Chapter 76: Meeting the Chief [1]

"What’s wrong, Subaru?" Why was he looking at us like we killed his entire family and pissed on their graves?

"In the mortal form, I require sleep." He said with darkned face. When I looked at his eyes, they were swollen from the dark circles around them.

"You do... A lot happened, I don’t blame you for not being able to sleep. Don’t worry, it will help you sleep better at night. For now, let’s get you a strong coffee."

Subaru seemed extremely baffled. Disturbed even.

"The weather is really nice today," Alya said while pointing at the cloud-covered sun, her face was bright red as she glanced at me.

We were in the backyard again. Right after eating in the cafeteria. Today, they made meatballs, very crispy, with gooey stuff inside them. It was just the best.

I reluctantly even drank some beer. Reluctantly, because it would be irresponsible to meet the literal king of such a massive and strong empire drunk.

The meatballs tasted even better with it, so had no choice. Freedom, I suppose. It was just heavenly.

I tried to lift the long sword again. It levitated with ease. Got to my head’s height.

I twisted my raised hand sideways. It swiftly turned straight like a rocket. As I moved my hand, the gravity moved, giving a very good hold over the long sword.

"Lucii, Why don’t you use a wider surface? Will give you so much more room to breathe and maybe could even carry two or three people at once!" Alya said with a curious look.

"It won’t look cool." I deadpanned.

"..."

"F–Fair." She nodded slowly, her gaze dumbfounded.

"Hm... You can even shoot it." Subaru murmured as I controlled the sword better than one could their finger. Now it did feel like I had perfect control over gravity.

"Of course! I am thinking of entering fights while flying on my sword and stabbing the enemy before even starting the fight." 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

After chatting for a few more minutes and chilling, I finally tried balancing myself on it. Almost fell three times, but with the movement of my hand, I could fly!

With a deep breath and a determined face, I brought all my focus to the gravity I controlled and pushed myself higher. Then even higher.

Alya and Subaru grew smaller and smaller, their faces worried. At this height, I would easily break all my bones. It would take a few minutes for even me to recover from that.

I tried not to think about it.

Air thinned. The view below me was mesmerizing. Thousands of houses, so small. Thick clouds floated beside me. The cold made my body shiver harder than ever.

The sword, even though the thickest I could find, was still only enough for half my feet. It was incredibly hard to stay cool as I moved forward.

Alya might have been right. I thought that, and shook my head.

My lips curled upwards as I jerked my hand fully forward.

SWOOSHH!

Clouds spread away at my sheer speed, my wide grin was now showing all my teeth, as my lips were comically turning back due to the speed.

I was still at half the length of the towering mountain. It kind of made me wanna reach the peak of it, but I was not stupid enough for that.

Who knew how high that thing went and what kind of monsters were roaming in the sky at that height?

I didn’t know anything about this world’s geography, andthere is no way I would believe that this world wouldn’t have flying dragons roaming at that height after seeing those titans.

I flew down after taking in beautiful sights and flying a little bit more. Suge had arrived.

He wore a white robe over his towering frame, covering all his muscles. He had a thick necklace chain around his neck, which was thicker than the chain Mari Swan locked me.

A skull, much bigger than a human’s skull but still human structure hanged from it.

"Hope you three had a good night." Suge smiled. He had come to the backyard directly.

"We did!" I said, walking up to him while the sword fell to the ground with a loud clank.

"They did," Subaru repeated with a grim face. Alya’s face reddened as me and Suge shot him a confused glance.

Why did he sounded so pissed? That’s why you gotta sleep properly I suppose.

"Good to know. Are you ready? Master Von had been waiting for you. He’s also very curious about you, Subaru. After the sword you shared with Lord Suneater."

Subaru gave a simple nod to that information.

"Anyways, did you talk about the veils of ascension for us three to the higher ups?" I asked, my voice, even though toned down to the limit, revealed some excitement.

"I did." He said. Then, let the silence rest for a good minute before adding, "They approve! I will arrange it by afternoon."

LET’S GOOOOOOO!!!

I was practically screaming in my mind. Using magic was a dream. Right beside super strength and Vampireussy.

"Nice," I said calmly in approval, barely holding back the urge to burst into laughter.

After chatting for a few more seconds, we followed behind him.

Now, besides Subaru, who was still in his plain black Kimono, just washed, Alya and me had changed our clothes.

I wore a plain black shirt, buttoned nicely around my fit body, revealing muscles like a compressed T-Shirt. Matched with plain white, baggy trousers and black leather shoes.

I patted my breast pocket, thinking back to another mission I had. The ring Kael gave me rested peacefully there. Valentine City. Maybe, Laso could teleport us there directly.

Alya had worn a plain black gown, with a matching black witch hat and black heels. The hat over her small face looked incredibly cute.

We walked through the stone streets with brick footpaths. Carriages pulled by rather big horse like creatures roamed all across the way. Made me think why didn’t we take a carriage, but I guess Suge wanted us to look around.

It was forty minutes walk. Subaru was the only one who looked tired. But he seemed more ashamed than tired. He had asked us to take a break.

Of course, we did that and bought him some sweet, cold lemonade with barbecue. But this had hurt his pride a lot. Gotta get this dude his powers back, he clearly missed them more than he missed his world.

"We are here," Suge announced as we stopped in front of a stairway made completely of stones, as if made by breaking the stone and digging through the mountains.

We passed through the shrine gate to begin our climb. The steps were really big, like, reached my knees. And, I was really fucking tall.

Subaru’s face was completely red as he used his hands to support his climb. We pretended not to look to give him some space.

They had stone pathways for every part of the town we walked, but not the entrance of this mountain?! Like, this place needed them the most.

Thirty minutes passed quickly.

"Subaru, if you’re tired, I can carry you." I turned around and said politely. His kimono was leaving a snail trail across the stairway as it touched it, drenching it in sweat.

His face was pale. His eyes were twitching, ready to lose consciousness at any moment. His face was as pale as a dead body’s.

We had climbed over four thousand of these steps. And, there was still no stop. Naturally, Suge took no breaks, and our paces were rather fast. It would fuck up a normal human.

Even someone like Subaru, who had a very athletic physique.

He was using his white sword as a walking stick. His legs were shaking, and Alya barely caught him when he almost fell down a five-hundred-meter cliff.

As much as I wanted not do that because it surely would hurt his pride, I couldn’t help myself. I owed this dude. We were going to primordial trials soon. How lame it would be if he died here?

I was not risking that. Maybe he understood that, or maybe he just was really fucking tired.

"Can you?" He said, his face showed signs of relief, though he strained his face to maintain expressionlessness.

I said nothing in response and just crouched. He climbed on my back with a darkened face.

I stood up, and we continued our walk. No one dared say anything. Hell, they didn’t even dare look at him.

...

Two hours had passed. The city I saw now was similar size to when I was flying. We were probably a few thousand meters high.

The stairs had thinned in size but not in thickness. Now, it was smaller than a brick, and by its side was a ravine nobody could see an end to.

It was dark and echoed with a silence that made anyone uncomfortable.

Subaru must be very sleepy to have slept in this environment, and the thin air we were struggling to breathe in.

"It’s right here," Suge said, suddenly halting with a nod.

There was nothing in front of us. Just a steep turn to the right by a "stair" the size of half a brick.

Suge began walking, and to our utter shock, he did not turn. He just walked forward, passing the steep turn.

My pupils dilated as he stood in mid-air.

"Mater Von, we are here." He announced as he motioned us with his hand behind his back to come. He crouched in mid-air. Like, there was ground beneath.

Alya nudged Subaru to wake up with her elbow before we followed with our hearts beating louder than ever as we passed the steeping rock.

As I pressed my feet on the air, it was.... solid?

Solid like a stone floor.

"Welcome. Lucien, the vampire prince. Alya, the girl with a connection to Frieda. Subaru, the otherworlder." A deep voice echoed directly in our heads as a brilliant light flashed.
