Chapter 110: Stained With Gold.

Ezra wanted to die.

He wanted to end his life.

After... three whole rounds with Kaelis, he had finally snapped out of his heat, and his mind was starting to function again.

Somehow, near the end of it, he had fallen asleep.

The sleep didn’t last long. Ezra kept his eyes closed, feeling his head resting on something soft and warm, a clear difference from the rough, leaf-covered ground.

And he knew they were still in the woods.

Which meant—

He was lying on someone’s lap.

Since he was basically naked in the middle of nowhere, there was only one person it could be.

’What have I done?’ Ezra thought, feeling mortified. ’I can’t believe this is happening again...’

He didn’t even want to think about it. Everything had been an accident. Again.

It was because of the cultists.

Because of their pheromones.

Because of everything that happened.

As if that wasn’t enough, the cultists knew he was an omega. Ricardo’s family had been torn apart.

And now—

The prince he disliked the most knew too.

Ezra squeezed his eyes shut tighter, letting the muffled forest sounds and the thick, damp scent of moss press in, all making him even less motivated to face the world.

He would rather stay like this.

He wanted to disappear.

’If it weren’t for Lior, I would just end everything right—’

"I know you’re awake."

That voice.

Annoying.

Obnoxious.

Ezra bit his tongue, his eye twitching slightly, which was already enough to give him away.

"Feeling shy, Captain?"

Ezra gave up.

He slowly opened his eyes, wincing as sunlight stabbed at them. Afternoon heat pulsed on his skin; the sun was a harsh, blinding white overhead, scattering golden dust motes through the green canopy above.

His vision blurred for a few seconds before clearing.

And then—

Kaelis.

Leaning back casually, his hands resting behind him, rolling his shoulders as his long silver hair spilled over the ground.

"Feeling better?" Kaelis asked, glancing down at him without fully turning his head.

Ezra’s face grew hot, a mix of embarrassment and irritation.

"I-I’m fine. I just need—"

He tried to sit up.

A deep, hot spike of pain jolted up his spine, the sensation blooming sharp and electric from his lower back, making him tense and gasp involuntarily.

A sharp sting that made him let out a small, accidental yelp.

"Careful," Kaelis said smoothly. "As I mentioned earlier, I’m bigger than the average man. You’re bound to feel a little—"

"—Your Highness."

Ezra cut him off quickly, his face turning even redder.

"Hm?" Kaelis hummed, a hint of amusement in his tone.

"While I appreciate your assistance and the fact that I trust you will keep this a secret," Ezra said, his voice hoarse but firm, "I would like for us to forget about this. This... was a mistake. Caused by what happened with the cultists."

"And most likely not the last, Ezra," Kaelis replied.

Ezra frowned.

"Right now, we’ve uncovered something we cannot share with others yet. You, Ricardo, and a few I’ve personally chosen are the only ones I trust with this. What happened with the cultists... and what happened here... stays between us."

"What does that have to do with what I just said?" Ezra asked. He tried to keep his tone neutral.

Tried.

But there was only so much he could take after everything.

And Kaelis already knew how he felt about him.

No point pretending now.

"You and I will be working closely together," Kaelis said, shifting slightly, leaning closer. "You’re officially part of this investigation now, whether you like it or not."

Ezra stiffened, muscles tensing as he processed Kaelis’s words.

"The cultists are aware that you’re an omega," Kaelis continued. "Which means situations like this are likely to happen again."

Ezra froze.

"Truthfully," Kaelis added, his voice lowering slightly, "as experienced as I am, nothing has quite compared to what happened today."

"Excuse me?" Ezra’s eyes widened.

’Is he seriously saying this right now?’

"I think," Kaelis said calmly, "that we could both benefit. Especially you."

He paused.

"For future situations... it would be best if you had someone who knows how to handle it."

He stared at Kaelis.

Speechless.

’He’s... did he hit his head or something?’ Ezra thought. ’He just basically said he wants to keep doing this with me.’

What was he even supposed to say to that?

Wait—no. He could just say no.

Why wasn’t he just saying no?

"You don’t have to answer right now. It’s quite an awkward thing for me to ask as a prince," Kaelis says. "I might even regret asking you. We’ll see how things go, but it is rather amusing that our first time working together ends with... this."

"I wouldn’t call it that, but—" Ezra runs a hand through his hair. "Can we just... please, Your Highness, not talk about this anymore and focus on what we’re going to do now? About Ricardo, and everything else."

"Sure," Kaelis says. "But I should remind you that earlier, you did say I’d be the only one handling situations like that for you."

Ezra’s eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets.

"Your Highness—!" Ezra exclaims, sounding like he might actually reach for his sword.

Kaelis laughs. "Oh, I’ve been waiting for the day I’d see different expressions on your face. And to think one of them would be—"

"I’m going to leave," Ezra cuts in sharply. "I’m going to cut all your hair off and leave the kingdom."

Kaelis laughs even more, clearly entertained.

Ezra was definitely not amused.

He was horrified.

Kaelis was already unbearable on a normal day. Now that he knew this?

Absolutely not.

He was going to lose his mind.

"The ice has melted, it seems," Kaelis jokes as he begins to stand. "I’ll stop, for your sake. It looks like your face is about to explode. And I’m sure everyone’s already looking for us."

Ezra looks up at him. "Prince Kaelis... what did you tell them? We’ve been gone for hours, so..."

"Well, first of all, I told them we were attacked," Kaelis says, taking a breath. "But I didn’t mention the cultists. I said we came across Ricardo and his family, and that a group of men kidnapped the children and... killed his wife."

"Why not just tell them the truth?" Ezra asks as he begins gathering his clothes and armor. "Whoever’s behind the cultists will tell the traitor anyway."

"If we start a kingdom-wide search, even within the palace, they’ll disappear," Kaelis replies. "It already took over a decade to prove they exist. We need to play this carefully."

He glances to the side.

"There’s still a high chance someone in the palace is involved. They might try to take Ricardo again."

Kaelis had a point.

But remembering that Kaelis had used Ricardo and his family as bait made Ezra’s chest tighten.

Anger bubbled up again.

Sharp.

Uncomfortable.

"I told them you were attacked by those men," Kaelis continues. "And when I realized you were in heat... I said you were poisoned."

He looks at Ezra.

"As you know, there are poisons that don’t affect us, but can affect normal humans."

Ezra did know.

It had happened before.

When he was protecting Helios, he had been poisoned, while Helios remained unaffected because of his golden blood.

Some of the older Sunward Sentinels had suffered from the residual poison in Ezra’s body.

’He really is quick when it comes to lies,’ Ezra thought, letting out a slow breath.

"We should head back then," Ezra says. "I want to speak to Ricardo. He was close to turning into a Dark One earlier, which isn’t surprising considering he watched his wife die in front of him."

There was something in Ezra’s tone.

Something Kaelis immediately noticed.

"I didn’t mean for that to happen, Ezra."

"What did you mean to happen, Your Highness?" Ezra replies, his voice tight. "You used them as bait."

"I was desperate," Kaelis says, looking down, his brows furrowing. "You don’t understand how long I’ve been searching for them. I know no apology will ever be enough for Ricardo. Nothing in this world can replace what he lost."

He exhales slowly.

"That’s exactly why I need you. They didn’t kill his children. They took them, just like the others. And if that pattern holds... then they’re still alive."

Ezra was still angry.

He still thought Kaelis was reckless.

But Kaelis wasn’t wrong.

And that was the worst part.

There was nothing they could undo now.

So Ezra stood.

Well, tried to.

The moment he tried to straighten himself fully, he froze, held rigid by sudden discomfort.

A strange, uncomfortable sensation ran through him.

He felt a slow, slick wetness drip from behind, cool and obscene against the raw, sensitive skin at his thighs.

’Oh, my god.’

Ezra’s entire body stiffened in horror.

Kaelis noticed immediately.

"Do you need help?" he asked, a hint of amusement slipping through as he glanced at him.

That did it.

Ezra turned, furious.

"Don’t even think about it," he snapped. "Or I swear I will make sure the ground is stained gold."
