Chapter 157: A beloved? - III

The hallways, awfully familiar, were empty. Even though I was not familiar with the north I knew that the hallways were never empty. One or two servants were always seen.

But there was one thing that shocked me the most , which is why I stopped at the sight of two people carving something out of the wall.

It was the symbol of the royal family of Astria and it was being called out by two men.

What was happening?

"Move forward and see," I heard Tristan from behind me, "move forward and see for yourself."

I did as told.

I ran forward. I closed my skirts in my hands raised them a bit higher and ran out of the hallway to where I could see from the balcony the entire palace . . Of Astria.

"we. . ." I matar as my eyes talk in every familiar detail of the palace but this time without the crest of the family. "How?"

I could feel him stand behind me. My skin warmed knowing that he was close enough to touch me but he did not.

"A lot of history is hidden behind these walls. You do not want to see any of it." He spoke and tsked under his breath.

"B-but why?" My chaotic expression calmed down as I turned to him with accusing eyes. "What did you do?"

He stared at me before his eyes squinted in the slightest bit and then he smiled at me. "You are still the same at the core." He nodded before he held my hand and started dragging me down the stairs.

I did not bother stopping him, rather was preoccupied by watching everyone. I did not find the familiar faces of the soldiers or the ministers that could be seen early in the morning running the court. So we were not guests in this country and the latter thought that what I had in my mind was something I did not want to acknowledge. Could it be possible?

Two men opened the huge doors and then came the courtroom of the queen. It was empty.

How was it empty on a bright day? Everyone should have been here!

"What’s going on?" I whispered yet my voice echoed.

"I’ll tell you," he said and dragged me until we were right in front of the throne.

He stopped when both of us stood in front of it but turned me around to face him.

"The throne is empty Tristan," I stated the fact in front of me to him with my heart beat rising, "why?"

He turned to me. "Do you remember about reforming yourself Genevieve?"

I blinked at the sudden question, "Yes, I do."

He smiled and pointed somewhere making me look there as well. "Then that throne is yours."

I turned to him and then back at the throne. The throne of Astria? Mine?

"What did you do?" I turned to him, "did you kill her?"

He stared at me from the corner of my eyes. "Not yet."

I turned to the throne. "It’s mine?"

He nodded.

I kept on staring at it until I realised what my thoughts regarding it were.

I lowered my eyes. This room was where I I stood lost in this country before they had given the order for my execution.

"I don’t want it." I told him.

"You do not know what you want."

I frowned and looked at him. "I do."

He hummed lazily.

I frowned slightly. Where was he getting at? What was he doing? He was not answering any of my questions and every time I asked him something he twisted it around.

"Where’s the queen?" I asked him again in a quiet voice hoping that he would tell me the time.

"Do you know a creature like me can sense fear?" He turned slightly to look at me and it did not ease my nerves. "We can sense everything, especially fear in a human. It is the fear that feeds the beast inside us."

He turned to me and stepped closer. " What are you afraid of Genevieve? Afraid of me all the darkness that I belong to?"

I shook my head. I did not know what I feared more.

He hummed and started stepping closer to main making me stumble back slightly before taking steps just as he did but in the opposite direction.

"Tri-Tristan. . ."

He tilted his head slightly as he observed me, "You look like you could cry right now genevieve. Does it prove my assumptions true then? You are afraid of me?"

Why was he stepping into my space? I wanted him to stop but he continued.

"Tell me, my love—"

"I am not your love!" I screamed at the top of my voice, "I am not your love! Stop calling me your love!"

His eyebrows shot up in an instant and he gave me a mocking smile. "Oh?" He taunted before turning to the door, "Vaughn." He said and the doors opened and the said man entered.

I was slightly amazed because Tristan had merely whispered his name.

"Call everyone in." Tristan commanded and Vaughn bowed before moving out.

Within moments from the side of the courtroom I watched as every man entered. There were not many in number. Not at all what one could call an army but only tens of them at least.

What was happening?

"My men, my fellow," Tristan gave me a glance, "creatures of the dark."

Now I knew what the glance at me was for.

"Today I introduce you to the love of my life, Genevieve Hearthorne, soon to be the queen of this country and rule alongside me. My beloved."

My heart stopped at his words. Everyman nodded and I could even see one or two smiling.

"She is to be respected just like you will respect me. She has the highest title of us all." He turned to me and his eyes moved to my face, "soon she would join us all." He said before everyone erupted in cheers.
