The Husband I Loved for Eight Years Never Loved Me-Chapter 49: Exactly Like Tristan Sterling
Chapter 49: The Spitting Image of Tristan Sterling
Inside the hospital.
Julian Jennings, Joanna Sutton, and Thomas Sterling were all there.
Wendy Royce and Florence Preston stayed by her side the whole time.
The doctors were monitoring Rachel Royce’s condition around the clock.
With so many people accompanying her, Rachel was in a very good state, her spirits high.
Julian Jennings called Mr. Fitzwilliam and told him about Rachel’s situation.
"Tristan Sterling isn’t at the hospital?"
Julian paused for a moment, glanced into the hospital room, and said, "Only Thomas is here."
In other words, no one else from the Sterling family was at the hospital.
Mr. Fitzwilliam’s breathing grew heavier.
"At least she has you all with her. Give the phone to Rachel. I want to say a few words to her."
"Alright."
Julian entered the room and handed the phone to Rachel. "It’s Mr. Fitzwilliam. He wants to say a few words to you."
Rachel took the phone. "Teacher Fitzwilliam."
It was unclear what Mr. Fitzwilliam said, but Rachel just replied, "Mhm, okay, I know. Thank you, Teacher Fitzwilliam."
She hung up the phone.
Rachel returned the phone to Julian.
At three in the afternoon.
Rachel was fully dilated.
She was immediately rushed into the operating room.
Half an hour later.
Madam Sterling, Sylvia Shannon, and Evelyn Fitzwilliam arrived outside the operating room.
When Wendy Royce and Florence Preston saw that the Sterlings were only just arriving, they offered a couple of emotionless, perfunctory greetings.
After that, there was no further communication.
Madam Sterling saw Thomas Sterling and asked, "Thomas, when did you get here?"
Thomas replied, "I wasn’t busy today, so I came to check on things."
Madam Sterling didn’t ask any more questions.
Madam Sterling and the others went into a room to wait.
Wendy and the others kept an anxious vigil outside the operating room.
An hour later.
The baby was born.
A nurse immediately brought the baby out.
Seeing the nurse emerge with the baby.
Madam Sterling stepped forward. The nurse said, "Six pounds, three ounces. A baby girl. Congratulations, Madam Sterling. Congratulations, Second Madam Sterling."
Madam Sterling beamed, her eyes crinkling with joy as she looked at the little infant. "Look, look! She’s the spitting image of Tristan when he was born."
The moment Sylvia Shannon saw the infant, a smile she couldn’t suppress graced her features. "Yes, she looks so much like Tristan. She’ll definitely be a beautiful girl when she grows up."
Madam Sterling was absolutely overjoyed.
Wendy Royce, not seeing her own daughter emerge, hurriedly asked the nurse, "What about my daughter?"
The nurse replied, "The mother is hemorrhaging. The doctors are still trying to save her."
"What?"
Wendy Royce’s legs gave out, and her body swayed backward.
Someone beside her quickly caught her.
Because the baby was a week premature, the nurse took her to an incubator for observation.
Madam Sterling and Sylvia Shannon followed and left.
Outside the operating room.
Everyone waited with grave expressions.
Evelyn Fitzwilliam glanced at her son, then pulled him aside. Thomas Sterling was feeling agitated. "Mom, what are you doing?"
Evelyn couldn’t help but say, "Your cousin isn’t even here. What are you doing here?"
Although she felt a flicker of sympathy for Rachel, she ultimately had nothing to do with her. The Sterling family only ever cared about the child in Rachel’s womb.
Thomas retorted, "Rachel is my friend. Why can’t I be here?"
Evelyn started to say something.
"That’s enough, Mom. You should go join Grandma and the others."
With that, he turned and walked back toward the operating room.
Evelyn watched her son go, letting out a single sigh.
Madam Sterling sent a photo of the baby to Tristan Sterling and then called him.
Tristan Sterling answered quickly.
"Grandma."
"Did you get the photo?"
Tristan said, "I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet."
Madam Sterling said, "She’s been born. It’s your daughter. You should come to the hospital and see her."
Tristan replied, "I’ll head over when I’m done with work."
"..."
The call ended.
Then, Claire Ainsworth’s hurt and plaintive voice could be heard. "Tristan, you have to stay with me today."
At seven in the evening.
Rachel Royce was wheeled out of the operating room, an oxygen mask on her face.
The people waiting anxiously outside quickly rushed forward. The doctor announced, "Her life is no longer in danger, but the mother is very weak right now. She needs to rest well."
Hearing that her life was no longer in danger.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
Rachel was taken into her hospital room.
Julian and the others waited outside, while Florence Preston, Wendy Royce, and Peter Preston were inside, listening to the doctor’s instructions.
Wendy Royce profusely thanked the doctor.
"We were just doing our job."
The doctor and nurse left the room.
Wendy Royce and Florence Preston looked at the people outside the room and thanked them profusely as well.
Julian said, "The important thing is that Rachel is alright. We should let her get some rest. We’ll come back in a couple of days to visit her and the baby."
"Yes, yes, of course. Thank you so much for staying with Rachel today."
"..."
Julian Jennings and Joanna Sutton said their goodbyes and left.
Thomas Sterling spoke with Peter Preston for a while before leaving.
The baby was in an incubator, so Florence, Wendy, and the others couldn’t see her. Right now, they weren’t worried about the child; they were worried about Rachel.
Tristan Sterling never appeared that day.
The next day, Rachel was still unconscious.
The baby was moved from the incubator to a regular room next to Rachel’s, attended by a dedicated maternity nurse.
Madam Sterling, Master Sterling, Sylvia Shannon, and Harrison Sterling came to see the baby early in the morning.
Madam Sterling held the baby, gently squeezing her tiny hand and cooing, "Our little Melissa is so beautiful."
The baby’s name had already been decided: Melissa Sterling.
The baby stared up at the adults before her with wide, round eyes.
Just then, Tristan Sterling arrived at the room.
He could hear the elders cooing over the baby.
Sylvia Shannon saw him and urged, "Tristan, you’re here! Quick, come see the baby."
Tristan walked over. The newborn in Madam Sterling’s arms was small and delicate, her wide, round eyes curiously observing the world. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
"Daddy’s here. Let Daddy hold you," Madam Sterling said to the baby.
Madam Sterling passed the baby to Tristan, whose arms were stiff, as if he didn’t know how to hold a child.
Seeing her son at a loss for the first time, Sylvia couldn’t help but smile as she showed him how to hold the baby.
Tristan took the baby into his arms. She felt weightless. He looked down at the infant in his embrace.
The baby looked back at him.
Suddenly, the baby gurgled with a laugh.
The sound made everyone in the room laugh. "The baby knows her daddy!"
The man’s cold, stern expression softened at the sound of his daughter’s laugh, and the corners of his lips involuntarily turned up in a smile.
The baby’s room was filled with cheerful laughter.
But next door, Rachel’s room was starkly quiet.
Rachel had not yet woken up.
Wendy Royce and Peter Preston had gone home to rest last night and hadn’t arrived at the hospital yet.
Florence Preston was keeping watch over Rachel.
She could faintly hear the sounds of laughter from next door, and it grated on her ears.
Just then, she noticed a stir from the person on the bed. Seeing Rachel slowly open her eyes, she was so overjoyed that she immediately rushed out to call a doctor.
Tristan heard the commotion.
Madam Sterling said, "Tristan, you should go take a look, too."
The doctor examined Rachel. Now that she had woken up, she would be fine.
However, Rachel was still very weak. She looked at Florence Preston and asked, "The baby? I want to see the baby."
An unbearable sadness welled up in Florence’s heart. Just as she was about to speak, she looked up and saw Tristan Sterling walk into the room, holding the baby.
