Chapter 289: The wooden cottage - II

The chirping of the birds woke me up and I will rise, in my heart sleepy state, how long it had been for me to rise with the birds.

I opened my eyes and entertain directly at the sunlight, I saw the outline of a man—

Gasping, I set up straight and stared at the window with wide eyes where I now saw no one.

What was that? Did I hallucinate?

"Princess?" Dorothy came to stand by my bed and I noticed that she was fully dressed and ready, "did you see a bad dream?"

I was not sure what I saw which is why I just shook my head. "You woke up so soon?"

She chuckled shyly. "I woke up at the time I always wake up. The servants wake up at the crack of dawn and my sleep breaks on that time now."

"Ah," I nodded before getting up. Coming to the realization that this room did not have an attached bathing room or a restroom I turned to Dorothy, "where do I..?"

"The bathroom for the woman is beside, diagonal to the house, and the toilet is right beside it. You have to take a bucket of water anywhere you go."

I nodded, understanding the gist of it.

"Come," she stretched her hand towards me, "I will help you until you get a hang of it, Genevive."

I passed her a smile, grateful for the help before going over to my bundle and grabbing address. I have packed the simpler ones, the ones that would fit in a small bundle.

Dorothy, as she said, helped me as much as she got. She showed me where the hand pump was which I had never used in my life, how to use the bucket and carry it to the bathroom and then she showed me what sport to take with me in the toilet.

It must’ve taken me almost double the time it would take for me to get ready daily. The tasks that I have to do today were confusing and to a certain degree, very heavy to conduct.

By the time I was done, the sun was up in the sky.

Walking inside the house, I was immediately greeted by Mrs Walter sitting with her husband drinking tea and they invited me over the moment they noticed I was in the room.

"I must tell you, Genevive," Mrs Walter gushed as she took my hand and hers, "you looked like your mother the most out of your three sisters and still do."

"Thank you," I smiled, " it has been a long time since she has been gone."

"Yes," she whispered sullenly, "I miss her." She then smiled and chuckled sadly. "Do you know many queens never allow their ladies-in-waiting to get married. A little affair, here and there was allowed, but marriage was a rare thought for all of us. I never thought she would allow me to get married to your uncle, especially when he was such an important man."

"But she did." I said, smiling a little.

"She did," Mrs Walter repeated. "she was the Queen who ruled a kingdom and I never expected her to give her blessings to us, yet, she did."

Lucky were those Kings and Queens that were remembered even in death, with smiles on their faces and heart one because they were now gone from the world.

One of them was always going to be my mother. She was remembered by almost everyone in the kingdom as a symbol of progress and prosperity. The boom in the economy that came under her rule and went away after she passed.

She sighed loudly, attracting my attention before she got up, "I shall rest."

I turned my head to Sir Walter in question. What just happened? For a moment, Mrs Walter looked alright but in the next, she changed.

"Well," he sighed, "she’s not well, Genevive. It is difficult to pinpoint what it is but she’s not keeping well."

I nodded.

"The healer for the prince is going to be here soon. I asked him to come at the crack of dawn. He will be the one to tell us... How fragile is the state of the prince, if it is too fragile then we would refrain from making a trip to his country." He shook his head, " The situation is delicate enough, we are transporting a prince across borders without the permission of any royal family. This could end disastrously if anything were to happen to him."

Or in other words, if he died then it was our necks.

"In case, I do not think that would happen but, just in case he is well enough to travel, do you have a way for us to cross the borders of three countries?" 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

My question certainly did something. The tensions that he had in his mind came to his face and the fatigue became more visible.

"I do not know how we are going to do that," he cleared his throat, "yet."

"Yet?"

He nodded. " I have done a lot of things for your mother when she was the Queen. I still have the connections but as you said, it depends on how the prince is fairing."

Gingerly taking a sip of his tea, he continued, "when the time comes, we can devise a plan that would be trustable enough for anyone to fall in."

Huh, I nodded.

I took a sip from the tea that had been served to me. From hot, it had now turned to lukewarm but it was perfect for me to drink. The ginger in it soothed my throat.

The silence was broken by three hard knocks on the door and so Walter gave me a look before getting up and walking towards it.

"It must be the healer." He muttered on his way.

With a sigh, I drank all of the tea at once and stood out. It was time to begin the first part of the journey home.
