Chapter 50: Hearing Loss

Kathleen looked over the report again wishing there was a mistake in her interpretation, finding none, she silently passed the report back to Dr Sullivan.

He instantly grabbed it from her hand and his eyes ran a quick scan over the report. π˜§π“‡β„―π‘’π“Œπ‘’π‘π“ƒπ˜°π˜·π˜¦π˜.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"It says here that sound waves are not being conducted to his brain." His forehead wrinkled in a frown.

"Meaning that he is suffering from post traumatic hearing loss, although temporarily," he analyzed. "This is serious. I didn’t see that coming."

"Yeah it’s indeed serious. Can we go and see him now?" Kathleen asked.

"Of course." Dr Sullivan placed the report in a green folder on his table.

"As soon as he woke up, we transferred him to the special ward on the sixth floor as you requested and the bodyguards you sent have been guarding him in secret. So, we will be heading to the sixth floor," he explained.

"After you then."

They walked through the long hall with Dr Sullivan responding occasionally with a slight nod to the greetings of other doctors and nurses they passed in the hallway.

Some even turned back to admire the gorgeous lady with a noble aura walking beside the Chief doctor, while a nurse who was walking with a fellow nurse and couldn’t give up a chance for some spicy gossip struck a conversation.

"Wow! Such beauty. Who do you think she might be?" she exclaimed.

"She definitely doesn’t look like a patient. Maybe she is a celebrity," responded her colleague.

"I don’t think so, those celebrities only walk about after they have disguised themselves beyond recognition."

"Did you notice those charming eyes that looked way out of this world when she glanced at us just now?" the first nurse asked excitedly.

"Who would miss them? They are way too lovely," the second nurse said. "Hold on! I think I’ve seen her before with Chief."

She smelt some breaking news brewing and quickly prompted, "Do you think she is the chief’s girlfriend?"

"Nah," refuted the other nurse. "Chief is already married and very devoted to his wife."

"Yeah, that’s correct," agreed her colleague.

"I think she may have come to see a relative here in the hospital."

"That’s seems like a better explanation." She stopped in front of a particular ward. "See you later, I have to check on a patient in ward 12."

"That’s OK. See you around then."

Kathleen and Dr Sullivan who were completely unaware that they have caused a commotion by just walking down the hall together, took the elevator to the sixth floor where Spider’s ward was.

There were few wards on this floor so it wasn’t as busy as the first three floors. The floor was for special cases that required absolute quietness and privacy.

Dr Sullivan led Kathleen to a door on which was written restricted. He pushed the door and as expected there was no movement from Spider at the sound of the door opening.

One of the nurses who has been assigned to take care of him heard the door opening and stood at alert. When she saw that it was the chief who came in, she relaxed her vigilance but not without wondering who the stunning lady with him was.

They gave her a slight nod and motioned for her to keep quiet as they approached Spider’s bed.

Kathleen observed that the tubes that were previously connected to his body and oxygen mask has been removed. Only an IV drip stand was still by his bedside and the peripheral intravenous catheter was still at the back of his hand.

It was not until they stood beside the bed and faced him directly that he realized that somebody have entered the room.

He turned his head to look at who came in and his eyes widened in shock when he saw Kathleen in the doctor’s company. Instinctively, he cringed back at the intense gaze he received from those eyes that he had been unable to decipher since he saw it in the picture sent to him by Mrs Beazell at the club.

Kathleen wasn’t surprised as she had expected this reaction from him. From his reaction, she knew he recognized her.

She was naturally a kind person but when faced with the person who wanted to take her life, she was no saint as she gave him a death glare.

"You tried to kill me but fate has delivered you into my hands. What do you think I should do to you now?"

Spider also knew that his days were numbered the moment he saw Kathleen. Now seeing this lady’s mouth moving, he was able to read from her expression that she wouldn’t show him any mercy.

So after recovering from his initial shock, his hardened face showed no further emotion.

He has been thinking of how to escape ever since he woke up and realized he was in a hospital. Although the throbbing pains in his head and other parts of his body had greatly reduced compared to the first time he regained consciousness, his body was still very weak and he couldn’t really do much to save himself for now.

He wondered what condition Drake would be in.

When he tried to find out from the nurse, he only saw her mouth moving in response to his question but didn’t hear a single word from her mouth and wondered why.

It was later, he found out he couldn’t hear anything, he was devastated and knew he had to learn to rely on his other senses. To do that, he will need to train his other senses to pick up signals that he couldn’t get from his ears.

When the doctor came a few hours ago and started talking, he guessed he was asking him something but didn’t say anything because he didn’t hear what the doctor was saying.

The doctor might have assumed that he didn’t want to talk or was too weak to respond to him. After several failed attempts to make him say something, he took him for a test.

He hasn’t seen him since then until now and couldn’t help but wonder what his fate was now that the person he tried to kill appeared with the doctor.
