The Mute Wife Who Brings Prosperity-Chapter 445 - 413: Jinbao Holds Grudges
Wen Wan turned around and entered the room, Lin Xiaoyue was still awake.
Ever since she watched that child leave her body in the wake of a miscarriage, she hasn’t felt sleepy at all.
Seeing Wen Wan come in, Lin Xiaoyue asked, "Did Mr. Song leave?"
Wen Wan raised an eyebrow, "How do you know he left and not stayed overnight at your home?"
"If he were willing to stay, he wouldn’t be the Song Wei I know."
Lin Xiaoyue gestured with her eyes for Wen Wan to sit as she spoke.
Wen Wan, who stayed specifically to accompany Lin Xiaoyue, didn’t refuse. She moved the chair a bit closer, sat by the bedside to talk to her, "Does it still hurt?"
"What can you do about the pain? You just have to endure it."
Wen Wan noticed the melancholy in her eyes, "The servants say you’ve been awake since the child was delivered and haven’t slept; aren’t you tired?"
"I can’t sleep." Lin Xiaoyue shook her head, every time she closed her eyes, she would see the child just leaving her body, her heart feeling painfully blocked.
"Why clutter your mind with so much?" Wen Wan said, "The more you think, the easier it is for things to go wrong."
Lin Xiaoyue sighed softly, "I haven’t thought about anything else, just worried that when he returns, he’ll blame me for not being fit to be a mother when he learns our son is gone."
Wen Wan looked at the little woman before her, who had lost her usual spirit, feeling the huge blow this miscarriage had brought her. Trying not to provoke her further, she comforted her as best as she could, "This miscarriage was an accident; even the doctor couldn’t diagnose any issue with the child, how could it be blamed on you? Besides, as long as he returns safe, you two can have as many children as you want."
Knowing Wen Wan was comforting her, Lin Xiaoyue opened her eyes to glance at her, making no sound.
Soon, she blinked heavily and fell asleep.
Wen Wan quietly stood up, moved the brazier closer to ensure Lin Xiaoyue wouldn’t catch cold.
When she walked out of the main house, the snow outside had already stopped. The blue-grey tiles were covered with a thick layer.
The servants had all gone back inside to rest, leaving the courtyard unusually quiet at this moment.
Wen Wan breathed out a puff of white mist and rubbed her hands together, gathering her cloak around herself. Suddenly, she had the urge to build a snowman and stepped slowly down the stone steps.
...
When Lin Xiaoyue awakened again, it was already bright daylight. She heard the giggling of a little girl outside.
Seeing the maid Jin Huan beside her, Lin Xiaoyue asked, "What’s happened?"
Jin Huan replied, "Madam, you might not know, Mrs. Song built a snowman. Miss saw it in the morning and liked it so much she insists Mrs. Song teach her."
Lin Xiaoyue curved the corners of her lips, then thought of something, "Did Wen Wan not sleep the whole night?"
Jin Huan hesitated and nodded, "It seems so."
"What do you mean by ’seems so’?" Detecting the perfunctory tone in her maid’s voice, Lin Xiaoyue’s expression turned unpleasant, "Did you all abandon her to sleep by herself last night?"
Jin Huan immediately knelt on the ground, "Madam, please forgive us. It was Mrs. Song who told the servants to rest."
"And you listened just because she told you?"
Having faced her mistress’s fury right upon waking, the young maid didn’t know how to handle it and was on the verge of tears.
At this time, Wen Wan entered the room holding Ah Nuan’s little hand.
Upon reaching the inner room and seeing Jin Huan kneeling on the ground, Wen Wan asked, "What’s going on here?"
Lin Xiaoyue looked at her, "The servants don’t follow the rules and treated you poorly. Why do you still mind your manners with me? If you’re tired, just find a room to sleep in. At least there’s a small couch outside. Visiting me and staying up till daybreak—that, if spread around, would have people calling me heartless."
Wen Wan suddenly laughed, "The fact that you care about others’ opinions shows there’s hope yet."
Lin Xiaoyue was once again on the brink of being speechless by her, "This skill of yours should have been learned from your man."
Wen Wan didn’t deny, "He is my husband, who else would I learn from if not him?"
Ah Nuan, upon seeing her mother, joyfully shouted and ran toward her.
Wen Wan worried that she would bump into Lin Xiaoyue and promptly reached out to grab her little arm, pulling her back gently, whispering, "Your mother doesn’t feel well today; you can’t disturb her."
The little girl no longer moved forward, her eyes filled with questions as she looked at Lin Xiaoyue, seeming to seek an answer.
Lin Xiaoyue smiled softly, "Did Ah Nuan have fun building a snowman outside?"
"It was fun~"
At this age, the child’s sweet voice could always melt people’s ears.
Lin Xiaoyue’s gaze softened, "Then later, why don’t you go with Aunt Wan and let her teach you to build other things?"
"What about mother?" the little girl asked.
"Mother is a bit tired and will sleep a while longer. When I wake up, I’ll come fetch Ah Nuan."
Knowing not to disturb her mother’s sleep, the little girl agreed to go with Wen Wan.
In a rare moment without mishap, Lin Xiaoyue breathed a sigh of relief, gesturing with her eyes for Wen Wan to quickly take her away from the Governor Mansion.
Wen Wan took advantage of Ah Nuan before she could change her mind, holding her hand as they walked outside. Then she picked her up, carrying her all the way to the main gate where they boarded the carriage.
Not seeing her mother follow, Ah Nuan felt a bit uneasy. Her little bottom wriggled on the soft padded seat, wanting to get down.
Wen Wan patiently said to her, "We have a little brother at home who’s great at building snowmen. Do you want to go compete with him?"
Hearing this, Ah Nuan stopped her restless movements and looked up at Wen Wan.
Even though she knew the little girl surely didn’t remember Jinbao, Wen Wan still said, "Last time we went to the temple, you saw him."
Ah Nuan shook her head; she had long forgotten about the impressive little brother who could walk down the mountain on foot. However, she didn’t resist going to the Song family.
Wen Wan thought, Ah Nuan was probably curious about the "little brother" she mentioned.
After the carriage departed, Wen Wan worried she might get noisy and kept talking to her, "Our little brother is quite mischievous, but he’s got a stash of tasty treats. If you come, he will definitely share them with you."
Ah Nuan suddenly asked, "Are there candies?"
"Yes, there are."
——
When Wen Wan returned home, Jinbao, who loved playing in the snow, had already built a large snowman with Grandpa’s help. He was tiptoeing to place eyes on the head.
Catching a glimpse of his mother bringing a pretty pink-colored sister home, his heels dropped suddenly, and he fell to the ground, getting covered with snowflakes.
Wen Wan hurried over and bent down to help him.
The little guy refused her assistance, scrambling up on his own, fearing someone might laugh at him. He stretched out his chubby hands, brushing off the snow persistently, unable to reach his back due to short arms.
The little guy was so worried his face turned red.
Wen Wan circled around to her son’s back, easily cleaning him up, asking with a smile, "Where’s your dad?"
"Dad went to the Hanlin Academy."
Wen Wan glanced at the snowman, "Who helped you build this?"
"Grandpa."
"Where’s Grandpa?"
"Inside."
Wen Wan looked toward the main house, just in time to see her father-in-law coming out.
She stepped forward, calling out, "Dad."
Old Song had heard from Song Wei earlier that Madam Su had a miscarriage, and the couple hurried over overnight to visit. Seeing his daughter-in-law appearing sleepless, he thought it inappropriate to urge her to rest, so he simply replied, "Back home?"
Wen Wan nodded, thinking of asking Ah Nuan to call Grandpa, but then heard her father-in-law’s voice, "It’s cold outside; there’s a brazier burning inside. Take the child in to warm up."
"Thank you, Dad."
Song Wei left early in the morning. Wen Wan figured her father-in-law had been over for quite some time, "Dad, if you have things to do, please go ahead. I will look after Jinbao here."
Old Song murmured a response and didn’t argue further, walking over to pat Jinbao’s little head and then striding outside.
Jinbao waved his chubby hand, "Bye, Grandpa~"
After calling out, noticing no reaction beside him, his round eyes looked at Ah Nuan with a bit of self-righteousness, "You haven’t said goodbye to Grandpa yet."
Ah Nuan looked at Jinbao and then at Old Song’s back, pursing her little lips without saying anything.
Jinbao snorted, using his eyes to protest to his mother about his sister’s disobedient and rude behavior.
Wen Wan tugged at his collar, "Enough, stop fussing. Hurry inside to change clothes. Playing in the snow this early, aren’t you afraid of freezing?"
The little guy sniffed and dashed into the house, asking Yun Cai to change his clothes to new ones, the latest and most beautiful.
A quarter of an hour later, Wen Wan saw her son in new clothes, "...It’s not even New Year; what are you doing?"
Jinbao touched his nose, "Can’t wear new clothes if it’s not New Year?"
Wen Wan said he could, "If you’re happy to keep wearing this set during the New Year."
The little guy wanted to protest, but upon seeing his sister still there, he closed his mouth tightly, only muttering a few things that nobody heard clearly.
"Ah Nuan, come and sit here."
Wen Wan pulled the little girl over to the brazier, bringing a lower stool for her.
Once the little girl sat down, Wen Wan looked at her son, "Quickly bring out your snacks to share with your sister."
The little guy refused.
While Ah Nuan didn’t remember him, he remembered her, "Last time, Jinbao asked her for sugar-coated haws but she didn’t give. Jinbao’s good stuff cannot be shared with her."
Wen Wan: "...As a little gentleman, can’t you have a bit of grace?"
"No, just no!" The little guy had quite a grudge.
