Chapter 65: Kraken

Previously...

"You, can I borrow your sword for a second?"

As the nervous sea guard watched his companions ride to their deaths, he unsheathed his blade and hurriedly handed it to Wise.

"Please be careful with it, ’tis my only one," He said, as he reluctantly gave Wise the blade.

Wise weighed the weapon in his hand and frowned. It was a quality sword but still highly insufficient.

’I’ll have to get a sword when we port."

Now for the monster...

If he wanted to beat something that powerful, he would need to boost his chances somehow.

It would have been easier if he transformed, but Wise was not too keen on announcing that he was a dragon to everyone on the ship.

Wise hopped into the water, but instead of sinking, his feet made contact with the waves, sending a small circular wave.

But he did not sink.

It was a basic spirit technique.

"Aofie, can you use Spirit Step?"

Spirit step was a basic but difficult technique taught to people who could wield abilities.

With Spirit Step, you could walk on the ocean as though it were solid ground.

Aofie shook her head. "I’m still learning it."

That meant she would be useless in this battle. The only one who could still support him, albeit from a distance, was Daphne.

But the range was so much that even her help would be very inconsequential.

He was going alone.

Moments later...

Boom!

Just as Wise kicked the captain out of the way, he spun mid air, using the monster’s head as leverage to launch himself back.

The Kraken let out a loud shrill and turned to face him, its eyes burning with rage, having lost its meal.

The Kraken was massive, more than capable of sinking the boat with ease. At a glance it looked like a humongous octopus, but it was more than that.

It had rough puffy skin that was radiating a soft light at its creases, but that skin ended at its head—

At its head, instead of puffy skin, the skin was darkened, and a black bone-like structure, resembling a giant humanoid skull shielded its head.

Its tentacles were riddled with spikes all around its surface and its suckers had rows of teeth for tearing large prey apart.

From beneath the bony capsule, Wise could see the monster’s watery green eyes, glaring down at him.

"Come on, don’t tell me you’re—"

Whoosh!

A colossal explosion erupted from the ocean as a tentacle came flying, almost flattening Wise where he stood.

Wise had already jumped to the side and was racing at the Kraken with the ocean guard’s blade.

As he charged towards the monster, multiple tentacles rose high up into the air like skyscrapers, and then they began to descend.

Boom!

As the tentacles came flying crashing down, the ocean waters became turbulent, making it harder for Wise to reach the monster.

A tentacle hurtled forward, parting the waves to ram into him, but he shifted his stance and drove his sword right into the tentacle.

As the tentacle was rushing past him, the sword was tearing into its flesh, spilling blood as well as spraying water in his face.

And then Wise pulled out his sword, just to jump over another tentacle.

Swooosh!

Slicing in a circular arc, Wise split the tentacle halfway, unable to completely sever it because of how blunt the blade was.

The tentacle fell into the water, sinking deep into the ocean, just as another one emerged to replace it.

Wise bent his body backward as the tentacle cut towards him, bravely avoiding it.

A rush of wind washed past him, followed by a small wave that bathed him with water.

Wise glanced at the monster, only to realize that although he had been trying to reach it, he had not made much progress.

"These annoying tentacles."

They were keeping him from its main body.

"I guess I’ll have to cut my way through them."

Wise lifted his sword, calling upon the power of Daphne’s ability.

This caused the shadows beneath his feet to climb up to the blade, rippling across the steel like destructive serpents.

He stared up at the wall of tentacles that stood in his way, his expression sharp.

"Let’s try this again."

Wise hurtled forward, this time even faster than before. The water was splashing around him, soaking his clothes as he stomped on them to boost his speed.

And then the first tentacle came, charging at him like a train.

This time, Wise did not dodge. There was no need to...

He lifted his sword about his head, holding the handle with both hands and cleaved the tentacle right from the tip forward.

SKREEEEEEEE!

The Kraken scratched as its blood bathed the ocean.

Wise was covered in that blood as well as flesh remnants as the tentacle kept pushing forward, parting as it collided with the shadow blade.

And then Wise jumped, flipping above the tentacle before landing atop it and continuing his change.

Voooom!

Two colossal spiked tentacles shot forward from both sides, hoping to trap him in a pincer attack.

A sound wave exploded forward along with steam from the sheer amount of force created by their collision.

But high above the tentacles, Wise was drifting through the air, a pillar of shadows crumbling below him.

The Kraken tried to pull back, but it was already too late. Wise had made it to its head.

He pulled his sword back and descended upon the kraken with devastating force.

But Wise knew his attack would be insufficient. This blade, even with his enhancement, was not strong enough to rip that helmet off its head.

’Maybe I should use it?’

He had recently acquired a powerful new skill, one that had enough firepower to rip it to shreds.

[Thunder Saint’s Blade!]

Pulsing electricity exploded out of Wise’s hand, rising from his palm like an imposing pillar of light.

As the lightning surged, he was suddenly overcome by weakness. The lighting was dancing out of control, attempting to form the blade but failing to.

He quickly deactivated the skill and stared at his palms, the Thunder Saint’s blade had seared his palms, leaving a mark of lightning on them.

That skill... he was not ready for it.

And in that short moment of distraction—

CRASH!!

A colossal tentacle slammed into his body, the spikes ripping into his flesh and launching him high up into the clouds.

Wise coughed out blood, his body throbbing with pain.

His insides felt messed up, like he had been hit in the gut with a sledgehammer the size of a tree.

Not only did his whole body feel sore from the blunt force, he was bleeding as well from the holes the creature had bored in his body, his clothes stained with blood.

But as Wise found himself high up in the air, away from the eyes of everyone on the ship, a crazy idea came to mind....

And a dark smile found its way to his lips.

"Transform."
