Chapter 39: Chapter 38

"This is Ryn, also known as Fireboy, and she is Mira," Elena announced, her steel-blue eyes glinting in the dim light of the ground floor. Her voice cut through the stillness as she gestured toward the small figure perched on Ryn’s shoulder. "Her superhero name is DarkShadow."

Ryn stood near the shattered entrance of Catapony’s hideout, glass crunching beneath his boots. His torn shirt, streaked with soot, clung to his frame, and his amber eyes flickered with unease.

Mira clung to his back, her four-foot form half-hidden behind him, black hair spilling over his shoulder like ink. Her sharp black eyes glared out, displeasure etched into her features as faint shadows curled at her feet, restless and alive.

The heroes Elena had freed from the basement cells filled the cracked lobby, no longer caged. Their tattered costumes hung off bruised bodies—some leaned against the walls for support, others stretched limbs cramped from captivity—but their cheers broke out anyway, raw and unrestrained. "Thank you! Thank you for saving us" they roared, fists pounding the air, voices hoarse with gratitude.

A wiry man with a scarred cheek pushed forward, his chipped-tooth grin wide. "You’re legends for this!" A woman with a singed cape clapped Ryn’s shoulder, her rough voice thick with relief. "Owe you our lives, Fireboy! DarkShadow!"

Curiosity soon mingled with their thanks. A broad-shouldered hero crossed his arms, his gravelly voice skeptical.

"Wait—you from some other country? Never heard of Fireboy or DarkShadow round here." A lean woman with a bandaged hand nodded, her gaze flicking between them, lingering on Mira’s shadowed form. "Yeah, what’s your deal? New recruits?" Another chimed in, half-joking, a smirk tugging at his cracked lips. "You been hiding overseas or something?"

Ryn froze. The attention hit him like a spotlight piercing a decade of shadows. His amber eyes darted over the crowd, his gut twisting as nerves clamped his throat shut. He managed a stiff nod, forcing an awkward, crooked smile. "Uh, yeah, thanks," he stammered, his voice rough and unsteady. "Good to... help." His hands flexed at his sides, restless, unsure.

Mira shrank further against him, her shadows coiling tighter around her small frame. Her black eyes peeked out, narrow and guarded, dodging the crowd’s stares. "Too loud," she muttered, her voice a hiss only Ryn could hear, her small hands gripping his shoulders with bruising force. Elena watched them both, her steel-blue eyes softening, a faint smile tugging at her lips as she savored their discomfort amidst the chaos.

"Wait—DarkShadow?" A hesitant voice sliced through the noise. Heads turned, gazes shifting from Ryn and Mira to the speaker. The Vitalist stood near the edge of the crowd, her silver-gray eyes wide and nervous under the sudden attention. Golden light flickered at her fingertips as she twisted her hands together. "I was a huge fan of hers when I was a kid," she said, her voice shaky, a nervous laugh slipping out.

She glanced at Mira, then away, cheeks flushing. "I didn’t know what she looked like, though—always wore a mask and a big cloak. Even her posters were just cloak and a hood. Mysterious, you know? Used to scare the hell out of villains back then." Her gaze lifted, hopeful yet uncertain, searching Mira’s hidden face. "I had her action figure—cloak and all."

Confusion rippled through the heroes. Brows furrowed, and the broad-shouldered man grunted. "A kid? You’re what—twenty-something? If you were a fan back then, how’s DarkShadow still..."

He trailed off, his eyes flicking to Mira’s small form, barely visible over Ryn’s shoulder, looking no older than a teenager, her shadows curling protectively. The woman with the singed cape frowned. "That math ain’t mathing," she said sharply, squinting at Mira.

The Vitalist nodded, her silver-gray eyes dropping as nerves tightened her voice. "I’m sure of it. She was a legend—those shadows were unmistakable." Her fingers fidgeted, and she risked another glance at Mira. "She disappeared years ago, but I’d know her anywhere."

All eyes turned to Mira. Her head barely peeked out, black hair framing a sharp, unreadable stare. The heroes craned their necks, shoving closer to catch a glimpse, whispers buzzing through the crowd.

"DarkShadow?" "The old legend?" "No way!" "Is she Dark-shadow’s daughter?"

Ryn shifted, his amber eyes narrowing as the throng pressed in. "Hey, easy," he muttered, his voice low and protective, his hand twitching toward Mira.

Her voice cut through the clamor, low and firm.

"Yes, I’m the same DarkShadow." She straightened slightly, her black eyes glinting as shadows twitched at her feet. "We were on a break." Her tone sharpened, slicing off their questions and dodging the confusion twisting their faces.

"Long story—don’t ask."

The crowd stilled for a moment, then erupted again. "Holy crap, it’s her!" the wiry man laughed. "DarkShadow’s back!" The woman with the bandaged hand clapped. "Knew those shadows looked familiar!" Their cheers swelled louder, awe weaving into their gratitude.

Elena stepped forward, her boots clanging on the cracked floor. Her steel-blue eyes swept the crowd, and her voice rose, steady and commanding. "Alright, listen up. Ryn, Mira, and the Vitalist are with us—and we’ve got two more S-class heavyweights in the mix. Vortex, the storm-twister, shredded the Crimson Syndicate’s air fleet last year, left their ships as smoking wrecks in the bay. And Ironclad, built like a bunker, leveled a building when the Black Legion tried to choke Oldtown—punched through steel like it was nothing. With them, we’re not just strong—we’re a wall of fire and iron. But that’s not enough. We’ve got to be tight, a team that doesn’t crack, because we’re hitting back now, taking the fight to the bastards who locked you up. One slip, one dumb mistake, and we’re ash. No room for screw-ups—not when we’ve got this shot to flip the board. You’re not just survivors—you’re proof they can’t break us. Together, we’re the storm they’ll drown in, the blaze they’ll burn under."

Her words struck like a hammer. Silence gripped the crowd, then a roar swelled. Fists pounded the air, eyes sharpened, and battered faces lifted with defiance. "Hell yeah!" the wiry man shouted. "We’re with you!" The woman with the singed cape nodded fiercely. "We’ll kill those bastard villains!" Their voices merged into a jagged chorus, hope igniting in their bruised stares.

Ryn felt it—Elena’s voice dragging him back to the old days, when she’d rally their team before a fight, her steel will pulling them from the brink. His amber eyes glinted, a smile creeping across his face as nostalgia and fire flared in his chest, the battlefield’s pulse sinking into his bones.

Mira shifted, her breath hissing against his neck. "What’re you grinning for?" Her voice was low, teasing, her small hands tightening around his shoulders as shadows brushed his skin.

He turned his head, amber eyes meeting her black ones, his grin widening. "Nothing—just didn’t know you were so shy in front of crowds." His voice dipped, playful, teasing her as a faint blush flared across her cheeks, her black eyes narrowing.

She bit his nape—quick and sharp—making him wince, a grunt escaping, but his grin held. "Not shy," she muttered, her voice muffled against his skin. "Just hate this noise." Her shadows curled tighter, her blush deepening as the crowd’s cheers echoed, some still chanting her name. "DarkShadow! DarkShadow!"

Ryn’s gaze swept over the heroes before him—scarred faces, tattered costumes, eyes blazing with defiance—and it hit him like a fist through his ribs. This was where he belonged: the battlefield’s roar, its blood and fire. Not those endless, quiet years on that isolated island with Elena, where salt air stung his lungs and waves crashed in a dull rhythm. Those days had been calm, pleasant—a soft lie he’d told himself was enough—but they’d left a hollow ache gnawing inside him, buried under ash and silence. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

Now it burned free—scorching through his veins—the itch to unleash his flames, to let them roar wild.

He wasn’t just here just to fight.

He was here to hunt.

And if luck was on his side, he would find the villain who had killed his family.
