The Path Of A True King.-Chapter 30: Heeee Called.
Chapter 70
Mai returned home in a sleek black car after an exhausting but enjoyable fashion show session with Kim.
Back at the bar, the two guards were seated inside, eating and chatting with Kai, who was laughing along with them.
From the staircase, Sylvia, Mai’s mother, descended with a teasing smile. "How was your little date?"
Mai immediately looked away, refusing to answer as she stepped into the bar. Sylvia chuckled and followed. "Are you really going to ignore your own mother?"
Mai snorted. "I have nothing to tell you."
Kai smirked as he looked at her. "Look at our little princess, back at last. So, how was it?"
Mai shot him an annoyed glare. "Elijah just saw it as spending time with a friend."
Kai raised an eyebrow. "And that’s a problem?"
One of the guards chuckled and chimed in, "Didn’t expect the boss to be so dense. It’s obvious Miss Mai likes him."
Mai quickly retorted, "I don’t like him! My friend Kim does. Like hell!"
Kai gave her a questioning look but didn’t press the issue. "I thought you’d fallen for him after he saved your life."
Mai let out a sigh. "Yeah... I didn’t really get the chance to thank him properly."
The other guard, Vico, chuckled. "The boss is pretty scary, though."
Kai turned to him. "What do you mean?"
Ray, the first guard, leaned forward. "This morning, he had this aura about him. Scared the hell out of us."
Sylvia laughed. "So that’s why you two stood frozen for thirty minutes after he left?"
"Can you blame us?" Vico replied, taking a sip of his drink.
Mai shook her head. "I didn’t notice it, but Kim said the same thing."
Kai nodded, his thoughts drifting elsewhere.
Sylvia turned to him. "So, where is our little boss?"
"He went to dinner with his mother and sister."
Sylvia suddenly grabbed a cup and hurled it at Kai, who caught it with ease. "What was that for?!" 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
"Says the boy who never takes his aunt to dinner! Not once have you brought me anything. Heartless!"
Kai scratched his head with a chuckle. "Alright, alright. I’ll take you today."
Sylvia grinned triumphantly. "Boys, you’re in charge of the bar tonight. I’ll be going to dinner!"
She, a woman in her late 30s, practically skipped up the stairs like an excited teenager heading for a shower.
Kai turned to Mai. "You coming?"
Mai shook her head as she collapsed onto a chair. "Nope, I’m good."
Just then, Mai’s phone rang. She sighed, already annoyed, before answering. "What do you want now?"
Kim’s excited voice shrieked through the speaker. "Heeee caaaaalled!"
"What?" Mai blinked in confusion.
"Hehehehe! Elijah! He called to check if I got home safely and even wished me goodnight!" Kim bragged, pride dripping from her voice.
Instantly, the room’s atmosphere shifted. Kai, Ray, and Vico felt a chilling aura creeping in.
They instinctively tried to get up and leave, but Kai wasn’t fast enough.
"Damn it," he muttered as Mai’s grip tightened around his wrist.
"Why didn’t he call me too?" Mai growled, squeezing even harder, her breathing technique activating and enhancing her strength.
Kai winced in pain. "Mai—my hand! My hand! It’s not my fault!"
Kim’s laughter rang through the phone. "Hahaha, he didn’t call you! That means I was the first person in his mind. The only one!"
Mai’s grip tightened further.
"Can you stop teasing her?!" Kai yelled in frustration.
Ray leaned back, taking a slow drag from his cigarette. "Vice Leader Kai, use all your strength."
"Damn it, can you two help before she breaks my hand?!" Kai snapped.
Vico took another sip of his drink. "Yeah... nope. We’re not getting involved in that."
Mai suddenly calmed down. "When did he call you?"
"Like five minutes ago," Kim answered.
Mai immediately cut the call and placed her phone on the table, crossing her arms in irritation.
Finally, she released Kai’s hand, who sighed in relief and shook it out.
"Damn it, Mai! Why punish my hand?! It didn’t do anything!"
Mai ignored him, staring at her phone.
Kai sat down next to her. "What are you doing?"
"Waiting for him to call."
Kai scoffed. "He’s probably at dinner with his mother right now. Don’t expect anything."
Mai frowned. "He called Kim just a few minutes ago, so he should be free."
Seeing her determination, Kai hesitated before reaching for his own phone, intending to send a quick text to Elijah.
But before he could type, Mai shot him a deathly glare. "If you text him, you’re dead."
Kai scratched his head. "Didn’t you say you don’t like him?"
"It doesn’t matter. He should call anyway."
Minutes passed.
Then ten.
No call came.
Mai’s expression slowly shifted to disappointment as she listened to Kai and the others laughing at a joke Ray had told.
Just as she was about to stand up and head to her room, her phone rang.
The name on the screen: Elijah.
A triumphant smile spread across Mai’s face. "Shut up," she muttered to the guys before answering. "Hello?"
Elijah’s calm voice came through. "Hey."
Mai immediately went on the offensive. "Why did you call me fifteen minutes after Kim? And why did you call her first?"
Elijah chuckled. "You answer the phone with questions now?"
"Answer them."
"Alright. I called late because Kai gave Tony the wrong address, so the SUV was delayed. And I called Kim first because her name was at the top of my call log since I recently saved her."
Mai paused. "Oh..."
Elijah chuckled again. "Did you get home safely?"
A smile crept onto her face. "Yeah, I did."
"Good. Tony’s here, so I gotta go. Have a good night."
"You too," Mai replied before hanging up. Then, without missing a beat, she called Kim. "Heee caaaaalled me too!"
Before Kim could respond, Mai ended the call with a smirk.
"Saves her right?" she muttered to herself.
Kai, still nursing his sore hand, glanced at his phone and groaned. "Oh yeah... I did give Tony the wrong address. Guess I was more tired than I thought."
