilyn ask him as I watched.

He did not even glance at her rather just kept staring at me. "I said, for the debt that I owe you which is of my life, I would like to serve you for the rest of me life."

Perhaps the fever went to his brain. "I do not understand your thinking here." I said with disbelief and annoyance visible in my voice. "Even though you have already been in a life of slavery, the very one I saved you from; you would again become someone’s slave? Willingly too?"

He nodded with a slight smile. "My parents had sold me to a trader. I do not know why, I was never told why except that they did not want me and now I have to face the Consequences of it."

"Consequences of being born?" I scoffed at what was told to the boy. This was not good at all. This was simply barbaric. How could anyone say that to a child or even sell him? "Could they not give you to an orphanage instead?" I heard myself think loud lout to which the boy laughed.

"Orphans," he laughed at the word, "No one cares about children whose parents did not care about them. Even if they did give me to an orphanage they would have ended up selling me after a certain age for money.’ He shrugged at the reality. "It happens everywhere. Many children were from orphanages." 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

Oh the horrors, I closed my eyes the thought. How could they?

"No." I sighed and answered him with a straight face, without any hint of smile letting him know that I was not joking and I had answered him in complete seriousness. I was not asking slave, that was worse than ever sin I had ever committed which were not many. "I would have liked you to go back parents but since they were the ones to sell you, perhaps I can have a job given to you instead. What would you like?"

"I would like to serve you." He had the cheek to smile and reply.

This was not going to go anywhere which is why I started walking to the door.

’Where and you going?" he called in a suddenly tensed voice. "Please, are you leaving me here?" he called out in desperation and I almost stopped. What was going on?

"Wait," why would he say that, "I am not leaving you alone. I am leaving you with the healer. Where is she?" he had fallen silent on that. "I asked you something, where is the healer? It is the morning and healers do not leave unless it is the afternoon. So?"

The cheeky expressions on his face were gone and he almost looked like an adult, someone aged around me who I did not understand as he was weak and younger to me when I had first seen him.

"She is not here. I do not know what happened but she went out in a hurry, long ago, before dawn one could day. I was not awake but I had heard the sounds. Someone must have called her." He offered as his explanations and I raised an eyebrow at that.

"Well then she would return. So I am leaving you with her." I opened the door after keeping a pouch filled with coins on the able and walked towards the carriage as the boy followed me.

My face twisted into an ugly expression and I covered it. The smell was horrifying. What was rotting away! "What is that?" I asked the man who was my escort and he answered in a suffocated voice. He seemed o be holding his breath in as well.

"Must be a dead animal buried somewhere near. It has started to rot and since it not wrapped and buried deep, we can smell the rot." He glanced at the boy behind me, "Is he bothering you, .y .lady?"

He was but I did not eat him to get a beating, so I shook my head. "No, he is not. Let us go back now."

"No you cannot leave like his. I have to serve you-" as soon as the boy stepped forward, the messenger and the other guards tackled him to the ground immediately. The boy groaned out and looked at me with moist eyes. He lips were stretched out as putting like a child and I looked away from him to Merilyn

Only to be taken aback from hat I saw.

"What are you doing?" I hissed at in ager. "What is with the face?"

She was making similar expressions to the boy which only managed to make her more ridiculous. "Cease that!"

"But the boy?" she whispered as her eyes darted towards the poor boy. "What about him?"

"I have had him treated enough for him to be able to walk and talk like a normal boy. He cannot go back to his parents so he can now choose a direction towards earning money." I answered her. "The rest is not my concern. It never was." my only concern had been to talk about his healing to the healer but she was not here.

"But, you can pay him too. Slaves are not paid, you cannot do that and when he is ready to leave, we will let him go for a new life."

"Perhaps that would be right." The messenger spoke up and came to us. The boy was standing afar with the other gourds, looking at me with an expression of longing.

"What are you talking about?" I asked the man.

He looked at the boy. "I was there when you saved him. He was on the brink of death perhaps would have been if you would not have spoken up. It is understandable that he owes his life to you to now and wants to serve you. I think you should do it. After all, he is just being grateful."

I looked at boy and sighed. Perhaps I could pay him and he won’t be a slave.
