Chapter 60: 060, This couldn’t be setting me up with someone, could it?

Not to mention Zhang Nianlei, who had little fame.

Zhang Nianlei caught a glimpse of the contemptuous and disdainful looks from the surrounding staff out of the corner of her eye. Her face flushed as she bit her lip tightly.

"Director Xutian, I’m sorry, please give me another chance."

Director Xutian threw down the script, his face ashen. "Everyone take a break, and we’ll continue in a while."

As soon as he finished speaking, the makeup artist and assistants quickly went over to touch up the actors’ makeup and adjust their clothing.

Meanwhile, Zhang Nianlei was pulled aside by her agent to apologize to the director.

"Director Xutian, I’m sorry, it’s Leilei’s first time shooting such a big production movie, and she’s inevitably a bit nervous. Give her some time to adjust her state, she definitely won’t let you down," the agent said with an apologetic smile.

She tugged Zhang Nianlei’s arm, signaling her to hurry up and apologize.

It’s just a director, what’s there to be so arrogant about.

Zhang Nianlei cursed inwardly but managed a smile on her face, "Director Xutian, I didn’t get enough rest yesterday, so I’m a bit off today, I’m sorry. Please give me one more chance, I promise to perform well."

Having been in the industry for over twenty years, Director Xutian had a discerning eye and, with an impatient wave of his hand, said, "Alright, alright, there’s no need for a lot of pretty words. The next scene is with Ji Mingqian. If you screw that up, you better be prepared to leave."

With those words, he turned to discuss the details of the next scene with the staff.

Corners of the set, Zhang Nianlei couldn’t suppress her temper anymore, "It’s just a director, how dare he scold me, he’ll see what’s coming to him sooner or later."

"Leilei, stop it. If you want a place in the industry, you definitely can’t offend Director Xutian. His influence in the industry is much deeper than you think," her agent warned.

"And I must remind you, in the next scene with Ji Mingqian, you must give it your all. He hates it when people mess up..."

"I know, I know," Zhang Nianlei interrupted impatiently, her heart, however, looking forward to meeting Ji Mingqian sooner.

If she could get close to Ji Mingqian, she wouldn’t have to worry about lacking resources in the industry.

She curved her lips into a confident smile, her eyes flashing with determined brightness.

Suddenly, there was a commotion at the entrance.

"Mingqian is here, Mingqian is here."

"Mingqian looks so handsome."

Ji Mingqian came over in his costume, with Chen Xin following by his side.

Upon entering the set, Ji Mingqian walked straight over to the director.

"Old Xu, can we start now?"

Ji Mingqian’s debut film was directed by Xutian, and the two shared common interests and a very good friendship.

"We can start, but you, boy, should be mentally prepared," said Director Xutian, revealing a rare smile upon seeing Ji Mingqian.

Ji Mingqian raised an eyebrow, "What’s the situation?"

Director Xutian sighed. "You’ll find out soon enough."

"Mingqian."

A soft, feminine voice called out from behind.

Ji Mingqian felt a chill.

He turned around, and there was Zhang Nianlei already approaching him.

Because of the needs of the next scene, she was wearing heavy clothing, and in the heat of the summer, her makeup was nearly coming off.

"Mingqian, hello, I’m Zhang Nianlei." She greeted him in a soft voice, a shy smile on her face.

Ji Mingqian glanced at her, then indifferently withdrew his gaze, saying coolly, "If you’re ready, then let’s start shooting."

Zhang Nianlei did not expect Ji Mingqian to be so indifferent, and her smile froze on her face.

Before she could speak again, Director Xutian, holding a megaphone, shouted, "Everyone get ready."

This scene was set in a dimly lit chamber. Ji Mingqian got into character in a second, dressed in black and tainted with the stench of blood. In the darkness, those deep eyes teemed with killing intent.

"Move aside."

The cold voice was hoarse.

In his hand, he dragged a middle-aged man, and in the other, he held a gun pointed at the man’s forehead.

Surrounded, a group of people in black encircled him.

War, on the verge of erupting.

"Xutian, don’t hurt my uncle," Zhang Nianlei stumbled over, where tears should have cascaded down her cheeks, yet not a single one could she muster.

Her expression was stiff, rigidly dragging her out of character.

"Cut, cut, cut."

Director Xu rose from his seat, slamming the table, his face extremely ugly.

"Zhang Nianlei, what the hell are you doing?"

Time and again, his patience had been utterly exhausted by her.

"Director, I’m sorry, I..." Having been reprimanded once more, and in front of Ji Mingqian no less, Zhang Nianlei’s face was awash with embarrassment, as she apologized in a soft voice.

A hoarse voice interrupted her, "Old Xu."

Hearing this voice, Zhang Nianlei’s head shot up, her eyes expectant as she looked toward Ji Mingqian, thinking he would speak up for her.

"Old Xu, replace her. Let’s reshoot this scene once you find someone suitable," Ji Mingqian had just barely recovered from his character, his eyes still slightly bloodshot.

Knowing his temperament, Director Xu nodded with a somber face, determined never to use Zhang Nianlei again.

She was simply ruining his script.

"No, it can’t be like this." Realizing Ji Mingqian meant to replace her, Zhang Nianlei’s face turned pale, her voice suddenly shrill.

"Director Xu, you can’t just switch me out like this, it’s not by the book."

Ji Mingqian, his head throbbing from her piercing voice, headed for the door, "Old Xu, I’ll go to the makeup room. Call me after you sort this out."

Chen Xin watched Zhang Nianlei making a scene, shaking his head.

With a temper like that, she couldn’t last long in the industry.

The decision to replace Zhang Nianlei on the spot caused turmoil at the film set, delaying the shooting schedule.

Ji Mingqian changed his clothes and was about to leave when Director Xu walked in.

"Mingqian, it’s been a while, how about dinner together?"

Ji Mingqian grabbed his sunglasses and phone, responding readily, "Sure."

As he spoke, he turned to Chen Xin, "You go back first, I’ll return to the hotel on my own later."

"Okay," Chen Xin nodded.

The two walked out of the makeup room, chatting about the film.

"Old Xu, how did you pick the people this time?"

Knowing he was referring to Zhang Nianlei, Director Xu gave a helpless smile, "It’s a long story. There was a loophole that got exploited. If you hadn’t mentioned replacing her today, I would’ve considered it myself."

The industry waters are muddied; sometimes loopholes are just inevitable.

"By the way, I’ve invited someone else to dinner tonight, you don’t mind, do you?"

Ji Mingqian raised his eyebrows, "Who?"

"The performer of our movie’s end credits song, who also wrote the lyrics," Director Xu replied with a secretive smile, "He’s as well-known in the industry as you."

Ji Mingqian curved his lips, teasing, "With such satisfaction on your face, it seems I must get to know him well."

"You’re about the same age; you’ll probably have a lot to talk about." Director Xu said.

"Old Xu, you’re not trying to set me up, are you?" Ji Mingqian replied humorously.

"As if you need any help finding someone; you’d grab a bunch just by walking out," Director Xu laughed and cursed, "The person is a guy."

Ji Mingqian chuckled, slipped on his sunglasses, and left with Director Xu through the back door into a car.

The filming location was far from the city center; it took two hours by car to reach downtown as darkness fell.

Director Xu had reserved a Japanese restaurant.

Frequenting the place, he led Ji Mingqian upstairs with practiced ease.
