Chapter 53: Unlikely Meeting

Wise and Freya left the vicinity of the suspicious potion shop and continued into the city. After walking for some time, Wise stopped in front of a bakery and glanced inside of it.

The bakery had a large glass wall which made it easy for bypassers to see the pastries they had inside. What caught Wise’s attention were the glazed doughnuts that were gleaming like polished diamonds.

"Let’s get something before we go, what do you think?"

Freya nodded in agreement, her eyes locked on a large loaf of coconut bread. "I’m sure the girls will like some bread."

But before they got into the shop, Freya grabbed onto Wise’s shirt and pulled him back.

It was not too pronounced, but she had noticed something different about Wise today.

"Are you okay? You seem a bit down."

Although he had slept over it, Wise had not completely recovered from what happened to Rosalind.

But he did not want Freya to know about it so he just smiled and played off her concern. "I’m just a little homesick."

Freya must have realised how much of an obvious lie that was but she remained silent, choosing to let it slide for now.

They both entered the room and were greeted by a wonderful aroma, the sweet scent of sugar, butter and flour mixed and baked to perfection.

Wise walked over to the counter and glanced at the overhead menu.

The menu was a simple blackboard, but whoever had written down the items had done artistically, using various colours of chalk to make it appealing.

They had a lot of pastries, some he knew, while others were food he had never heard of.

Behind the counter was a young Ork who smiled at them as they approached. She had a red and white checkered flat cap on as well as a red dress.

"Good morning. What would you like to order?"

Wise stared at the menu, still unsure of what to get. Initially, he had only planned on getting doughnuts by now he was considering having breakfast here.

He nudged Freya with his elbow. "Have you eaten?"

Freya shook her head. "Not yet."

"Then how about we grab breakfast here?" Wise asked while stroking his chin.

Freya nodded repeatedly before giving Wise a thumbs up.

The cashier lifted a finger to get their attention and then said, "If you want breakfast then can I recommend our breakfast package?"

"Hmmmm." Freya seemed a bit skeptical about the meal. "Will it have coconut bread?"

The cashier nodded. "Of course!"

And that was all it took to convince her. "Then we’ll have it!"

After writing their orders down on a piece of paper, the cashier handed the paper to another woman who quickly organized their food.

Not up to five minutes later, they were both given trays filled with food. The tray had a cup of coffee with heart shaped foam, a piece of coconut bread, fried eggs and a few other pastries.

The cashier smiled and directed toward the tables. "Enjoy your meal!"

’Now where to sit...’

Wise was about to sit at the edge of the room, next to the glass window when he noticed someone munching on an absurd amount of cupcakes.

Freya noticed her as well and furrowed her brows. "Is that—"

"Princess Aofie?" Wise cut in. "It seems so..."

"I rarely see her even though we both stay in the same house, I never would have thought I would find her here..."

Wise noticed that there was no one sitting around where she sat, with the closest person being two tables away.

He was not sure if it was a custom, pure coincidence or if she had a negative reputation that caused this.

And frankly, he didn’t not care.

Wise began walking forward. "Let’s pay her a visit shall we?"

Freya nodded and glanced at the princess.

Aofie looked like she didn’t want to be disturbed, that was pretty clear from the distance everyone gave her.

But Freya did not get to tell Wise this before he walked up to her.

"Ah, Princess Aofie, who would have thought I would run into you in such a place." He pulled a chair back for Freya before sitting down beside her.

Click!

He placed his tray on the table and smiled at the princess, without asking if he could join her.

Freya was half expecting Aofie to empty her cup of coffee on Wise’s head, but to her surprise, Aofie only seemed mildly irked.

She placed the cupcake she was about to eat back on her plate and frowned.

Wise smiled in return. ’It’s best I get to know her a little before tomorrow.’ Tomorrow was going to be rather ’eventful.’ He thought.

Aofie glared at Wise, her golden eyes glistening with undisguised animosity.

"Xanthos... have you come to beg for a compromise in light of our match tomorrow?"

Wise almost laughed. "It’s lovely to see you are still in high spirits, princess. But you watched the matches haven’t you?"

He picked up his fork and knife and began cutting into the egg. "I believe everyone would say I am in favour of winning, don’t you think?"

Aofie smiled, her smile more predatory than happy. "I will admit, I was surprised to find out Mr Anonymous was Tyris, but she wasn’t even giving the fight her all."

She picked up her cupcake and took a bite off it, this time eating more elegantly than they had caught her doing earlier.

"Is that so..." Wise swallowed before speaking. "Are you saying you could have beaten both of them if you were in my shoes?"

Aofie grined and folded her arms across her chest. "Of course!" She huffed.

"I’m not as incompetent as you who has to slave away to a juvenile dragon who doesn’t even have a territory."

’Me? Incompetent?’

Wise could see Freya about to say something from the corner of his eyes but he taped her hand, prompting her to stop.

He chuckled. "Of course you would, I don’t doubt your competence one bit."

The princess smiled proudly, that was until Wise finished his sentence.

"I mean.... I’m sure Tryis would have found a way to hand you the match."

"Or better yet..." Wise bit into his coconut bread and washed it down with coffee.

"...Your mother would have found a way to screw the other participants just like she did me."

Thump!

Aofie banged her hands against the table and leaned forward, but then she calmed herself halfway, forcing out a smile. "I’ll make you eat those words tomorrow.

Freya laughed before covering her mouth with her hand to restrict herself.

Wise on the other hand glanced at Aofie, feigning surprise. "Is that so, then make sure you do a lot of practice..."

He cleaned his mouth with his napkin and placed it on the plate before rising.

"Bring your best princess, but don’t train so hard that you forget to pack your bags."

Aofie’s eyes widened in shock but before she could clap back, Wise had already begun to leave.

With one final chuckle, both he and Freya left, leaving her seething with rage.

Wise did not want to simply win tomorrow, he needed to show Aofie that the difference between them was vast.

So far his performance as Xanthos had been enough for Xanthos, Wise’s right hand man. But tomorrow was the day he revealed his true self.

Tomorrow was the day he became Wise, the SkyFire Dragon.

That was the only way he would earn her respect.

And then finally, the day of the match was upon them.
