Chapter 124: Dining with the king - I

The king of the north had invited me because according to Tristan, Lunch was already over and even though I had not eaten anything I felt nauseous.

"Is that really the king of the north?" I asked as soon as we stepped into the room and he closed the door behind. Once again in the familiar environment I sat down on my bed.

"Yes." He answered and took a seat on the chair kept alongside a writing table with ink and pages.

I bit my teeth as I once again thought about how the man looked. "Kings often have a concept of dressing in a grander way. He was wearing what are commonly seen ministers and noble men wear. Even they dressed in a grand way when they met with the king and I have never seen my father in such dressed down state. Until unless he is in his nightwear."

He laughed at that. A quick one it was but it was enough to take me into the past filled with memories of him laughing along with me.

"Darius does not concern himself with such materialistic affairs. The most dressed he is, when he has to go out to meet his people and then as well you won’t find him as dressed up as a father is when he attends the matter of the court or even when he sits down to have breakfast."

My eyebrows rose in shock at that. Aching for men in power was not eager to show that he was the man in charge was truly fascinating.

" Wait," I remembered what he just said, " Darius?"

Something flashed his eyes, "Yes," he nodded, "That’s the king’s name."

"What!" Now the shock had grown too much for me to control it and I screamed out loud. "You are calling a king by his name?"

"You take my name every time we talk to me and that does not bother you then." He muttered something under his breath and squinted my eyes trying to make it out.

" What did you say?"

He shook his head. "I think I might have underestimated our acquaintanceship. One can call it friendship."

He was FRIENDS with a king? A king that did not think twice before killing and imprisoning people?

Never mind that, how did he manage to make a king his friend?

"I—" I know came to my door interrupting me in between and Tristan stood up.

"I suppose the maid has arrived. She is the one hand he dressed and ready for the evening. I will collect you once it is time for the dinner to go on."

I watched as without any word he left and the maid entered.

"My lady, what colour would you like to wear satin night? Should I get the lilac or the dark blue?"

"Dark blue Merilyn," I said as I was looking at the door from that Tristan had very eagerly escaped our conversation from, "You—" I turned to the women, to the redhead, not the blonde one that I had seen all my life.

"You’re. . not. . ." I blinked my tears away and turned to recover from her who was looking at me with surprise.

"I do not know Marilyn but if you want I can I have her sent for you instead."

I laughed at that. I turned to look at her as a tear slipped down my cheek and I smiled at her, "If you can find her and tell her that I am calling her back please do." I sniffed and sat on the bed again.

"But you are crying my lady!" She gasped at the tears and came to me, " I must call her at once if you want—"

"Please," I wiped my tears and turned to the dresses, "I will wear the dark blue one if you must know and now please prepare the bath water at once."

Merilyn was a distinct memory that I shall honour as much as I can. No one could ever replace her.

I heard the gong. It was the time for dinner now and I was waiting for Tristan to come and take me along with him.

A knock at my door and I allowed the person to come in thinking that it was Tristan but only to my surprise it was the maid.

"My lady, the king and sir Tristan have asked you to come to the dinner and I shall escort you to it. Due to some circumstances, Sir Tristan could not come."

"Oh?" I frowned at that immediately. Tristan had promised me that he would come and accompany me to the dining hall. The man had already broken his words. "Let us go then."

Even though Tristan had lied to me and broken his words, I could not keep a king waiting.

The maid whose name I soon learnt was Anna was assigned to me as my lady in waiting here which only made me think that Tristen might be the friend of the King like he had told me to because otherwise it was not common for a merchant’s wife to have a lady in waiting.

"Here it is," She whispered as the large doors to the dining room appeared in front of us.

Butler opened up the door for me and I stepped in as gracefully as I had been taught all my life.

"Tristan and You hig—" the words froze in my mouth as I searched for the first person that I had taken the name of in my greeting.

It was not both of them sitting there, rather just one and the king it was.

I bowed my head slightly, ready to apologize on the behalf of my friend, "He is late, I apologize—"

"Do not embarrass me for that my lady," he said and looked up, "is not going to be here for some time and I would ask you to join me if that is not much trouble."

I stared at him in slight wonder. "No, your highness, it is no trouble at all." I stepped in more at the dining table and the butter put out a seat for me.

The king smiled at me and hopefully, as kind as the expression was I hope that night would be at me.
