Chapter 59: She’s The Only Beauty I Will See In My Life

Ariel looked uncertain as she asked, "Do I need to clear your schedule for the remaining days of this month?"

"Not yet." Kathleen went over a particular document on her table and appended her signature,

"What’s the report from Mr Kelly? Has he come up with any new findings on what I asked him to investigate?"

"He called to ask for an appointment. He said he needs to see you in person because it is not safe to talk on the phone."

"Check my schedule for Wednesday and see if we can fix him in."

Kathleen closed her eyes as her slender fingers gently massaged her forehead in a circular motion.

After a few seconds, her eyes gradually opened and focused on the ceramic vase in which were artfully arranged freshly picked peace lilies, giving the office a relaxing atmosphere.

She had added that extra detail to her office. She has always advocated that since workers spend more of their time in their offices than anywhere else, the work place should not be lifeless and melancholic but somewhere to look forward to each day. And what better way to give life to such a place than adding a pot or two of flowers.

Aside from their aesthetic purposes, they also have mental benefits. It is believed that having flowers in the office and a good working environment can reduce stress and increase productivity and the overall mental health of the workers.

Ariel swiped her tablet and scanned through the itinerary, "From the previous schedule, you were to see the delegates from Pfizer by twelve noon and inspect the new project thereafter."

Pfizer was one of the companies that have expressed their interest in collaborating with KC Wyatt Pharmaceuticals in the new drug that has just been produced.

They were to finalize on the last stage of the mass production and how to launch it into the market.

"That means my morning is free. Set up a meeting with Kelly for ten. I will see him before the meeting with the delegates from Pfizer."

She raised her head in the direction of the door in response to the knock on the door. It soon opened and her secretary ushered in a middle aged man with spectacles. His 6’3" perfect height and well defined features made him stand out in the luxurious office.

A tranquil smile creased up the sides of his eyes when he saw Kathleen.

"Dad?" screamed Kathleen, her eyes widening in shock. Rising from her seat, she rushed out with extended arms. The short distance between them was soon covered by a single stride from her father’s long legs and Kathleen was soon clasped in her father’s arms.

"Hmmmm," she breathed in the unique scent from her father’s cologne while basking in his warm embrace.

Director Robin, who had missed most parts of his daughter’s life, didn’t seem to get enough of her and held her tighter.

Ariel looked on in silence. She was seeing the father and daughter together for the first time and couldn’t help but appreciate the affection they had for each other.

After what looked like eternity, they finally separated and Kathleen frowned.

"Dad, why didn’t you inform me about your coming so I can come pick you from the airport?"

"I’m sorry dear," The doting smile on Director Wyatt’s face was unmistakable. "I wanted to surprise you."

"And you sure did. It is quite a huge one I must say, a pleasant one though."

"I’m glad you like it and I’m happy to see you like this." He stepped back and scrutinized her, "turn around dear."

After his assessment, he nodded in satisfaction. "I can see that my baby girl has been taking good care of herself."

Kathleen laughed and took him by the hand, leading him to the couch in the office.

"You don’t look bad yourself," she said after giving him a once over. "I’m surprised Mum allowed you to travel all by yourself. Wasn’t she scared some hot beauty will steal you away?"

Director Robin Wyatt was already in his fifties, yet still handsome to the point of turning heads whenever and wherever he appeared. He looked dashing and dignified in his three piece grey suit.

He was the male version of Kathleen and Ariel who was seeing them together for the first time had no problem believing they were father and daughter.

He pinched Kathleen’s chin and chuckled, "You naughty child, no one can compare to your mother. She is forever hot in my heart and the only beauty I will ever see in my life. That excludes you of course, my dear," he hastened to add.

"Thanks to both of your awesome genes, I turned out this way."

From the corners of her eyes she noticed Ariel was still standing looking at them with what could best be described as a silly smile.

"Ariel, please get a cup of latte for my dad. Exactly the type I take."

"I discovered a barista the first month I came back. He brews such excellent coffee especially our favorite latte and have long been delivering coffee to the company every day after l gave him a generous tip."

"The way you are describing this barista, I can’t wait to have a taste of his coffee."

"You will love it, Dad."

After the door closed behind Ariel, Kathleen turned serious. "What brings you to Baltimore and how is mum?"

"I missed my baby girl so I decided to come. Your mom is fine and she will be joining us by the weekend."

She frowned slightly and asked, "Why didn’t you come together?"

Director Robin patted Kathleen’s arm as he explained, "She has been asked to speak at a function in Luxembourg. It’s the yearly summit of Traditional Medicine Practitioners in Luxembourg."

"I now remember. I also received an invite but had to turn it down as I had too much on my plate here."

"Now tell me Dad, it’s just the two of us here. Why are you in Baltimore all of a sudden?"

"I’ve said I missed you. Is that not a good reason for me to come?" Seeing the look Kathleen gave him, he knew he had no choice but to tell her.
