The Lady of the Prestigious Family is a Big Boss-Chapter 787, Life Without That Person (2)
"Ye Yu has been making big moves within the Ye Group recently, and Ye Miao’s injury is almost certainly related to Xiang Zhen," Ye Yuan continued.
Ye Jiuliang furrowed his brows, showing a hint of confusion, "Isn’t the Ye Group being managed by the fourth elder and Ye Lei? What does Ye Yu have to do with it?"
She hadn’t been in the capital for this period and wasn’t very familiar with the affairs of the Ye Family.
However, the elder was always a man who favored sons over daughters; it was unlikely that he would allow Ye Yu to be overly involved in the affairs of the Ye Group.
Ye Yuan briefly explained to her the situation he had investigated. After listening, Ye Jiuliang became even more puzzled.
If Ye Yu was acting so recklessly, the elder definitely wouldn’t be unaware. Unless he had already given his tacit approval...the only way the elder would be so indulgent with Ye Yu was if...
Her cold eyes focused, unless Ye Yu had some kind of leverage over the elder. Otherwise, it would be impossible for him to let her cause such upheaval within the Group.
"Ajiu, have you thought of something?" Mingchong asked, noticing her furrowed brow.
Ye Jiuliang shook her head, "Nothing much."
She took another bite of her meal and then looked up at Ye Yuan, "Dad, have you checked up on Xiang Zhen?"
Ye Yuan nodded, "I’m on it. Some of the evidence is still not sufficient, but by tomorrow, things should become clear."
"So, are you going to the Ye Family tomorrow?" she asked.
"Do you want to join me?"
"Sure."
Father and daughter shared a smile before the topic shifted elsewhere.
...
By the time the video conference was over, it was already dark.
Wen Rang set down the documents and stretched languidly; his gaze inadvertently caught sight of the harmonica on his desk, sparking a flicker of curiosity.
He asked offhand, "Yisheng, when did you buy a new harmonica?"
Jiang Yisheng brought over two cups of coffee, his eyes briefly flickering when he touched the harmonica on the desk, "Saw it while browsing at the music store, liked it, so I bought it on a whim."
"Here, coffee."
Wen Rang took the coffee cup, thanked him, and then mentioned, "Just to let you know, the endorsement shoot has been moved up a few days."
"Does that mean my trip has to end early?" Jiang Yisheng asked, a gentle smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
Wen Rang shrugged helplessly, saying, "I didn’t want that either. I was hoping you’d treat me to a trip, but it seems that’s not going to happen."
Jiang Yisheng chuckled, "Why don’t you have a talk with the shoot’s team, see if they can push the schedule back?"
"Better not, President Feng would kill me," Wen Rang gestured with his hands, feigning a look of horror.
With the shoot moved up, it meant the endorsed product was launching earlier, and if he were to suggest delaying the shoot, President Feng would indeed come after him, metaphorical knife in hand.
Jiang Yisheng smiled faintly, "Then arrange it, we’ll go over tomorrow."
There were things to attend to before the shoot anyway. Going a day early would also allow for a visit to J City, which didn’t sound too bad.
Wen Rang gave an ok gesture and sipped his coffee.
Jiang Yisheng picked up the harmonica, his smile fading from his eyes.
It was time for him to return to his former life. A life without that person.
**
The Ye Family.
The dining room was suffused with a solemn atmosphere.
The occasional clink of porcelain bowls in the spacious area accentuated the awkwardness.
After several days of poor rest, Ye Yu looked haggard, her makeup unable to conceal the dark circles under her eyes.
"Ye Yu, now that Ye Miao has awakened, you should stop worrying so much. You haven’t rested well these past few days, just look how wan your complexion is. How about not going to the company today and getting some rest at home instead?" Xiang Zhen laid down her chopsticks, her eyes conveying concern as she looked at her.
Ye Yu’s expression stiffened slightly, the concern in her eyes felt ironic.
Crying crocodile tears and playing the good Samaritan—she didn’t buy it for a second; Ye Yu was all too aware that Xiang Zhen had been covertly rallying the board of directors’ shareholders for Ye Lei these past few days, even at the expense of pulling strings through her own family’s influence.
Did she think that Ye Yu was too preoccupied with taking care of Ye Miao to care about the company’s business? She was determined not to let Xiang Zhen’s son inherit the Ye Group so easily.
"Sister-in-law, thank you for your concern, but the company has been swamped recently. If I’m not there, I’m afraid others might mishandle things. I won’t be at ease unless I oversee them myself."
"How could that be? There are so many people in the company, they’re not there just to look pretty. Don’t try to handle everything personally; you’ll wear yourself out," Xiang Zhen said with a smile.
Ye Yu deftly replied, "That may be true, but as you know, the company has just recently stabilized. It’s only right to put in a bit more effort."
"Yes, the company was able to stabilize so quickly this time largely because of your and Dad’s help. Although Ye Lei is young, he has been working with Ye Yan all along and can handle the company’s affairs very well. You should rest once in a while; don’t wear yourself out. Let Ye Lei deal with those matters," said Xiang Zhen, subtly probing.
Ye Yu kept a smile on her face, but inside she scoffed coldly. To put it bluntly, Xiang Zhen simply wanted her out of the company, afraid that she would take Ye Lei’s place.
"Uncle."
A loud voice came from outside the living room, causing the faces of Xiang Zhen and the others to change abruptly.
No news is good news, and Ye Yuan’s sudden visit here was bound to be anything but congenial.
"Uncle, Jiuliang Miss, please take a seat. I’ll go and invite the master down." After having the maid serve tea to Ye Yuan and his party, Aren turned and went upstairs.
Ye Yuan sat on the sofa, his gaze sweeping indifferently across the room. He hadn’t returned here for over a decade, and everything was just as it had been before.
"Big brother."
Ye Yu walked out of the kitchen with a smile on her face, as if the quarrel that happened at Ye Yuan’s place a few days ago had never taken place.
Following her were Xiang Zhen and her daughter.
Seeing the father and daughter seated on the sofa, Ye Xin’s gaze dimmed for a moment, and a hint of resentment flashed across her eyes.
"Big brother, what brings you by today?" Ye Yu approached, her eyes sweeping over Ye Jiuliang, who was engrossed in her phone, her thoughts shifting subtly.
Remembering how she had accused Ye Jiuliang of hurting Ye Miao, Ye Yuan didn’t even deem her worthy of a glance; he simply ignored her.
With Xiang Zhen and her daughter watching, Ye Yu looked somewhat embarrassed, flustered.
"We heard that Ye Miao was injured, so we came to pay a visit," Ye Jiuliang put away her phone, her cool voice emerging from her throat.
"Also, to ask a question—is it that anyone in the Ye Family can pin their little sesame-sized issues on me as they please, hmm?"
As her words fell, a piercing gaze shot over, and Ye Yu’s heart skipped a beat.
"I..." She offered a strained smile, trying to smooth things over, "Jiuliang, it’s all a misunderstanding. That day, in the heat of the moment, I got flustered when Ye Miao was injured. I really didn’t mean anything else by it. Don’t take it the wrong way."
"Hmm."
Ye Jiuliang stood up; her pregnant belly noticeably prominent.
She walked at a measured pace, saying, "But you went all the way to my father to confront him. Calling it a misunderstanding seems a bit far-fetched, doesn’t it?"
With every step she took closer, a bit more color drained from Ye Yu’s face.
She never felt this anxious even in front of the family patriarch, but in the presence of Ye Jiuliang, she easily lost her nerve.
