The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 113: Evil plans (2)
Chapter 113: Evil plans (2)
"Why are you here? Not that I mind, but you usually like retiring to your home after visiting the palace," Kenneth said as he poured a drink for his father.
"Where are your sons? As soon as we returned, they didn’t come to talk to me,’ said Grant.
His grandson should be present since he was here. What had come of their manners?
"They were up early this morning then guarding their sister and mother. They’ve either retired to their rooms or went to train. Whatever keeps them from bothering me," Kenneth replied, placing a small glass of alcohol before Grant.
"They should have stuck around to see if I needed them. Of your four children, why did the girl turn out the best? Linda couldn’t stop asking what I needed before she left to speak with her mother. Those boys need a little more teaching. Send them to my house," Grant ordered Kenneth.
In three days, he could have his grandsons straightened out.
As someone who dealt with Grant trying to teach you old manners, Kenneth would not be sending his sons. He quietly sat down, taking a sip of his drink.
"What is it you want to speak about? You didn’t come here just to have a drink with you. Normally you make us come to you for that," Kenneth said, finding his father’s behaviour to be a bit odd.
"Well, I am the elder so of course you should come to me. What do you think of what happened today? With the engagement," said Grant.
He was still curious about what Kenneth spoke about with the prince, but he couldn’t ask immediately.
"What am I supposed to think about it? It seems that during the selection the two developed feelings for each other. Isn’t that the point of it?" Kenneth asked.
Kenneth took up the almost empty bottle and poured himself a second share of alcohol that would be his last.
"It would have been good if Linda would have been picked to become queen. That girl is destined for great things. A shame how it ended," Grant said and then drowned his drink. He pushed the empty glass to Kenneth for more to be poured.
"I don’t find it to be a shame. I never wanted Linda to become queen. We were going to turn down the invitation if not for you-"
"Because it would have been rude. When has a family been honoured with being invited to the palace and turned it down? Do you know what would be said? The palace has finally extended invitations to more than nobles. You should be honoured," Grant said, trying not to raise his voice. "They desperately need people like us."
Kenneth stayed silent as he no longer cared about the selection to think about the invitation or the fact his daughter was among the children of nobles at the time or children of businessmen like Hazel. It was all over now so why linger on the past?
"If only Linda wasn’t so caught up with Edgar, she would have been focused and the one to be announced as engaged to the crown prince. You should have had a serious talk with her before she left," Grant said, thinking it was Kenneth’s fault.
Linda needed a good talk to forget about her feelings for Edgar and go for Tobias. Had Grant been around the matter would have been handled right away.
"Father, I appreciate you thinking that her path was to become queen, but it is not what Linda wanted and not what I want for her. I don’t want my daughter anywhere in the palace. I don’t frequent the palace unless it is important and I rarely send my sons there. It is not for Linda," Kenneth said, hoping his father would respect this.
"Besides," Kenneth continued whilst pouring another drink for Grant. "Hazel and the prince seem to be a good match. You’ve watched her grow from a young girl to the young lady she is now. She has a good heart and I have no problem fighting to protect her. Our second daughter has gotten engaged."
Grant’s mood became more sour after hearing Kenneth refer to Hazel as his second daughter. Everything would have been a little bit easier had it been another woman picked by the prince. Hazel’s close ties with many in this family would make this a challenge so for now, he had to do everything alone.
’How is he my son?’ Grant wondered.
If not for Kenneth taking after him as a knight and being good at leading an army of men, Grant would have started to question further if his wife had ever cheated on him.
The woman would have to want to lose her life if she ever did such a thing. She was normally well-behaved so he couldn’t believe that she did.
It had to be the woman that Kenneth married who was making him soft. Grant had lectured Kenneth many times on how a woman was to act yet Kenneth allowed his wife to do as she wanted. Perhaps it was why his grandsons behaved as they did.
Grant could allow for his grandsons to not be present, but his daughter-in-law should be present to serve Kenneth’s guest a drink. It was more important that she be here since it was her father-in-law. If only he could reverse time and have Kenneth marry someone else.
"Nathan must be jumping for joy now that his daughter is engaged to the prince. He had double the chance for the next queen to come from his family. Everyone will be going to him now trying to get on his good side. His true colours might show now," said Grant.
"What are you trying to get at? I know Nathan well and that man has no interest in letting anyone get near him if they want something from his family. I didn’t realise how invested you were in this selection. You’ve been making it quite clear that you are disappointed Linda wasn’t selected," Kenneth said, now realising his father’s true intent for them accepting the invitation.
It wasn’t that Grant was worried about what would be said about their family not accepting the palace’s invitation, he wanted Linda to become queen.
"Linda is quite happy for her friend and though you might think there was no one better than your granddaughter to become queen, you must let it go. Someone we are close to has been chosen therefore we should be there to support her. Do not show your disappointment to Linda anymore," Kenneth said as he didn’t want Linda to think she failed them.
"I wouldn’t do that to Linda. I’m just a little upset that they didn’t see how good my granddaughter is. Hensons don’t lose to anyone, but I can make an exception for Hazel. I look forward to her reign as queen. I must take leave now," Grant said, bored with the conversation. It would be better to speak with someone who wanted what he wanted.
"No need to walk me out. I will come by for Linda when I am heading to the palace so she can see her friend. You don’t like it, but Linda will be in the palace quite often. She might end up wanting to live there. Wouldn’t that be quite the twist?" Grant asked, secretly looking forward to Linda wanting to do just that.
