THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 82: The Dark Ace
Still at the hospital, Kathleen’s scrutinizing gaze pierced into Spider’s eyes thoroughly as if she wanted to see what was imbedded in his soul.
Spider unconsciously flinched under the intensity of her gaze despite his tough demeanor.
"Have you ever heard of the term "second chance?" Spider heard when he was on the verge of losing his mind.
"Second chance? Is this what all these is about?" Spiders brow shot up in confusion.
"Now you’re not making sense. You want to spare me?" To say he didn’t believe her was an understatement. Rather, he felt she was enjoying the mind game she was playing with him.
"What else do you think I was doing all along?" Kathleen asked, clearly amused at the doubt in Spider’s eyes.
"I thought you wanted me alive so that you can drill me."
Is that not the way it is usually done? After catching an enemy the enemy’s life will be preserved in order to get information from him.
"That’s too lame and common, and I am not an advocate of people who maintain the status quo. Like I said before, I have my way of knowing whatever I want to know with or without you. It’s just that I don’t have much time to waste over a small fry like Mrs Beazell."
"Mrs Beazell is no small fry. I think you are underestimating her." Obviously, this lady didn’t know who Mrs Beazell truly was. If she knew the force behind Mrs Beazell, she wouldn’t be bragging here.
Kathleen smirked, her tone full of mockery as she said, "I think you are the one overestimating her."
"Why do you think I’m underestimating her?"
Since Kathleen had spared his life, Spider thought it right to repay her kindness so he warned.
"Although you are not simple yourself, Mrs Beazell is someone you shouldn’t mess with."
"Is it because of her connection with Dark Ace?" Kathleen blurted out with disdain.
Spider’s heart nearly jumped out of his widely opened mouth as colour drained from his face.
"I would close that mouth if I were you’" sneered Kathleen. "This is a hospital and you never can tell what bacteria might be on the rampage."
Spiders mouth snapped shut with the speed of light but his bewildered face was still as white as a fleece.
"You know about the Dark Ace?" He managed to say after what seemed like eternity.
If he had found this lady interesting before, now, she was dangerously mysterious. He made up his mind not to do anything that will annoy her from henceforth.
Kathleen chuckled to herself. "Do I know the Lord of Dark Ace?" It was the same as asking her if she knew the chief surgeon of Medstar Hospital.
Two years ago, while still in Luxembourg, she had heard that a town planning project was going on, which was aimed at developing some municipalities into a town. It was also estimated that after the development, the averaged population would be around 30,000 inhabitants.
With that she had planned to establish a branch of KC Wyatt Pharmaceutical Company in Ettelbruck, which was one of the municipalities to be developed.
One fateful evening, her car had broken down on a lonely path while returning from Ettelbruck, where she had gone to inspect the site for the company.
After sending a call through to her assistant to bring a car over, she heard the sound of a car engine but surprisingly, no car was in sight.
She was alerted when she saw tire marks veer off from the main road into a bush path not too far from where her car had broken down.
Out of curiosity, she ventured out to see what it was, disregarding the cautionary words from her driver.
On second thought, she paused after taking a few steps, "could it be that I’m walking right into a trap like my driver warned?" She asked herself.
’Well my self defense skills were above average if anything should happen. Furthermore, my driver is also beside me if things should get out of hand,’ she encouraged herself then took cautious steps forward, following the trail left by the tyre marks.
The stems and leaves of the crushed grasses were still fresh which means it had not been long since the car passed there.
She became more alert and didn’t need to walk long when she saw a car whose bumper had kissed a large tree and inside the car, lay a body
Her eyes could barely take in the sight of the man lying in a pool of his own blood. A slight rise on his chest on a closer look, indicated that he was still alive.
Her lifesaving mode was instantly activated to full capacity.
She nodded to her driver who was cautiously following and he hurried off and returned shortly afterwards with her medical kit which was always in the car for occasions like this.
She moved a lock of blood-soaked hair out of the man’s face revealing a gaping hole where his left brow should have been.
The multiple stab wounds were in different locations on his body. Luckily no important organ was stabbed about from the eyebrow..
They rushed him to the hospital in her assistant’s car, who had arrived not long after she finished giving him the basic first aid treatment.
It was two weeks after he recovered that she got to know that she had unknowingly saved the life of the Lord of The Dark Ace.
Kathleen however didn’t tell Spider all these.
For now let him guess whether she knew about The Dark Ace or not. Afterall his mind has been barren all this while so he needs to exercise his mind a bit before they’ll turn stale.
Moreover one shouldn’t be quick to reveal all their cards. It will be best appreciated when it is revealed as a joker. It is only then that you can give your opponent an irrecoverable defeat.
"My policy is that I am never in a hurry to completely give up on someone unless he proves to be a lost case, then...," the look in her eyes gradually turned menancing. "... I’ll help you achieve your end faster."
Spider felt chills all over his body. Although she wasn’t referring to him, he wasn’t foolish enough not to know that it was a warning she was sounding out.
Knowing that she got Spider where she wanted, Kathleen posed the long expected request.
"The police will be here in a moment. I want you to say all you know, leaving nothing out." It was more like a command than a request.
"I’ve been able to stall them this long because they believed you were still unconscious."
"Police, I thought you were not going to turn me in?" Spider’s voice was tinged with disappointment.
Kathleen seemed not to notice his crestfallen expression and responded coldly,
"Your cooperation will determine if you go in or not."
There was no going back at this point. It was better to cooperate with her than face Mrs Beazell who he knew would not let him go.
"I will cooperate with them," Spider said resignedly. "Whatever they want to know, I will answer to the best of my knowledge."
"Better." Kathleen got up to leave and met Dr Sullivan leading in two cops. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
He nodded in acknowledgement and entered the ward.
Back at the mall, Steffan had been looking all over for the boy but he was nowhere to be found.
"Where could he have disappeared to?" He had completely forgotten why he came to the mall in the first place. It was when he saw a little girl holding hands with her parents that he remembered he came here to get a birthday gift for his niece.
He went back inside to get the gift before going back to the hospital.
Elvis, who had been on the watch out for him, saw him leave the mall before going back inside.
He went to the checkout counter closest to the door, took out his phone and gave his grandma a call.
"Grandma, where are you? I can’t see you anywhere in the mall."
"Your sister wanted to ease herself so your Aunt Cheryl took her to the toilet. Where are you?"
"I’m at the checkout counter close to the door,"
"Wait there. I will come over to pick you up," Stacy said.
"Yes grandma," Elvis nodded and approached the lady at the counter.
"Beautiful Aunt," he called out with a smile.
The cashier looked up and was instantly fascinated by the cute handsome boy smiling at her.
His features and noble demeanor soon attracted the attention of her colleague who was standing beside her and other shoppers who were there to pay for the items they bought.
"Hi cutie pie, what can I do for you?" the lady Elvis had addressed asked.
"Please can I stand here for a few minutes to wait for my grandmother? She is still in the mall and will be coming out soon," he requested with utmost politeness.
"That wouldn’t be a problem dear." She went further to give him a chocolate bar that was displayed on her counter which Elvis politely refused after thanking her of course.
The lady was highly impressed with his behavior and didn’t fail to sing his praises.
