Chapter 283: A Bitter Pill

Joanne never imagined that a day like this would come in her life.

Why didn’t Kathleen tell her that day at Wyatt Corporations that she was the daughter of Director Wyatt? It would have saved her today’s embarrassment.

If she had just mentioned it once, it would have made her want to verify if it was true and today’s bucket of shame wouldn’t have been emptied on her.

"But truth be told, even if she had told me, I would have taken it as her spewing nonsense. It would have been practically impossible to believe such a ridiculous claim from Kathleen seeing the way it took Mrs Wyatt’s statement to convince me at their residence."

She also remembered that Kathleen had mentioned it somewhere in their argument earlier today that she was Director Wyatt’s daughter but she hadn’t taken her seriously.

She had always known that that good for nothing girl was too "black bellied" to be up to any good.

No..no, she is no longer "a good for nothing," she reluctantly corrected herself. "She is the daughter of Director Wyatt. The current wealthiest man in Baltimore."

"But how do I redeem myself in the sight of the Wyatts? And to think I said all those terrible things about their daughter."

"Hmmm!" She let out a deep breath. "I must say they are indeed one of a kind for tolerating me quietly while I was busy disgracing myself."

"Should I go and tell Shawn about the current development?"

She shook her head. "No, not yet. I can’t face the ridicule on his face when he hears what happened today."

"Tap! Tap !! Tap!!!" Joanne slapped her thighs all of a sudden, causing the clueless driver to peer at her through the rearview mirror worriedly.

Since she entered the car and ordered him to drive from the Wyatt’s residence, she had not made any phone call nor opened any of her fashion magazines to read as she usually does.

’Was everything alright with the Madam today? What exactly happened in that house that made her start behaving weirdly as soon as she came out?’

’Well, it’s not in my place to ask, I can only keep my thoughts to myself,’ he sighed.

"That unfilial son knew all along!" He heard her exclaim again, throwing the already puzzled driver into further confusion.

But who would blame Joanne who was currently going through a psychological overhauling and paid no attention to the almost distraught driver.

It suddenly dawned on her why Shawn had insisted she went on that tour before his Nana’s treatment and how he went on to facilitate everything in the twinkle of an eye.

"He did all that so that I won’t meet Dr Janice and know that she was actually Kathleen.

Doesn’t that also mean that my mother in-law also knows Kathleen’s true identity? After all, she had been the one receiving the medical treatment and kept receiving her follow up visits after recovery.

She shook her head in disbelief. "They’ve kept me in the dark all along."

"That also explained why Shawn had always found an excuse to turn down my request whenever I suggested inviting Doctor Janice over for dinner to thank her for the great work she did in making the old lady recover from her sickness."

She had a self mocking smile as she continued in her train of thoughts.

"I guess everyone knew who Doctor Janice was except me and I know who is responsible for that. Shawn would have threatened them not to say a word about her identity."

"I’ll be damned if I don’t strangle that boy to death. How can my own son do this to me?"

"And to think that he would have been laughing behind my back when I went to his office the other day to threaten him to get married to Director Wyatt’s daughter whom he knew was the same person I have hated with passion and didn’t want to have anything to do with."

"He must have seen me as a big sad joke when I proudly told him to wait for my good news."

"Shawn David Hudson!

Haaa!

You are wicked! For you to do this to your own mother, you are indeed wicked!" She lamented, finally breaking down in tears.

At this point, the driver had to reduce his speed to the lowest level. He wasn’t sure what was going on with the Madam who had been uttering strange words intermittently?

They were almost at the main entrance to Fairview Manor and he didn’t even know whether to head to the Hudson Manor or somewhere else, since she had not given him any specific destination after they left the car park.

All he could do at the moment was drive slowly and hope that she recovers from whatever she was suffering from as soon as possible.

"To the hospital," he heard an order out of the blues and thought it was part of what she had been mumbling under her breath since she got into the car.

"Huh?" he said when he realized she was actually talking to him.

"I said drive to the hospital!"

"Yes, Madam,"

’Better,’ he added under his breath, releasing a sigh of relief. It’s best she gets medical attention at the rate she was going before it gets out of hand.

He rerouted and headed to Medstar hospital since that was where the family used, moreso, President Hudson was also on admission there.

At the entrance to the hospital, they had to wait an extra five minutes as it was blocked by some ambulances.

It appeared there had been an accident somewhere involving several injured persons which were being transferred from the ambulances to the stretchers which were immediately rolled into the hospital building.

After they were cleared, they drove to the outpatient’s parking lot and the car had been barely parked before Joanne hurried out and went straight to her son’s ward.

On getting there, she was stopped at the door by his annoying bodyguards.

"Please Madam, you can’t go in now. The doctors are attending to him," one of them said.

"Why can’t I go in, surely he is not naked and even if he was I am still his mother. Is there anything about him that I haven’t seen or touched before now? Get out of the way!" Joanne snapped impatiently.

She wasn’t in the mood for any useless talks. There was so much on her mind that she needed to offload and she was careful enough to know where to direct it after what just happened. She had learnt from her mistakes in a bitter way and was not about to repeat it so soon.

Despite the cold expression on his face, a slight shade of pink still found its way onto the bodyguard’s face and he couldn’t help but feel that the boss’s mother was way funnier than he had imagined. ’How can she talk about the nakedness of a grown man so blatantly?’

’And the person she was referring to, happened to be his boss, who always carried himself with such high esteem. I would gladly forfeit my one year salary just to see the expression on the boss’s face if he per adventure, gets to hear what his mother had to say about him.’

"I’m sorry Madam, but you have to wait till they are done," he insisted firmly.

As a matter of fact, there was no doctor attending to their boss, but he had left strict orders that she shouldn’t be allowed to disturb him again after he got to know about the ruckus she caused when she last visited.

After she had tried all she could but was still politely, but firmly refused by the bodyguard, Joanne had no choice but to suppress the boiling anger in her that needed an immediate outlet and took a seat on the double seater couch in the waiting room attached to the VIP ward.

While waiting, she couldn’t help but reminisce on the whole event again.

How could things turn out this way?

"Kathleen? Suddenly turned an heiress to such a huge fortune?"

"Wonders shall never end," she muttered to herself still in disbelief, unable to accept the present reality.

This was indeed a pill too bitter for her to swallow as she was forced to realize that life indeed was full of twists and turns and no one should be completely written off by others, because just a little twist or a little turn can change everything in the twinkle of an eye.

"The lowest today can be at the top tomorrow and anything can change for anyone as long as there is life."

Not long afterwards she felt a soft touch on her shoulder, drawing her from her train of thoughts. She had not noticed anyone approaching as she was too lost in thoughts.

She slowly raised her bowed head and looked up only to see a pair of lovely crystal blue eyes staring at her innocently. They were so pure and clear that Joanne felt her heart melt and go out immediately to their owner.
