Chapter 79: A Job Well Done

It was over in what felt like a few seconds. In truth, the battle took five minutes to reach its conclusion.

Adal stood on the stage watching as the royal guard and the family that they were supposed to be protecting lay there, dead in pools of blood. Their bodies were scattered around the rows of seats, as if they were still spectators in the crowd.

Standing over them were figures in black, whose facial features were shrouded by their robes and dark shadows, so that the city would never know who brought such tragedy onto their people.

Only Adal knew that it was the sun elves.

As he stood on the stage watching, he noticed one of the figures approaching from the corner of his eye. The figure drew a knife and prepared to strike, but his actions was cut off by a feminine shout.

"Stop! He’s with us."

The voice belonged to a smaller figure, who was crouched by the king’s body, looting his corpse of its rich jewellery.

Adal knew who it was immediately. Nimrodel Nevernight, the petite woman he had met before.

Her words stopped the attacker in his tracks. He looked Adal up and down.

"So, it was him? He’s the one who killed Musa Desertsword, and set this all up for us."

Adal smiled and nodded his head. It was difficult to remain calm amidst the chaos.

"Yes, it was." He answered.

Grunts of approval spread throughout the dark figures, and they nodded their heads towards him.

"Then you have our thanks."

Just like that, Adal had established himself amongst the sun elves as an ally, all whilst his true allies, the humans, lay dead beneath him.

He almost laughed at the prospect of it, but thought that it might make him seem too evil, when in truth, he did not find their deaths humorous. He understood the implications of what would follow afterwards very well.

"Librarian, what will you do with yourself after this?"

Nimrodel had made her way over to Adal and studied him carefully through the shadow that shrouded her face. Adal couldn’t make out anything about the woman, her system revealed to him that it was her.

"What do you mean? I will continue to run my libraries as I have before, both in Fairwhite City and Antarctica City."

"You think you will be able to do this even after the death of your king? Stuff’s gonna change, you know?"

"I am aware, but my life will remain the same. I am a Librarian at heart, and sometimes a writer. I will continue to spread the world of literature to the public, and sometimes contribute myself. This will remain the same regardless of who is in control of our city."

The sun elf tilted her head to the side and looked at him for a few seconds. Then, she shrugged her shoulders. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

"You are an interesting man, librarian." She said eventually, before finally exiting the theatre with her assassins, by vanishing into thin air.

Adal was left standing alone, with no one but Princess Iris. The woman had a look of relief painted on her pale face, despite having witnessed the death of her husband only moments earlier.

She brushed a strand of white hair out of her face and let out a deep sigh as she looked at the bodies around her.

"Freedom at last." She said.

Adal looked at the woman from across the space, and their eyes soon met.

"I did not expect this to work, Adal. My father will be... pleased. Though we must leave fast, before we are suspected. Come, I can get us out of here without being seen."

Adal hesitantly made his way over to the woman and she took his hand in hers.

Afterwards, she closed her eyes, and he suddenly felt his body becoming light. So light that he seemed to be entering some sort of dream space.

His vision darkened, like he was falling into a deep sleep, and when it returned to normal, he found that he was no longer standing in the theatre, and was now in his bedroom, in front of the Outer Realm Gate.

Back at my library...

He could hear business going on as usual downstairs, as well as the sounds of Penelope and Juliette’s voices as they managed things.

It was good to hear that they were safe.

They had no idea what was happening on the other side of the city.

"I brought us here because I knew of your Outer Realm Gate that could take us back to Antarctica." Princess Iris urged him towards it. "Come, let’s hurry."

~~~
It took no time for the duo to arrive at the Palace of Iglantis. Seeing the Princess return, they were both guided by guards to the throne room where King Elios awaited them.
The old man sat on his throne, surrounded by an entourage of fierce knights and timid maids and butlers.
It was the first time Adal had seen him in a long time. After all, he was not allowed to show his face to the man until his task was complete.
Now, it was.
"Hm, Adal Alexandrus. I trust that your task has been completed if you are here in the throne room?"
Adal nodded his head, but remained standing, whilst the princess was kneeling.
"Yes, your highness. The royal family has been dealt with, and your daughter witnessed it herself."
The man looked at his daughter with one of his white brows raised.
"What he says is true, Father. I watched them fall with my own eyes, at the hands of the sun elves. The elves recognised Adal as the mastermind behind it all. The leader of the assassins even showed him a great amount of respect."
Now, an impressed look spread across the king’s wrinkled face. He looked back at the librarian, pleased.
"I underestimated you yet again, librarian. You have proved yourself to be formidable in many areas. You are a man whom I have no shame in allowing my daughter to marry. Whichever you want is yours!"
Princess Iris’s eyes went wide and her cheeks blushed.
"F-father, was the deal not for the librarian to be married to my sister, Opal?"
King Elios waved a hand dismissively.
"Oh, please. The man has gotten rid of our biggest enemies. He could have your auntie too, for all I care. What is important now, is what we will do next."
Those who stood in the throne room suddenly stood to greater attention. The next words spoken by the king would reveal the plans that would affect the future of their entire realm.
King Elios scratched his stubble, thinking before talking.
"There will be a battle for the throne. People will rise up and try to take the Torn Kingdom for themselves, but it is we who must take it, for we are the only remaining human kingdom. Whoever shall try to snatch it from us will meet our swords, and whoever shall help us claim it will be our allies."
Adal knew who the man was speaking of. The surrounding races would most certainly try to claim the new land, so it was important for the Iglantians to establish themselves as soon as possible.
Right in front of his face, Adal watched as the man summoned his greatest generals, and ordered them around. He told them where he wanted them to station themselves in preparation for what might come next. Then, he summoned his council, and that was when Adal was finally ordered to leave the throne room, due to confidentiality reasons.
As he stood outside of the palace, he thought on everything that had happened to him in the past twenty-four hours.
Not only had he committed betrayal and treason, but he had also overthrown an entire kingdom.
All for what? The sake of love?
He laughed into the cold air, as the sounds of scurrying footsteps hurried behind him.
"Adal, you did it!"
A feminine voice cried out as he felt someone leap onto his back, and press their breasts against him.
Adal knew immediately who it was from her sweat scent, and her white hair. He spun the woman around effortlessly so that she was facing him, and looked her deep into her pink eyes.
"Should a princess be greeting a mere Librarian like this in public?"
"A librarian? Pfft, don’t be silly. You might as well be the Prince at this point. You’ve done more for the realm than any of your brothers had after all."
Then, without saying another word, she pulled Adal into a deep kiss, exploring his mouth with her tongue. His hands naturally landed on the soft flesh of her ass and groped at it through her royal dress.
In the distance, he saw a guard blush as he watched a royal woman be fondled, but he could do nothing about it.
They all heard the words of the king after all.
Adal had done the realm a great justice, and now had the right to marry any daughter that he chose.
That might have just made him one of the most powerful men in the kingdom.
