THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 61: My Blood Can Go With You
At her father’s sad look, Kathleen softened her tone.
"So what’s the delay, they should go ahead with the surgery. There are good neurosurgeons in Luxembourg or is there any complication?"
"The thing is that he has a rare blood type and they’ve been unable to get donors."
Kathleen’s lips pursed in thought. "But our blood type is Rh- null, also known as the Golden blood and can donate to other rare blood types." 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
Understanding Kathleen’s meaning, Director Robin explained, "I would have donated mine but I was not allowed to because of my age. So..."
"I’m the only person we can count on for now." Kathleen concluded from where her father trailed off from.
He nodded, his mood was pensive.
"When is the surgery?" Kathleen knew what she had to do so she didn’t beat about the bush.
"The doctor said, as soon as a blood donor is found, the surgery can take place."
"You already have a solution yet you are still so worried? I’ll donate mine then."
A grateful smile broke out on Director Robin’s once gloomy face.
He reached out and held Kathleen’s hand. "Thank you so much my dear. "
"You don’t need to be so excited, as a doctor, it’s the least I could do."
"But I still need to thank you for helping out."
"What’s the use of living, when you can’t be of help to humanity?"
She has always felt fulfilled each time she renders help to someone in need, hence she didn’t feel she was doing anything out of the ordinary.
"This is the main reason I decided to be a doctor. It is so I can save people’s lives and give hope to the hopeless, to the best of my ability."
Director Wyatt’s eyes were moist as he gazed at his precious daughter with a heart of gold.
Unable to stop himself, he reached out and enveloped her in a tight hug.
Kathleen was surprised when all of a sudden she found herself in her father’s embrace but nonetheless, flung her arms around his strong back.
"So when can we leave for Luxembourg?" He stabilized his emotion and released her after some seconds.
"I can’t leave with you now. I have so much on my hands as we speak."
The light in Director Wyatt’s eyes dimmed at her words. "But..."
"I know," Kathleen hurried to dispel his worries. "I don’t need to go with you but my blood can go."
"What do you mean?" His disappointed look was replaced with that of confusion, so Kathleen had to explain further.
"There is a way we can transport my blood from Baltimore to Luxembourg without me going over there."
"After collecting the blood, it will be stored in a specially designed, temperature-controlled material."
"Thermologger protocols will be available to monitor the temperature throughout the time it is being transported to Luxembourg. With that we can ensure that the blood is maintained at the regulation levels of 2°C and 6°C."
Kathleen explained further, "This is because the temperature of the blood cannot fall lower or get higher than 2°C and 6°C respectively. Anything outside that, the blood will no longer be safe to use."
"So that’s how it is." He still had his concerns "But my aides can’t be trusted with such a sensitive task?"
"I will get someone to go with you to monitor the temperature and ensure that nothing goes wrong in the transportation process. He will be there with you until the blood is taken to the hospital and handed over to the doctor at Luxembourg."
"However, we have to get the necessary documentation and permits so you are not delayed at the airport." Kathleen added.
"There will be no need for that. I will take the company’s private plane. It will save us both time and stress."
"That’s the best option. Why didn’t I think of that?"
"You can’t think of everything my dear." Giving Kathleen a light tap on the nose, he felt like sharing some wisdom nuggets.
"That’s why God created most of our organs in pairs. When one fails, the other will still be there to make up for the lost part."
"The same principle applies to humanity and that’s where the saying "two good heads are better than one" comes in.
"You are absolutely right, dad. You are there to think of those things my little head cannot handle and I love you so much for that."
She stood up to get her phone from the table. "I need to make some calls to make the arrangements."
"Go ahead dear. I also need to make some calls."
After concluding with the hospital, she called Ariel.
A flushed faced Ariel entered the office almost immediately. It was obvious she ran from wherever she was coming from.
"I am going somewhere with my dad and might not come back to the office. Clear my schedule for today and call me if anything you can’t handle crops up."
She gathered her stuff that was on the table into her handbag which Ariel stepped forward to collect, leaving her with only the phone.
"Inform all the heads of departments that their report should all be sent before the end of work tomorrow."
Having settled all that needed to be settled, Kathleen set out with her dad to the hospital.
Because it wasn’t yet the close of work, traffic was light and so it didn’t take them long to get to the hospital.
Dr Sullivan was waiting for them at the entrance of the hospital and as soon as he saw Kathleen, went forward to meet them.
"Thanks for receiving us at this short notice. Please, meet my father, Director Robin Wyatt."
She turned to her father, "Dad, here is Dr Sullivan, he is the chief surgeon of this hospital and has been of great help since I came."
Dr Sullivan was flattered at the way Kathleen introduced him to her father.
He bowed deeply in reverence of the man before him.
