Chapter 257: The king’s verdict - III

I waited anxiously along with the maid who appeared to be biting her nails.

No one seemed to be breathing with how silent the great courtroom had grown to be.

There were no whispers or even an intake of a breath for someone to create any kind of noise. Everyone was holding their breaths just like I had.

Tristan hummed loudly before he barked, "Bring them in!"

The doors opened at these words and three soldiers walked in. They were not alone, rather they were dragging two people behind them, by their feet.

Oh lord.

I leaned a little to see more clearly.

One was Olivia for sure and the other was someone I did not recognise.

The soldiers walked in the space from the entrance to the king and stopped hardly ten steps away from the king’s throne. The crowd of staff members had parted with wide eyes and clenched fists to see who had entered.

Their eyes moved and dropped to the two servants who were dropped on the floor.

"These two," Vaughn stepped in front of the king and the crowd, "have been the complete opposite of what they were hired to do. So, we have decided to relieve them of their duties."

His eyes and body moved towards Tristan and he bent his head, "My king."

I could not see where Tristan was looking at but the way his head was, I could tell that he was looking down at the two culprits.

"We will release them of their duties under us." Tristan nodded but did not raise or move his head. "However I do not like the fact that we are not extending the invitation to each and every servant. Quite unfair, isn’t it Vaughn?"

Vaughn nodded and turned around to address the gathering of the servants. "This is going to happen once in your employment. We are providing you with the option of walking away."

My eyes move to the crowd of the servants. First they processed the words, after that they understood what he said and their eyes widened at the words.

This was rare. This was extremely rare. Servants never were given the opportunity to walk away from the house that they had chosen to serve and if it was a royal family that they were serving then it was a completely different event.

Servants were never given opportunities to walk out of employment but rather thrown out of it.

I scowled at the fact. What was he doing?

"If you two want," Vaughn addressed the two people that work on the floor, "you can go out of the courtroom and towards your freedom."

The two of the culprits immediately looked up at the man and it was clear that they were thinking about doing it.

It obviously could not be helped when the invitation was so tempting.

That was when both of them stood up and the soldiers opened the doors for them.

From the balcony I watched as they both walked out first, slowly and suspiciously and then when they reached the entrance of the great courtroom, they hurried out of it.

Everyone including me was staring at the entrance of the courtroom from where they had disappeared after turning to the side.

That was it. They had walked away from their employer.

But was it what it seemed like to be?

From that night, what I had experienced, this seems to be so simple and so straight that I could not believe it.

Everyone was waiting for something. My eyes watched the face of every servant who was now thinking of doing the same.

And why would they not?

Being in the employment of a royal family that was human was a different issue and being in the employment of a ruling family that could dream them dry was horrifying.

And then I heard it.

One of the servants took a brave step of stepping forward but stopped when we heard multiple footsteps come from the entrance.

My eyes narrowed slightly into the direction of the multiple footsteps. Who was coming in now?

My jaw fell on the sight of the soldiers that just entered. The soldiers were nothing out of the ordinary but it was what they were holding.

They were holding the head of Olivia and the other culprit that had escaped.

They were holding the head by the hair as the blood dripped from the open neck that was cut away from the body.

Oh..my..god...

I held the gasp in and leaned back, unable to take the sight in front of me.

The soldiers stood in front of the King before placing the head of the culprit in front of his feet as if offering it as a sacrifice to make him happy.

Tristan straightened up and moved his head from the previous tilt that he was looking at everything with.

"Is there anyone else that wants to free themselves of this captivity of unemployment?" He asked everyone loudly and clearly. "This is your one last chance. I assure you, you will never have to work again."

Of course, there was the freedom involved in the first place.

Tristan has just created an illusion for them.

Vaughn turned to the one worker that had stepped forward to walk out. "Do you wish to walk out now?"

He quickly shook his head and fell back into the line. His eyes went back to the droplets of blood that had left at trace.

The entire courtroom fell silent once again before the king finally decided to speak up. "This is the last time I am issuing a warning along with a punishment. The next time anything like this happens," he paused before he stood up, "which means no more rumours, no more talk than needed,"

He stepped down from the elevated flooring, "anything out of the necessary required from you, will have you off with your head."

I held my breath in as he moved closer to Solomon’s mate. "And if you believe in them, spread them for the instead of reporting them, expect worst punishment to be delivered to you."
