Chapter 318: I Swear On Steffan’s Life

Rhoda sighed helplessly but still said,

"I can see your mind is made up, but you must promise me one thing, if not I won’t allow you take the test."

Benita didn’t say anything she just stared at her mother. Rhoda took it as a cue for her to state her requirements.

"You must promise me that whatever the result is you will not do anything stupid to hurt yourself again. I can’t bear to lose you."

"It’s best she takes the test to keep everyone’s mind at rest," Randy said, afraid that Rhoda would make Benita change her mind.

The "everyone’s mind" he spoke about wasn’t just referring to the Dawson family, but also himself.

He needed to find out if Killian was right about his subordinates character.

The rugged confidence with which he defended them at his office was still too much to the extent that he was almost swayed himself, but hearing Benita’s side of the story he began to doubt again.

So the only way to clear that doubt is to ensure she takes the test. Even if she refuses, he will find a way to make her take it.

"Although you are still not exonerated from the charges against you since there is no evidence to prove that there was no bullet in the gun you carried, we are not without human feelings and care for everyone’s life, including yours."

"Humph," Benita snorted. Were they not working hand in hand with her captors?’ If not how did she suddenly end up in the police station after those evil people had their way with her?

The only reason she chose to cooperate with them now is because she wanted to put an end to the torturous questions in her heart and also pull herself together inorder to find out who actually plotted against her.

She had someone in mind already but didn’t want to believe she is that conniving.

So turning to her mother, she said, "I promise not to harm myself, mom."

The promise was too casual that Rhoda doubted her daughter.

Was she just saying it so that she would let her be? No I have to get her sincerity, so she said,

"You have to promise me on the most dearest thing to you."

Benita couldn’t believe what her mother said. Was she doubting her? She was about to get angry but then realized that she couldn’t blame her either after the stupid stunt she pulled earlier.

She understood her mother’s predicament and her heart softened.

To make her mind be at rest she decided to oblige and and didn’t think twice when she said,

"I promise on Steffan’s life that I won’t hurt myself whatever the outcome of the test turns out to be," she promised solemnly.

Benita who expected her mother to finally relax was stunned when she saw her next reaction.

Rhoda’s eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at her daughter. ’Do I really hold that little space in her heart? I’m finished.’

Then she redirected her anger to Steffan. ’Why can’t you return my daughter’s love? How can you be so wicked not to see that she loves you. I wish you had truly died from that bullet,’ she cursed inwardly.

But wouldn’t that have made her daughter a murderer? So she quickly withdrew the curse.

Randy on the other hand sneered when he heard what Benita said.

"Tsk! Swearing on Steffan’s life? The same person you almost killed?" 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

"I didn’t mean to kill him, I only wanted to.... Wait! Did you say almost?"

She jumped up from the bed but because she was still very weak, she felt dizzy and collapsed back on the bed.

Rhoda glared at Randy and if looks could kill, he would have been stone cold dead by now.

"Take it easy, Benita, you have to be self aware. You are still weak and shouldn’t be

too excited," she scolded a little too harshly.

She was still struggling to come to terms with the fact that Steffan occupied a more important place in Benita’s heart and now coupled with Randy’s stimulation, she couldn’t help but vent.

After Benita recovered from her dizziness, she propped herself up with a pillow and stared at Randy, her eyes glinting with hope.

"Dare you saying that Steffan did not die?"

"He narrowly escaped death, but his condition is not good," Randy revealed.

"I want to see him immediately. Please take me to him," Benita begged.

"Not again, Benita," Rhoda groaned.

Wasn’t it best if she never found out that Steffan survived.

They had planned that after the whole incident was over, they were going to take her out of the country for good, never to return again.

But now that she knows that Steffan is alive, is that still going to be possible?

"My dear, follow mummy’s advise and forget about Steffan."

"But I love him, mom," Benita whined.

"Really? But I will not sit back and watch you destroy yourself again. See where your love brought you. As far as he is concerned, he is nothing but bad luck, so let him go, Benita."

Seeing that the situation was getting out of hand, Randy stepped in.

"I’m afraid you cannot visit him. You are still a suspect and don’t have the freedom to go socializing like before. Not to mention that the person you want to visit is the same person you nearly took his life."

"I’m not going there to socialize. I only want to see him so that I can explain to him that I never meant to shoot at him," Benita cried.

"It’s not that easy, so forget about seeing him again until you are proven innocent," Randy stated bluntly.

"He is right, dear. I don’t think he would want to see you, at least not for now. Even if he wanted to, do you think his family would allow you? Think about it yourself. Although you didn’t want to shoot him, but you almost killed him."

"Listen to your mother, young lady. What you should be more concerned about now is how to recuperate fast and find a way to exenorate yourself if truly you are innocent like you claimed," Randy said and stood to his feet.

"And the first step is for you to get the test done as soon as possible. Good day and don’t try to do anything stupid," he ordered before finally closing the door behind him.

When they were finally alone, Benita burst into tears.

"Is this how you want to spend the rest of your life? Pining after a man that doesn’t deserve your love?" Rhoda scolded.

She couldn’t understand why her daughter was so stuck up on Steffan. There were numerous men lining up to spoil her with just a snap of her fingers.

"But he is mine, mom. Right from when we were little he belonged to only me. It’s hard not to continue loving him."

Rhoda could not remain angry with her for long especially when she saw how helpless she looked and drew her in for an embrace.

"I understand dear, but if you truly love him, you would want him to be happy, right?"

Seeing Benita nod, Rhoda continued,

"But that can only happen if you let him go."

A conflicted look flickered across Benita’s eyes as she pondered on her mother’s words.

Can she really let him go?
