Chapter 124: Cover (2)

Tabitha looked straight ahead to avoid Jeffrey’s gaze. Why was it important to discuss shoes when she was going to have the size changed?

"Tabitha," Jeffrey called to her, impatient for an answer. "Speak now."

"My shoes are too small for my feet," Hazel answered.

Jeffrey turned to Hazel.

"They are too small and rather than say something, I endured the pain. The queen has agreed to have the size changed for me, but the new shoes won’t be here until sometime tomorrow so I will use the shoes I brought with me from home," Hazel explained further. "It is the same with my dresses."

"Tomorrow? You mean to tell me that in this palace there is no one to bring new shoes for you right away? Or go to your room to get shoes that would fit you? That doesn’t make any sense," Jeffrey said, facing his awfully quiet wife.

Tabitha knew that it wouldn’t make sense to Jeffrey. Why would it? A prince never had to bear with something like what the women marrying into this crazy family had to do.

"I said something about the shoes at the last moment and didn’t think of sending anyone for my other shoes. Since I said nothing, everyone must have thought that it was fine," said Hazel.

Hazel looked in the king’s direction and was able to see Tabitha sitting nervously. She hoped that Tabitha didn’t misunderstand what she was doing and thought that she was covering for her. She was trying to let the matter go rather than have everyone be so concerned about her shoes.

Hearing what Hazel said, Jeffrey didn’t want to pry further into the matter. Still, he had to speak with Tabitha to get the maids and everyone around Hazel to be more attentive to her. He made a promise to Nathan and already Hazel was hurt.

He couldn’t tell Tobias to relax when something like this happened.

Hazel should have said something if she was hurting, but at the same time, the maids around her were meant to be one step ahead. Should Hazel show any signs of pain, they should have been quick to find the problem and fix it. It seemed that they failed to realise that they were caring for a future royal.

"I apologise for it not being the right size for you. This is a mistake that normally doesn’t happen in the palace. Everything will be fixed by tomorrow morning. Please forgive us," Jeffrey said, not wanting Hazel to have the wrong opinion of them.

"Thank you," Hazel replied.

Hopefully, this would take the attention off her feet and they could move on.

"If my mother planned to change the shoes because of the size, it’s a little odd that someone quick to resolve problems didn’t think to send someone to get your shoes to avoid bruising your foot. It’s strange that no one thought of measuring Hazel before getting the shoes and dresses," Tobias said, refusing to believe Hazel’s words when they didn’t make sense.

Hazel moved her hand from her lap over to Tobias to hold his hand. When they had a moment alone she would tell him the truth as it was the only way to calm him for now.

Tobias felt Hazel squeeze his hand, a silent plea for him to put an end to this now. Why let this matter go away easily? If his mother had known about the pain Hazel was in, she should give answers for why she left Hazel to be in pain.

It wasn’t easy for Hazel to just speak up and demand that her shoes be changed. She was speaking to the queen of all people. It would still be his mother’s decision for the maids to get a change of shoes for Hazel.

Tobias held her hand so she wouldn’t move it until it came time for them to eat. He would find his answers later tonight and then deal with it himself. "The maids need to pay more attention to Hazel. Hazel is new to the palace so she might be afraid to speak up as she should. Please have those around her consider that, mother."

"I will," Tabitha replied. With this, they should move on to a better conversation.

Hazel didn’t mind that Tobias caged her hand. It was comforting in the moment and she didn’t want it to stop even if someone were to notice what they were doing. This might not be exempt from what they were not to do with each other when they were not yet married.

Hazel peered across the table at the young princess. Sofia was the only one confused at the table and seeing this, Hazel glad that she decided to brush over the matter. The princess shouldn’t know now that her mother wasn’t the nicest person.

That was for Sofia to discover on her own.

"Then, we should move on to something better so Hazel’s first family dinner with us isn’t ruined. Sofia was looking forward to meeting you. Say hello to your brother’s future wife," Jeffrey said.

"Hello," Sofia greeted Hazel. It was about time they got to the introductions so she could speak to Hazel. "What part of the kingdom do you reside in?" She asked, eager to learn about the town as she never stepped out of the palace a day in her life.

"Sofia," Tabitha warned. "You might make her miss home by having to speak about it." freёwebnoѵel.com

Sofia panicked, worried her question would have Hazel wanting to leave to go back home. Hazel couldn’t leave yet. Not before they got to talk and play.

"Sorry," Sofia shyly apologised.

"It is fine. I am happy to talk about my home. It is to the east of the palace, past the church, and going toward the east road to take you to the countryside," Hazel answered.

Sofia wished to hear about the countryside but knew her mother wouldn’t allow it so she didn’t ask. Maybe when they were alone Hazel would want to tell her all about it.

"It’s been some time since I visited the countryside. When the seat of the king no longer belongs to me, I should take a trip there," said Jeffrey.

"You will enjoy it. Most of the people in Lockwood don’t like to visit the countryside because it is quiet, but you’ll be surprised by what happens there. There will never be a dull moment," Hazel said.

"Perhaps that is where our honeymoon should be. A week away from the palace before we are buried with work," Tobias proposed.

He would like for the wedding to be tomorrow so they could leave for the countryside afterwards. Maybe they might settle there and not come back.

"You will spend your days after the wedding in a small house owned by the palace. It wouldn’t be safe for the two of you to go to the countryside," Tabitha said, shutting down the idea. "We must think of your safety first."

"I’ve heard news there is no change at the border so we must be cautious of where we go. The palace is the safest place for us to be right now. I shall make your stay in that mansion one that is unforgettable," Tabitha promised.

Knowing that the queen was preparing it, Hazel knew to look forward to something going wrong.
