Chapter 200: Chapter 200 Who’s Really Behind All This?

Tristan stared at the man’s bloodthirsty glare and let out a sarcastic chuckle. "Even if I told you, you wouldn’t believe me, would you?"

Connor’s pupils shrank. He furrowed his brows. "I’ve had my doubts too. But it’s like an unsolvable puzzle. I was just blindly chasing revenge, needed someone to blame. Tristan, just tell me—who’s really behind all this?"

Tristan pressed the gun right between his eyebrows. "Dying’s easy. It’s living that’s the hard part. Sometimes, the truth is what really breaks you."

He holstered the gun and stood up, voice cold to the bone. "If anything happens to my woman, I swear I’ll put a bullet in your head."

He turned and strode to the Land Rover, yanking open the passenger door. "Megan, are you hurt?"

His eyes showed nothing but worry as he leaned in and unbuckled her seatbelt, undoing the ropes.

Megan shook her head gently. "When the brakes hit earlier, the seatbelt dug into my belly. It hurt a little, but I’m okay now."

Tristan glanced at the man lying in front of the car and sneered, "My hands were never clean—I don’t mind dirtying them some more."

Megan frowned and reached for his shoulder. "Don’t. It’s not worth it. My brother and his assistant Emily were taken. And..."

She finally asked the one thing she feared most. "Any news on Grandpa?"

Tristan lowered his gaze. "He’s gone."

Her hands trembled violently. "Tristan, I... can you just hold me?"

He pulled her into his arms without hesitation. "Don’t get too worked up. It’s not good for the baby."

Her eyes turned red as she took a deep breath, wiping away her tears. "Who’s handling things?"

"Dad and Chloe. Kevin was supposed to come too, but I told him to stay and handle it."

Megan nodded. "Let’s go get my brother, Tristan."

Tristan knew trying to send her back now was pointless. Once Megan set her mind to something, not even a herd of bulls could drag her back.

Connor stood up and dusted himself off. "I’ll take you. I know where they’re being held."

Tristan’s eyes turned icy. "What’s your condition?"

Connor gave a crooked grin. "You don’t disappoint, Tristan. Always a step ahead. I want you to take down the one pulling the strings."

Tristan gave a short laugh. "I’ll help you find him. But you’ll be the one to handle the rest."

Connor wiped the blood from his mouth, licking the back of his teeth. "Deal."

The Land Rover sped down the highway, Connor at the wheel, Tristan and Megan seated in the back.

Tristan made a quick call to Oliver and Samuel. Then he handed Megan her phone. "Call her if you want."

Megan hesitated, not sure if Chloe still resented her. She lowered her head.

"If Grandpa hadn’t made those decisions back then, the Shaw family wouldn’t be in this mess now."

She shook her head. "If I hadn’t been swapped back then, maybe I’d have been the one traded away to Wendy Ford’s parents, and I wouldn’t even be here right now."

She wasn’t trying to justify Bernard’s choices—just laying out the facts.

Bernard treated her well out of guilt, but Wendy’s parents had tried to erase the real daughter of the Shaw family to keep things quiet.

People have selfish motives, but not every heart is the same.

In the end, Megan pressed her sister’s number, and Chloe picked up instantly.

"Chloe... I’m sorry."The voice on the other end sounded choked up. "Megan, I’m just so relieved you’re okay. You have no idea how scared I was. I knew Tristan would bring you back. When are you coming home?"

Megan bit her lip gently. "Chloe... Grandpa’s gone. Don’t you blame me?"

Chloe’s voice was thick with emotion, but she let out a soft laugh. "Blame you? Megan, no one in the Shaw family has any right to blame you. Least of all me. The second you chose to save me... all the resentment just vanished. We’re the closest sisters on this planet, aren’t we?"

Megan’s voice cracked, tears catching in her throat. "Yeah... you’re the best little sister I could’ve asked for. Chloe, take care of Dad for me. Kevin really cares about you—try to be good to him, okay?"

Chloe immediately caught on. "Megan, why does that sound like a goodbye? Where are you? What are you planning?"

Megan gave a quiet laugh. "Don’t worry. I’ll be back soon. The baby’s gonna need his cool aunt, right?"

"Promise me you’ll come back safe, okay?"

"I promise."

She ended the call quickly, afraid she might break down if she didn’t.

Burying herself in Tristan’s arms, all she wanted in that moment was for their little family of three to be safe and together.

Meanwhile, outside the hospital, Chloe was sitting on the cold ground, clutching her phone and crying uncontrollably. Her mom was gone, now Grandpa too, and she had no idea what danger her sister might be rushing into.

Suddenly, a polished pair of leather shoes came into view in front of her. Kevin crouched down and gently wiped the tears from her cheeks. "Don’t cry, Chloe. You’ve still got me."

Chloe had never seen him act this serious before. She sniffled, then chuckled through the tears. "You’re more charming when you’re not trying to be."

Any heartfelt confession Kevin had prepared completely missed the mark. He coughed awkwardly. "Let’s go say goodbye to your grandpa. I’ll go with you."

He stood and offered her his hand. "Come on."

Chloe placed her hand in his and let him pull her up, falling right into his arms.

"You won’t leave me, will you?" she asked.

"Never." He wrapped her in tightly. "I’m staying right here with you."

Standing at a distance, Elliot took in the scene quietly. With the family losing loved ones one after another, he felt utterly powerless. He didn’t know if he’d see another day himself. All he could hope was that whatever blessings were left to him could be passed to his daughters. From the looks of it, even if he didn’t make it, they’d still be okay. Maybe even happy.

The news of Bernard’s fall broke fast, flooding the internet.

When Stella saw the news, the teacup in her hand slipped and shattered, pieces scattering across the floor.

Her hands trembling, she called Megan’s number. The line connected. "Mom," Megan said. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

"Sweetheart, I just saw the news... Bernard, he... he’s gone. And there was an explosion at the hospital. Are you hurt?"

"I’m okay, Mom. Really. I just miss you a lot right now."

Stella’s voice trembled. "Tell me where you are, honey. Please."

"Don’t worry, Mom. I’m with Tristan."

"And your brother?"

Megan looked out the window. "He’s good too. He’s with his assistant."

There was so much more Stella wanted to ask, but Megan gently cut in, "It’s alright. I’m safe. Once we’ve handled everything for Grandpa, we’ll be home soon."

Still, Stella’s heart twisted with unease, the kind that wouldn’t fade. "Megan, you’re all I’ve got left, you hear me? Promise you won’t let anything happen to you."

Tristan took the phone and spoke calmly, "Mom, I promise. Nothing’s gonna happen. Don’t worry."

After hanging up, Stella made a couple more calls—to Oliver and Samuel. Both told her they were on their way to the hospital.

But their real destination was Binford, where they were headed to rescue Brandon.
