Aeric stared at the notifications without even any words to speak. There was so much to point to, but his mind just couldn't focus on any of them.

He looked left and right. Then, he noticed a new leaf turn brighter and showed Melina's Main Skill that he had just claimed amongst his other Skills.

He waited. There was silence, nothing.

This content is taken from fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm.

He looked to the sky. "Well, aren't you coming?!" he yelled.

No answer.

Aeric looked down at the interface and scowled. 'This bastard. Is he hiding in shame after laughing at me last time?

When he waited a little more and the God of Erothyria didn't show up, the system chimed with a new notification.

[You are now leaving the Soul River]

Aeric sighed. 'I guess it would be shameful and difficult for any man to face the person that stole a woman from him.'

A smirk of satisfaction escaped him, and he allowed his mind to drift away, pulled by the rush of power as he left the River.

He woke up lying on the bed. Looking beside him, he saw Melina's naked body wrapped under his arms. She was already fast asleep, a calm smile on her face, and her head resting on his chest.

Aeric couldn't help it when he smiled, and he also couldn't help it when a rush of heavy sleep came and abruptly took him.

~ ~ ~

Morning came.

The first thing Aeric felt was warmth. Not the kind that came from the heavy blankets or the crackling hearth but something closer — too close. His eyes fluttered open, and his heart stopped as he registered the silver strands of hair sprawled across the pillow beside him. Melina.

For a moment, he froze, his mind racing.

Oh no no no no! Why is she here? What in the nine heavens — how did this happen?

His eyes darted to the rest of the room. The bed, too spacious to justify proximity, suddenly felt claustrophobic. 'Oh no. We had sex last night.' He facepalmed. 'I'm so used to waking up in my room that I almost forgot.'

Slowly, he pulled his hand underneath her head and placed her gently on the bed, careful as to not wake her. Then he glanced down. Sure enough, her arm was draped lazily over his waist, her breathing steady.

Aeric's face burned. We must have really gone hard at it last night. I can still smell our fluids in the air. This is bad. Very, very bad. What if mother had gone to my room and didn't find me?

Carefully, he started inching toward the edge of the bed, sliding out from under her arm. Then successfully escaping her grasp, he headed towards a door, reaching his escape. Just a little further, just a—

"Where are you going?"

Aeric froze, nearly falling to the ground as one foot was suspended in his tiptoeing pose.

Melina was suddenly fully awake, seated on the bed, her voice groggy yet teasing. Her half-lidded eyes stared at him, her head tilted slightly as if amused by his panic.

"Uh, I… I was just…" He gestured vaguely at the door. "I thought I'd let you sleep."

Melina raised a brow, propping herself up on one elbow. "Without saying goodbye? Rude."

Aeric scratched the back of his neck, refusing to meet her gaze. "I mean at this point it would be good morning, wouldn't it?"

She tilted her gaze at him.

Aeric shrugged. "I just figured you wouldn't, uh, notice."

Melina smirked, clearly enjoying his discomfort. "Well, I did. So? What's the rush?"

"The rush," Aeric said, his voice rising an octave, "is that if anyone — anyone — sees me leaving your room, I'll have a lot more than a scolding to deal with." He stood abruptly, adjusting his tunic. "I need to go. Now."

Melina sighed dramatically, leaning back against the pillows. "Fine, Bondmaster. Run away before someone catches you."

"Thank you." Aeric moved to the door but hesitated, glancing back. "And for the record, we never did this, okay? Last night was amazing, but don't go telling anyone that the Son of Starlight slept with a Daughter of Moonlight."

"Oh, okay," she said thoughtfully. "But what are you going to do when the baby bump comes?"

Aeric's eyes widened. "Baby bu—!" His voice cracked, and Melina stifled a laugh. "Now's not the time for jokes, Melina."

"Ha ha. I just like seeing you like this. All nervous."

Aeric groaned and straightened his body to show her he wasn't messing about. "We are never talking about this again until I decide to bring it up."

"As long as we get to do it again," she said to him with a smile.

Aeric gave her one final glance. "Get ready for school," he instructed her before opening the door and disappearing.

He practically sprinted back to his room, his mind reeling. He checked every corner of the hallway, paranoid that someone had seen him. When he finally shut the door behind him, he leaned against it, exhaling sharply.

"Evelyn," he said to his maid who was dressing his room. "I was in that bed all night, you saw me when you came in this morning and that will be the end of that."

Evelyn stared at him, dropping the cloth in her hand and blinked. "Very well, sir."

He directed her to leave his room and once she did, he peeled off his clothes and tossed them onto a chair. He stepped into the bath, scrubbing away the remnants of his mortification as though water could cleanse the situation he was in.

He dressed quickly, fastening the buttons on his shirt with trembling hands. Just as he reached for the door to leave, there was a knock.

"Aeric, your presence is requested in the courtroom."

Ilyon's voice carried an unusual edge, and Aeric's stomach sank.

He pushed open the heavy double doors of the courtroom, his chest tight with apprehension.

The sight was truly a troubling one. His mother, Mother Guinevere, sat regally on the throne, her expression unreadable. To her right stood Ilyon, his head bowed low, while to her left was the maid from last night. The maid's trembling hands clutched the hem of her apron, her eyes fixed on the ground in shame.

"Oh shit," Aeric muttered under his breath. "She knows, doesn't she?"
