Chapter 125: Cover (3)

Dinner ended better than it started and when it came time to leave, a pair of shoes from Hazel’s bedroom were placed for her to wear back to her room.

Hazel used a few napkins to wrap up the shoes she wore all day so she could get rid of them herself to stop anyone else from seeing the damage done.

Tobias dismissed the maid and was the one to help Hazel to put on the shoes much to his mother’s dismay.

"I will retire for the night," Tobias announced.

Hazel was left dumbfounded as Tobias walked away after excusing himself. She anticipated that the goodbye would have been a little longer or he would be so bold to walk with her for as much as he could before she got closer to her room.

Hazel bid her goodbye to everyone else at the table and departed with her maids. When she returned to her room, the maids were quick to do a warm bath for her and get her undressed.

Hazel tried her best to hide her feet and even refrained from looking down at them. She was afraid to see what was done to her feet because there was no telling how she would react and with the maids still present, all her effort to cover up this matter would be for nothing.

"If you need us during the night, please ring the bell."

Hazel watched as the maids left the room after giving it a quick clean.

"Finally," she whispered, finally relaxed now that she was left alone.

This long day came to an end. The best part about her days in the palace was when she could be alone in her room so she could be herself.

Hazel made her way to the bed to sit on it. It was time to take a look at her feet and find a way to take care of them. Hazel slowly moved her feet up to bring them into view, but before she could get a good look at them, there was a knock on the balcony.

Hazel jumped, startled by the noise and turned to the source of it. Standing there once again was Tobias. She wasted no time going to the door to unlock it before someone spotted him standing outside. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

"I thought you were retiring to your room," Hazel said the second she opened the door.

"Really Hazel? You should have seen right through that lie. You should be off your feet," Tobias said, bending down to lift Hazel into his arms. "Why didn’t someone stay behind to treat your feet?"

"If they did, you would have been caught standing there. My maids just left."

"Lucky me. I am one step ahead with an ointment that should help. It’s fairly new but I have been hearing good things about it," Tobias said as he laid her down on the bed. He avoided staring at her for too long because of her current attire.

He had not considered the fact she would be in her nightdress and how uncomfortable his presence might be for her.

Tobias looked away and said, "You can pull the blanket up and just leave out your feet."

"Oh." Hazel realised how she was dressed now. She ran to him without looking for a coat first to hide her body. Luckily, the nightdress picked the maids covered her body well. It was quite old-looking by having a long sleeve and should not seduce Tobias.

Hazel did as Tobias instructed her to and left out her feet for him to apply the ointment.

"Why lie?" Tobias asked.

"You know better than me that if I allowed it to be addressed any further, I would never hear the end of it from anyone looking to humiliate me. I don’t need shoes to be what anyone makes a mockery of me about," Hazel said, gripping the sheets as Tobias touched where the shoes had rubbed her skin.

"That I can understand, but don’t bear with pain to avoid chatter. People will find something to talk about and you can’t always stop it. You have the power to send one of your maids to get a different pair of shoes for you. Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t have some kind of power in the palace,’ said Tobias.

It was not power like the queen had or even Sofia’s, but it was better than nothing. As long as Hazel didn’t go around ordering everyone as if she owned the palace already, it wouldn’t be a problem.

"This is my first day here. I’m still understanding what I can and can’t do. The issue of shoes and dresses will be taken care of," Hazel said, certain of it.

The queen wasn’t going to be slow with getting it changed now that the king was aware of it. Hazel learned that the one person the queen didn’t like to know of her antics was Jeffrey. Hazel assumed that Tabitha couldn’t argue with Jeffrey as she would with Tobias.

Knowing this was useful to get the queen to keep her act of being a good mother-in-law and advisor.

"I promise you something like this won’t happen again. After having to hold in my tears all day, I am determined to never put up with this again."

Tobias smiled, enjoying her eagerness to defend herself in the future. He had no choice but to leave this to Hazel. As much as he wanted to storm off to his mother and hear what her intentions were, he would stay out of it for now to let Hazel deal with it.

He was ready to fight all her battles, but sometimes he would have to take a step back and let her think about how to solve her problems. Being the one to do it for her all the time wouldn’t help her last in the palace.

"Do as you wish. I’ll be standing off to the back with a sword to kill anyone for you. Just say the word. I don’t care who it is," he spoke softly. "Did that make you fall in love with me?’

"No, but it almost ruined the moment by you asking. Please promise me that you will let this go," Hazel said as it didn’t deserve to be brought another day.

"As long as you promise me that you will not try to hide something like this from me. If you want to hide it from my father or the maids, fine, but you have to be honest with me as I plan to be honest with you. Promise?" Tobias asked, holding out his right pinky for her to seal the promise.

"A pinky promise?" Hazel chuckled.

Tobias didn’t see the issue with making a deal this way. "Of course. It’s the best way to make a deal. You’ll be making a lot of pinky promises with Sofia. So, do we have a deal?"

Hazel shook her head at his childishness which she found to be cute. "I promise to tell you when I am hurting. I might have felt something for you more for being the first person to notice right away that I was hurting and do something about it," she confessed.

"Does that mean I might get another kiss?" Tobias questioned, excited.

"We have a deal that you are to behave and then I will give you a kiss," she reminded him.

"Right, right. The cruel torture of waiting," Tobias muttered. "As if it isn’t enough that I am touching your stinky feet."

Hazel gasped, offended by his claim. "My feet are not stinky."

"You are not the one touching them so how would you know? Another day when they are in better shape, I might give them a little lick to confirm who is right."

Though they were her feet and they were clean in her eyes, Hazel didn’t like them going anywhere near his mouth. "Are you crazy? It is not good to lick anyone’s foot."

Tobias thought differently.
