The Noble Lady's Rebirth: She just wants to Rest in Peace!-Chapter 256 - 257: Delivering a Letter
That night, Mrs. Liu Sr. received a note from Sister Ning and happily showed it to Chancellor Liu, who glanced at the words without saying much.
However, the next day, Chancellor Liu did not go out, and Mrs. Liu Sr. instructed the servants to tidy up the rooms, even preparing the courtyard where her daughter used to live.
Though it was said to be tidying, over the years it had always been maintained by servants, and now they were just dusting more meticulously than usual.
Upon hearing that someone was coming to the mansion, Sun Family quickly tidied up her belongings and headed to Mrs. Liu Sr.’s courtyard.
"It seems someone is coming to our mansion—it’s certainly a good thing. No one has visited in years; if any preparations are needed, I’ll ask the kitchen to get ready," Sun Family said, ever curious about who was marrying into the mansion.
"No need, just a young girl, she will dine here at noon," Mrs. Liu Sr. glanced at her, "You know, Sister Xian has been away from the mansion for years, but now her two children are coming to recognize relatives, and today Sister Ning is coming to the mansion. As an aunt, you should help out here in the courtyard."
Sun Family looked surprised, "Sister Xian’s children, then what about Sister Xian?"
Sun Family couldn’t help but be surprised. Years ago, when the younger sister-in-law was in the mansion, she often bullied her. Back then, she hadn’t married into the mansion yet, only having feelings for the senior master, often visiting on the pretext of her father teaching at the mansion. Sister Xian would often ask her questions she couldn’t answer, leaving her embarrassed.
Later, she eloped, and at the time, Sun Family inwardly gloated—what did it matter that she was a legitimate daughter from the Marquis Mansion? Even if she knew more, she still eloped.
Who would have thought Sister Xian’s children would return after years? Would they treat her the same way Sister Xian had?
No.
Sun Family quickly rejected this notion; now, she was the mistress of the mansion. If anyone was to be looked down upon, it would be Sister Xian’s kids by her.
A daughter raised by someone who ran off with a craftsman couldn’t possibly have seen the world.
Sun Family was secretly pleased—she hadn’t ventured outside the mansion much and didn’t know the niece found by Prime Minister Gao was actually the foster daughter of Dingyuan Marquis Mansion.
So, when she saw Sister Ning, there was nothing simple or unrefined about her demeanor.
When she heard Ning Sister conversing with Mrs. Liu Sr., she realized Ning Sister was the foster daughter of the Dingyuan Marquis.
Sun Family widened her eyes, not expecting Ning Sister to have such fortune.
Lin Youning paid no attention to Sun Family and continued to speak with her grandmother. Upon hearing the report of her grandfather’s return, she quickly stood.
After Chancellor Liu entered, he cast a glance at Ning Sister before walking directly to the armchair to sit down.
Ning Sister approached, made a formal bow to Chancellor Liu, and kowtowed.
Chancellor Liu responded with a simple "hmm," and said, "Rise."
He did not say more.
Mrs. Liu Sr. knew her husband valued face and did not engage with him, instead pulling Ning Sister to sit beside her and chat. Chancellor Liu didn’t leave and calmly sipped tea, half-listening to their conversation.
Lin Youning discreetly assessed her grandfather, noting his serious demeanor and the aura of unspoken authority.
Sun Family felt uneasy with her father-in-law’s presence, yet dared not leave until Liu Wen returned at noon. After lunch, she excused herself to deal with matters elsewhere, finally departing.
Chancellor Liu then rose, saying, "If you have matters, just send the information directly to the mansion."
He said nothing more, got up, and left.
Lin Youning indeed had things to discuss with her grandfather but could clearly see there wouldn’t be a private moment to talk. Luckily, she had prepared a letter before coming and, after staying with her grandmother for a while longer, saw the fatigue in her grandmother’s face and took her leave, handing the letter to her grandmother as she departed.
"This contains some things I’ve heard; please pass it to grandfather." Lin Youning explained while handing over the letter, "These are just rumors I’ve picked up, unknown if true." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
Mrs. Liu Sr. nodded without much inquiry, escorting her to the door and watch her board the carriage before returning inside with the help of a servant.
In the main courtyard, though Chancellor Liu had left, he returned to the room.
Mrs. Liu Sr. cleared the room of attendants and handed the letter from Sister Ning to her husband, "This is from Sister Ning, meant for you. She heard certain things and isn’t sure what they are, take a look."
Upon reading the contents, Chancellor Liu’s brows furrowed tightly.
"What did Sister Ning write?" Mrs. Liu Sr. inquired as Chancellor Liu handed her the letter.
After reading the letter, Mrs. Liu Sr.’s face turned pale with alarm, "If Sister Ning heard this, it must not be fake. Are you truly secretly communicating with Prince Xian and the Eldest Prince?"
Though Mrs. Liu Sr. usually didn’t meddle in court affairs, such matters were not beyond her understanding.
Especially knowing her husband was allied with the Crown Prince, news of connections with the Eldest Prince posed troubling questions.
Chancellor Liu replied dismissively, "Just rumors—do you really believe them?"
Mrs. Liu Sr. glanced at her husband, "I understand you always have things figured out. I’m merely a woman of the house and should not comment excessively. Just remember to be cautious. Though the Eldest Prince is favored by the Emperor, there’s never been talk of dethroning the Crown Prince, which shows the Emperor’s steady support for him. Having been the Crown Prince’s tutor, you are seen by everyone, including the Emperor, as an ally of the Crown Prince, likely expecting you to assist him."
"I have it under control; no need to worry." Chancellor Liu stood, "I’ll have someone investigate what’s happening."
Though Chancellor Liu’s demeanor remained unchanged, internally was turmoil. Having used codes when communicating with Prince Xian and the Eldest Prince, discovery suggested suspicion by the Crown Prince or the Emperor.
Chancellor Liu returned to his study, summoned a trusted aide, whispered instructions, and the aide nodded seriously, leaving the study.
