Chapter 176: Family Secrets

Tony returned from Blockhouse 1004 unhurt but was shaken. His eyes were haunted, and he had a folder clutched in his hand.

I ran to him. "What happened? I heard gunshots over the wire!"

"It was a sniper, and there were also multiple shooters. He missed me by inches. Dante Marvin is my cousin or an uncle, whichever one... he’s real."

I was staring at him, trying to process what he just spilled out. "Your cousin?"

He nodded and sat heavily, opening the folder.

"Edward Marvin. He was my grandfather’s younger brother, and he faked his own death in 1985. He started his own criminal empire in Europe. And his son, Dante, is coming for revenge."

"This can’t be real. Your father is manipulating you-"

"The sniper was real, Katherine. The bullets were real, and this-" He showed me the folder. "This is proof."

The photos spilled out, revealing a man in his 40s with cold green eyes and sharp features.

The family resemblance was unmistakable. He had the Marvin bone structure and almost the same jaw as Tony.

But his was harder, colder, and he looked so much more dangerous.

The pictures showed him in different European locations, either on a luxury yacht or a private jet, or at a villa in Tuscany.

The document evidence had criminal empire written all over it.

His financials involved shell companies, laundering, global operations, and intelligence reports: CIA, Interpol, Europol.

Dante Marvin, also known as Dante Conti, was linked to organized crime across Europe.

His birth certificate listed Edward Marvin as the father and his mother as Gabriella Conti, who was from an Italian crime family.

"He’s real," I whispered. I couldn’t quite believe it. "Your cousin is real."

"And he wants revenge. For being cut out of the family business, for being forgotten, for his father Edward being erased from Marvin history, and for not inheriting the empire he believes is his birthright."

Timothy reviewed the evidence via video conference.

His face was calm, but he seemed surprised.

"This is legitimate. Dante Marvin does exist. We’ve had files on him for years, but never connected him to your family."

"Why not?" Tony demanded.

"He operates under aliases. Primarily ’Dante Conti’ after his mother’s family. Edward Marvin faked his death in 1985 in a car bomb that was made very public. We thought the Marvin-Edward connection was permanently severed, but we were wrong."

"What do we know about him?"

Timothy pulled up some files and read. "Born in 1984 in Milan. Raised primarily in Italy by his mother’s family after Edward’s ’death.’ Educated at elite Swiss boarding schools and speaks six languages fluently. He runs criminal operations across Europe - drugs, weapons, human trafficking, extortion. His dealings are brutal, efficient, and patient."

"Sounds familiar," I muttered, understanding the Marvin family traits.

"He’s been building his empire for twenty years. Quietly and carefully, and has been under the radar... until now."

Late at night, I couldn’t sleep with Rose in her crib beside me, I was researching, my laptop glowing in the dark as I was digging deeper - finding articles, news reports, European press coverage, and translating Italian, French, and German sources.

Dante Marvin rarely appeared; he worked carefully and operated publicly as Dante Conti.

He was a legitimate businessman on the surface, owning hotels, real estate, and import-export businesses.

But the criminal intelligence reports painted a different picture.

Edward’s son and Tony’s cousin. First cousin, technically.

Had been building an empire in Europe while Tony built one and dismantled one in America, trying to go the legitimate way.

Two branches of the same poisonous tree.

Rose stirred, babbling in her sleep, then she settled.

I watched her. She was just a one-year-old - innocent, happy, and oblivious.

"She doesn’t know and doesn’t understand that there’s another threat and another enemy wanting to hurt her."

Tony appeared in the doorway.

"We keep her innocent and protected. Like always." He said.

"For how long? How many enemies do we fight before it ends? Is it Morrison, Davidson, Victoria, Charles, The Twelve, Hassan, Juliet, and now Dante. Just how many?"

"As many as it takes."

"That’s not an answer."

"It’s the only answer I have." He said solemly.

My phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number.

I opened it, my blood running cold.

Hello, cousin-in-law. Anthony doesn’t remember me; we met once. When we were children, though I was much older than he was, Thomas cast my father out. My father was his uncle, his dad’s much younger brother. He felt he owned everything because his father was the firstborn, the heir to the Marvin empire. Now I’m taking what should have been ours. The Marvin empire. The Marvin legacy, and I’ll destroy anyone who stands in my way. Including you and your daughter. Sleep well, Katherine. -D

A photo was attached, and I opened it, gasping.

It was of Rose playing in the estate garden this afternoon when she was laughing and reaching for a butterfly.

It had been taken through a telephoto lens.

"He’s watching us!" I screamed. "He photographed Rose today! He was watching her!"

Luca investigated immediately, mobilizing the security team.

"How did he get close enough to photograph her?"

We had a tight perimeter with advanced surveillance and strict protocols.

Luca examined the photo metadata. "He didn’t get close. This was taken from the mountain ridge, two miles out. This is a military-grade telephoto equipment, probably drone-assisted."

"So he’s been watching us."

"Just like Juliet," Tony said grimly. "Like all of them."

I was breaking. I couldn’t hold it together. "This never ends!"

The stress from all this was fracturing everything. Cracks appeared daily and I could feel us breaking under the weight.

Tony and I were arguing. This was not about us; it was about our current circumstances, but it felt personal.

"This is your family’s legacy, your grandfather’s brother! Your father’s secrets he never told you about!"

"I didn’t know! I swear to God, I didn’t know Edward existed!"

"It doesn’t matter. Rose is in danger again because of Marvin’s blood and because your grandfather had a brother who faked his death and started a criminal dynasty!"

"What do you want me to do? Change the past and rewrite history?"

"I want this to end! I want our daughter safe, and I want a normal fucking life!"

"So do I, but we don’t get that choice! We never did!"

We were both exhausted, scared, and helpless.

Rose woke and started crying too, sensing the tension and fear.

We stopped, both of us going to comfort her.

"I’m sorry," I whispered. "I’m just so scared."

"Me too."

I had an emergency therapy session with Dr. Nina Cole via video call, and I was alone.

"I can’t keep doing this. I can’t keep fighting and living in constant fear for my daughter’s life."

"What do you want to do, Katherine?"

"Run, disappear, take Rose somewhere far away with a new identity and start completely over."

"Would that work?"

I paused for a long time. "No, they’d find us. They always find us, and Dante has resources with international reach. We can’t hide from this."

"So what’s the alternative?"

"Face it, fight it, and end it permanently. But Dr. Cole, I’m so tired of fighting. So tired."

"You’re exhausted, traumatized, and running on empty. But Katherine, you’re still here, still protecting Rose. You’re still fighting; that takes incredible strength." 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"It doesn’t feel like strength. It feels like survival and being desperate. Just barely holding on."

Marvin Ventures was suffering, and the business was crumbling under the strain.

I was distracted, missing meetings and making poor decisions. The investors were beginning to notice.

A client called to ask. "Is everything okay with the Marvin partnership? We’ve noticed some... inconsistencies."

"Just personal issues, but we’re handling it."

We had some clients pulling out and some deals falling through. This was a first major business setback.

Tony suggested. "We can pause operations and focus entirely on security-"

"No, we keep building," I said firmly. "We don’t let Dante destroy what we’ve created. The business is all we have that’s not tainted by Marvin’s criminal legacy. I won’t give that up."

Elliot visited and immediately noticed my state.

"You’re not sleeping and not eating properly. This is extremely unhealthy."

"There’s another threat, Elliot. It’s another enemy, and he’s Tony’s cousin, who is targeting Rose and has been photographing her and threatening us."

"I know. Tony told me everything, but Katherine - you survived Victoria, Charles Sterling, and others. You’ll survive this, too."

"Will I or will this be the one that finally breaks me? Everyone has a breaking point."

"You’re stronger than you think, and you’re not alone. You have Tony, me, and our family. We’re all fighting this together."

He hugged me, which was rare for Elliot, as physical affection doesn’t come naturally to him.

But he was trying and supporting, being the brother I raised him to be.

That night, Rose was finally asleep after hours of fussing.

Tony and I were in bed, feeling exhausted and stressed out.

"I’m sorry," I whispered. "For blaming you. Your family history is your fault, none of this is."

"You’re not wrong, though. This is Marvin’s legacy; it’s a Marvin curse. The generations of violence and crime are coming back to haunt us."

"But you’re not your grandfather or your father, and you’re definitely not Edward. You’re Tony, the man who chose me, who loves Rose, and who’s building something better."

"Sometimes I wonder if any of us can truly escape it. The Marvin blood and the legacy. Maybe it’s inevitable."

We made love quietly and carefully, Rose sleeping in her crib nearby, reconnecting, apologizing, and forgiving.

This was not desperate but needed. An affirmation that we’re still us and still together.

"We survive this," Tony whispered. "Together, just like everything else we’ve faced."

"Yes, together."

By morning, the news alert on my phone woke me up.

BREAKING: Explosion at Marvin Industries Headquarters - Building Damaged and casualties Reported.

My heart stopped.

"Tony! TONY!"

He was already up, seeing the same alert, and called Bella.

There was no answer, and it went straight to voicemail.

Then my phone rang, and it was from Bella. She was panicked and crying over the phone.

"Katherine, the building... there was an explosion-"

"Are you okay? Are you hurt?"

"I’m okay. I was running late to the office because of the traffic. But-" Her voice was breaking as she was crying. "Fifteen people dead and thirty injured. David was inside his office, and I couldn’t find him. I can’t-"

I felt ice run through my blood.

David, Bella’s boyfriend, was inside during the explosion.

"We’re coming right now. Hold on, Bella. We’re coming."

Tony’s received a text message on his phone from an unknown number.

He opened it, and his face went pale as he showed me.

That was a warning. Next time, I won’t miss. Give me what I want, or everyone you love dies. You have 48 hours. -D

Dante Marvin.

He just killed fifteen people and injured thirty more. David was missing or dead.

This was a warning.

And we have 48 hours to give him what he wants.

Whatever that is.
