The Princess's Dangerous Vampire Mate-Chapter 235: The King’s order - V
Solomon and Bert were not with me today and I did not think much about it. The first person I saw when I was walking to the chambers of the king was Nokul, who must have sense my presence because once again his eyes moved to my feet and he bowed.
"Your Highness," he acknowledged, "how may I be helpful to you?"
I glanced at the door. "Is he inside?"
Nokul nodded and stepped aside before opening the door for me. Just as I stepped inside the door closed and Tristen walked out of one of the rooms.
"Genevieve?" He appeared to be mildly surprised but concealed it again. "Is it something important?"
He was dismissing me and I also noticed that Tristan had not smiled once. All the gentle expressions that he always had while talking to me did not appear on his face. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
"I heard about Aron." I informed and he nodded at the information. He stood straight with his eyes unyielding and his hands behind his back.
He titled his head ever so slightly, "Where did you hear it from?"
If I told him that then Merilyn would be the next person to have her head cut off. "I think this is the only gossip the maids have for today."
He stared at me before tilting his head to the other side. "You lie,’’ he said, "again."
I stood silent for a moment gathering my thoughts. "I know it, Tristan. Is it really important to know who I know it from?"
He nodded.
I huffed. "Why is he being punished?"
"Why do you think he should not be?" He presented me with a counter question as if he had no idea about the reality.
"Why not?" I stepped closer to him. "Do you really think your friend is capable of biting someone?"
He smirked. "Did you ever think that it would be Marilyn who could drain you dry?"
I want to strangle him now. " Would you stop it? Can’t you answer my question?"
"What question is it, Genevieve?" He threw my way. "Do you expect me to not punish someone who broke the rules, especially when he is my friend? What do you think happens when people get to know about it?"
"Is he really at fault?" I proceeded with caution. "Are you sure that it was not the human that tried to tempt Aron?"
It was scary to have his expression changed within moments of hearing my words. If I was worried about Tristan not smiling while talking to me then this was a whole other aspect because now I was talking to the angry Tristan that I had seen on the seat of the king.
He shook his head very slowly as he said the words, "it was not just any maid that told you that."
My heart picked up. "How can you say that Tristan? Who else will hear it from?!"
He chuckled in mockery. "You are a human Genevieve which means you will never doubt the human that was bitten like you were but you do." He told me as a matter of fact. " And since you do it means you know the human was at fault."
"And you know that too but you punish your friend for it?" I said with an incredulous expression on my face. "You know more than I do!"
"I do," he admitted without shame. "I do know much more than you do. I know more about what humans think of vampires than you do and I know what impact it will have on them."
I was frustrated with the lack of information I had. "What impact will they have, Tristan? Do you not think that what happened with your friend could happen with everyone? What if it happened with Lara? Would you punish Lara too?"
"Yes," he said about waiting to even think about it.
All the anger I had melted down and I looked at him in disbelief and horror. "Why?"
He slowly removed the anger from his eyes but they were still firm and hard just as he was on this matter. "Because I do not want to be a king who shall rule the people with fear. Do not misunderstand because I understand that fear is important but I do want respect. Respect I shall gain when they understand that we are not a threat."
I huffed and pointed my finger to his face. "As long as you have two pointed teeth unlike humans and drink blood for a living they will never not fear you."
He gulped. "I know." He whispered slowly that it was a whisper to himself.
It was then I realised that Tristan knew what the truth was but he was still trying. Unlike any other king written about in history Tristan just did not want to act on this fear but rather wanted respect.
Inside he craved it.
But what I did not understand was, he knew that he had created fear in people’s hearts with what he was and with how unstable the ruling family was.
The previous ruling family, humans, were thrown over by vampires, creatures who suck the blood out of people for living, there was never going to be peace amongst the two for long.
A silent understanding passed over both of us. Both of us knew the reality of what was presented to us and both of us knew how difficult it was. Yet, one of us wanted to try.
"This is wrong," I told him, "When Aron is not a complete fault he cannot be the only one suffering."
Tristan looked away. "The pain that the human is in, he would understand the gravity of what he has done and his death is inevitable."
The human was dying. "So what?" I could not control as the anger bubbled inside me when I realised what was happening. "Aron is just going to be a sacrifice?!" I waited for him to deny.
But His silence said it all.
