THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 320: Damn The Doctor!
But that was not his problem, what really confused him was why they all seemed to be covering up when it came to Lauren.
What’s actually going on? And who actually is Lauren to them?
Why was she the one by his bedside when he woke up? Although she had given him an explanation for that, he still suspected that something was off.
Why did his parents look disappointed when he told them he didn’t remember who Lauren was, especially his mother?
From their behavior, Steffan couldn’t shake off the feeling that his family knew more than they were letting on.
Since none of them wanted to give him the right explanation, he has a way of finding out.
All the while that he has been in the hospital, he had discovered that all the doctors and nurses that had attended to him had been particularly enthusiastic and treated him like they were very familiar with him.
When he had asked the reason, he got to know that he had been working with them for the past six years as one of the top surgeons which he confirmed to be true from Dr Sullivan.
Maybe he should start from there. They would know who brought him to the hospital whether it was Lauren as everyone claimed or someone else.
When he’s able to settle that, he’ll decide his next line of action from there.
Probably, he would find out the particular location where he was shot and which police station the case was filed.
Stanley’s eyes were filled with worry as he saw his brother spacing out for so long. "Hey, what are you busy thinking in your head? Remember you are not to put pressure on your brain."
"What do you expect?" Came Steffan’s scornful remark. "You don’t expect me to live happily with six freaking years missing from my life and since you all have refused to help, I have to do it myself."
Stanley was greatly alarmed. "Don’t do this to yourself Steffan. You have to take it easy. I’m sure you’ll gradually remember as time goes on."
"Says who? The great psychologist or psychiatrist?" Steffan mocked. "I am the doctor here and should know best how these things work."
"Besides, I’m not that fragile that I can’t handle these things. The best you should do for me as a big brother is to tell me what has been going on in my life and see if I can accept it or not."
After listening to Steffan, Stanley hesitated as he wrestled with his own inner conflict. His mind echoed the warning the doctor had given them and at the same time Steffan’s persistent plea.
"I don’t know, Steffan. The doctor said—"
Steffan’s voice cut him off as his frustration bubbled to the surface.
"Damn the doctor! I need answers, Stanley. I need to know what happened in those six years."
Stanley looked away and ran a hand through his thick dark hair.
"Come on, Stanley. I know you are doing this because you care, but I need to know. Who is Lauren? Why would I take a bullet for her? How is she connected to those years? Tell me, please."
Stanley sighed heavily. He knew he shouldn’t oblige to Steffan in his request as it could have consequences they weren’t prepared for, but he also couldn’t bear to see Steffan in such agony.
"Alright, alright. But promise me you’ll stay calm, Steff. I don’t want to risk anything."
"I promise," Steffan quickly said even before Stanley finished his statement. "Out with it already," he whined when Stanley still hesitated.
Just as Stanley was about to open up, the door swung open, startling them both.
They looked up only to see that it was their parents who entered the room, concern etched into their features as they took in the scene before them.
Steffan shot Stanley a pleading look, silently urging him to keep their conversation a secret.
"Mom, Dad, what are you doing here?" He asked, clearly angry that their conversation has been interrupted.
Their parents exchanged a knowing glance before stepping further into the room. ’What were these children up to ?’
"We came to see you, of course. Steffan. Stanley, what’s going on? Were you not in a hurry to be at the company just now?" Sarah asked with a suspicious look as her eyes darted between her two sons.
Stanley scrambled to come up with an explanation, his mind racing to deflect their suspicions.
But before he could come up with one, Steffan forced a smile.
"Yeah, yeah, everything’s fine. My brother also dropped by to see me before heading to the office and we were just catching up with each other, that’s all." Steffan quickly explained.
"And do you know what he just told me?"
Stanley’s heart pounded with apprehension at Steffan’s words.
Was he really going to disclose their discussion to their parents? Wasn’t he the one that begged just now not to say anything.
By the time he wanted to speak, his brother beat him to it again.
"He told me that the doctor said I can go home," he announced with inexplicable joy that left no room for doubt.
"Really? You mean you are now free to go home? I’m so happy."
"What are you still standing there for? Quick hurry out to handle the discharge formalities," Sarah nudged Stanley whose face was still dangling in between anxiety and relief. "We are leaving immediately."
"Huh?" Steffan couldn’t hide his surprise. "Why so soon?"
"If not now, when? Have you become so comfortable here that you want to spend the rest of your life tied to this bed?" Sarah scolded.
The earlier he left the hospital, the better it will be to start arranging for more opportunities for Lauren to interact with him.
She can’t wait to hold Steffan and Lauren’s daughter in her arms and the earlier he regained his memory, the faster that would be.
As Stanley was going out, he met Dolly by the door. Somehow his spirit did not just agree with this doctor who has always been around Steffan, but since his parents were inside, he left silently.
"Hey, Steff, I heard you’ll be discharged today. Congratulations."
Sarah spun around and threw Dolly a sharp look. She knew her type very well. She didn’t have any good impression about those overly nice nurses and doctors who can’t keep their claws away from handsome young men like her son. And this one here, fitted perfectly into that category of bitches.
After the first time she saw her in Steffan’s ward supposedly massaging Steffan’s head, clad in a shirt with two buttons opened where it was supposed to be closed, she had known her purpose. By her judgment, no decent doctor would expose that amount of cleavage when she was on duty.
Maybe Dolly was also aware of what Sarah thought of her, so she didn’t bother to please her as she just muttered a perfunctory,
"Hello, Mrs Rosse," then smiled disarmingly at David who was clueless.
"It’s great to see you, uncle. Are you here to take Steffan home? I could help send him home with you."
Sarah’s lips curled in a smirk. Why are some people utterly shameless?
"Yes, we are taking him home and we don’t want to take undue advantage of your kindness, so your duty ends here, Doctor!"
