Chapter 273: 273. She’s Going to Feel Lonely with a Sense of Longing From Now On (Poor Her)

The rain had stopped a while before dawn, and the morning that followed was reminiscent of those that come after heavy rainfall: it felt cleaner, cooler, and carried the fresh scent of stone that had been washed and was now drying in the light.

Before Rex knew anything else, he could see the aftermath of the rain from the guest room window. The Foresight had been active throughout the night, tracking the weather even as he slept and woke.

He sat up and ran a quick internal inventory.

The inventory was satisfactory across all categories. The integration of Elemental Mastery had been stabilizing throughout the night, which the acquisition notes indicated was a typical aspect of layered skills.

In practice, it made him feel as though he woke up with a larger vocabulary than he had when he went to sleep. It was a familiar sensation of expanded access, yet without the disorientation typically associated with learning something new.

He could feel the rain that had fallen in the eastern streets’ drainage. He could tell that the stone on the lower floors was colder than the wood on the upper floors.

He could barely feel the specific geological signature that the Earthen Authority read as the foundation material of the Nightwing household, which was about four blocks away from where he was now.

He took note of everything and got dressed while thinking about last night’s encounter with Amelia.

"Not going to lie... last night, teasing a fucking priestess was the most fun I had," Rex laughed. "Her reaction was priceless, and she’s almost the same as his son when it comes to making decisions."

"I tease her hard enough that I think she’s probably going to sense longing for me, and I’ll let her get even more frustrated until she’s the one to ask me to do it again."

"Priestess or not... devotion to the Goddess of Life or not... I’m simply irresistible," Rex declared with pride.

...

When he opened the door to the guest room, the hallway was quiet. Apollo’s room was still closed, just like it had been the night before.

At the end of the hallway, where Amelia’s room was, there were sounds coming from someone who was waking up but hadn’t yet decided to be awake.

"It seems her husband is back, but I know she already cleaned up after that massive release from me."

Rex went down the stairs.

The Brightsoul family’s kitchen was designed for daily use, making it convenient for anyone who needed to prepare breakfast. He easily located the kettle and tea.

This efficiency was thanks to the Earthen Authority’s substrate mapping, a divine skill applied in interior spaces, which he appreciated more with each use.

"I’ve noticed that the power I received from the Earthen Apostle is heightening my sensitivity to my surroundings."

"Maybe I should start thinking about what new villain identity I should have come up with to create some chaos."

He was on his second cup when he heard footsteps on the stairs.

’Ah... there she is... the priestess who’s probably still feeling all frustrated, and I know that she’s going to act like everything is alright.’ Rex thought. ’Well, I do in fact love it when a woman tries to hide it...’

’Makes them so hopeless.’

Amelia walked into the kitchen with an air of slight embarrassment, as if she had not expected to find anyone else there and was adjusting her demeanor accordingly. She had clearly been awake for at least twenty minutes, evidenced by her styled hair and the clothes she wore, which signaled that she had a busy day ahead of her.

Her husband followed closely behind her, adjusting the outer layer of his temple robes in a manner that indicated he had performed this routine every morning for many years.

Amelia remarked, "You’re up early," her voice steady, indicating she had already resolved how the morning would unfold after last night’s encounter.

"Habit," Rex said. "The kettle is already hot if you want to make tea or coffee."

"Thank you," she said, and those two words had the morning’s special tone, the one that recognized more than just the kettle.

Rex, for once, acted like a gentleman by pouring hot water into two cups of coffee. He handed the cups to them and noticed that Amelia was trying to avoid making eye contact with him.

’Oh yeah... look at her...’ Rex noticed that her hands were positioned uncomfortably close to her crotch, as if she were trying to conceal something.

Her husband took the cup with a hurried thanks, and the three of them spent about fifteen minutes in the kitchen, conversing comfortably as if they didn’t need to prove anything to one another in the early morning.

Then her husband’s temple duties called him to the door, and the atmosphere in the kitchen shifted from that of three people to that of two.

"Apollo." Rex said, "Should I try again before I go?"

Amelia stared at him. "I heard him moving around before I came down."

"He was awake early this morning," she said, her concern evident.

"I could tell him you’re still here."

Rex thought about this. "Tell him I’ll be back when he’s ready to make sure that I don’t need to rush him."

She looked at him with a gaze that had been evolving throughout the night, one that had gone through several stages and was now calmer and more settled than any of the others.

It was as if she had finally found the clarity she needed, easing the tension that had existed between them. She leaned in closer, a soft smile crossing her lips, ready to bridge the gap that had kept them apart for far too long.

Rex noticed what she was about to do, but she managed to maintain the distance between them. "D-don’t worry..."

She continued, "I’ll tell him."

Rex set down his cup and stood up, appearing as if he had completed what he needed to do and was prepared to move on to the next task.

"Alright, I think I’ll take my leave now," Rex said, stretching both arms so Amelia could clearly see his muscles flex. "It’s best to let Apollo come out on his own and not force anything upon him."

"Y-You’re really leaving already...?" she asked, her tone revealing the longing Rex had hoped to inspire.

"Yeah, I’m busy today." Rex tries not to tease or seduce her today just to make her situation even worse, as he knows that leaving her with such feelings of longing will only add to her emotional turmoil. "I probably won’t come here for a while."

Amelia’s heart sank when he said that. She felt both disappointed and confused.

’N-No... I thought he’s going to stay a bit longer so that... we... we can...’

"But what if I need you?" she unintentionally whispered, her voice barely audible as it reached him.

"What was that?" Rex asked, even though he heard her clear.

"Uh, I mean... what if Apollo needs you?"

"Then just come to the Silver Rest inn, and if I’m not there... some of the innkeepers will probably tell me about it so that I can come back here."

"O-Okay..."

She then guided him toward the door leading outside.

He slowly walked back to the kitchen when Amelia said, "If the muscle soreness comes back," her tone making it clear she meant something more than her words suggested. "You know where to find me."

Rex turned around and looked at her.

"I do," he said.

She smiled in a way that suggested she was concealing something, her gaze unwavering. The morning light streaming through the kitchen window continued to cast a cheerful glow.

just as it had all morning.

Rex went outside in the morning.

’Heh... so close.’

’Well, I’ll save it for my next encounter, but today...’

’I need to at least get one of those Nightwings for some new experience.’
