The Princess's Dangerous Vampire Mate-Chapter 66: Breakfast with the Prince - I
I watched the sunrise from the window of my room in the prince’s chambers and could not help but compare it to the sunset I was used to seeing from my balcony. That place was my home and always will be.
The sun was the same. It was the one I had seen a thousand times before, but not how I was used to.
"Princess, Good morning," Merilyn greeted as she came into the room and I merely nodded to her telling her that I was listening.
"Give me a few minutes and I will go and get the bath ready." She left after that, I heard her footsteps as she walked away and out of the room.
I continued to stare at the sun. It meant that a new day had begun but for me, it now meant that one more day had passed and I could not help Tristan.
I sighed and moved to bathe when Merilyn came in again. This time I did not waste any time. Instead, I took one quickly and moved out to the dining hall where I was supposed to have dinner with the prince.
"Good morning," he wished with a smile on his face as he was already present at the table and I took a seat.
"Good morning, Prince Lysar." I wished and watched as his head tilted. He was thinking again.
"You do not look as happy as you usually do." He concluded by making me scoff. Forgive me, my governess.
"One cannot always be happy, especially when they do not have a reason to do so."
"Because of Tristan?" He spoke up immediately, making a heat rush to my checks but I refrained from giving him that satisfaction. After tonight he would know what was the extent that I could go to.
"No," I sighed and picked up a small berry. "Mainly because we have not been able to find any evidence that the creatures of the night exist or not."
He shook his head pointedly. "The very night you came here along with my younger brother, you heard the howls of the wolves."
What did that mean? "Yes, but we have not seen any evidence regarding that. First of all, we know that it could be a normal dog howling in the middle of the night!"
He sighed, appearing to be tired of the conversation. "We have been trying to gather evidence but the moment we reach there all of our soldiers are dead which makes us conclude that it was either the work of an animal or perhaps an entity that we do not know of."
"A demon?" Well, that certainly changed a lot of facts and theories.
He raised his palms slightly as the servants entered and served as food. We stayed quiet as they continued to serve the food and the moment the door was closed The Prince looked at me again, ready to talk.
"I have the evidence for proof relating to the fact that it could be the creatures of the night which we had initially presumed. Every time it is that no soldier can fight off any of them given that it might be one or ten, it only makes us wonder if it is the work of a demon."
I looked down at my plate, thinking. We could not fight a demon. Demons do not mean to fight with normal people but people of those belonging to the higher practices of the church.
If it was a demon threatening the sanity and safety of people then the priests should be called which only made me wonder how was a demon forcing the life out of so many God-loving people?
There must have been someone who must be able to fight these off but were they even demons to begin with or it was just the creatures of the night who were trying to find out away?
"Demons cannot be killed," I added softly. "Demons, I believe, are much more dangerous than the creatures of the night and we cannot fight them at all."
The prince nodded, staring at me. "I know." He sipped some water. "Which is why I and my father were thinking about having the holy blessing of the lands."
My eyebrows shot up. "What?" I had never heard of it before.
"Holy blessing is like a blessing performed on a person but instead of the person is performed on the land." He explained. "We have been thinking about it for a long time but now that the speculations of the men’s haunting the land have aired up we think that this is the right time to have it done."
I did not know about that. "I do not have a good feeling about this." Not only me, no one but I have a good feeling about this false and temporary solution for every country with God-fearing people.
It was forbidden to talk about demons knowing that they could hear you or even be summoned by a ritual that you were not aware of. That made me think of something.
"What if it is a demon that has been killing everyone by possessing a villager?" I presented and he immediately looked up at me.
"All I know, it could be both of our speculations coming together. A demon turning a person into a. . . . Creature of the night because they are only seen at night."
He bit his lip and leaned back into the chair. "No one has seen them in the light." He murmured to himself, "Which could mean that this is possible." He closed his eyes and covered them with his hand.
He was stressed out, the tensions were getting to him and it was obvious for anyone to see.
I would have been too if it was happening in my country which was why I was here. Their problem was shifting into mine and would gradually increase as people were coming in more numbers than before.
We both were lost in our thoughts only to be brought out by a knock. The prince barked out an order and a soldier arrived, moving immediately to the prince and whispering something in his ear making his eyes fly to mine.
As I watch the expressions on his face change I realize that whatever the soldier has to convey was not good.
