Chapter 274: Joke of The Century

"What!" Kathleen’s shrill voice broke out in the quiet hospital ward.

She couldn’t believe what she just heard Shawn say. Or was she gradually losing her hearing?

"You can’t be serious, right?"She let out a doubtful laugh.

"I’ve never been more serious," Shawn replied, looking as convincing as possible.

"Can you repeat what you just said? Wait. Let me say it to be sure I heard you correctly."

"You want to recuperate at Fairview Villa?" She asked disbelievingly and to her greatest surprise, Shawn’s head went up and down in a nod.

’This must be the joke of the century.’

She raised her hands to touch Shawn’s forehead and a frown appeared on her flawless face. ’He doesn’t have a fever that would have made him talk nonsense so he is certainly okay.’

She retrieved her hand from his forehead and crossed it over her chest as she starred at Shawn in disbelief.

"Why Fairview Villa if I may ask?"

Shawn ensured he held her gaze before he answered.

"I want to live in an environment where my mind will be at peace and what other place can that be than where my family is?"

"Your home is at Hudson Manor and that is where your family is, not Fairview Villa, President Hudson," Kathleen corrected.

"Besides, the Hudson Manor is serene and perfect for recuperating, take your Nana as an example. Isn’t she doing perfectly well there?" Kathleen tried to convince Shawn.

"How can that be called my home when my wife and children are not living there?" Shawn asked innocently.

"Stop whining like a three year old, Shawn and make up your mind on which of your apartments you would be moved to after you are discharged. As for Fairview Villa, that is completely out of the question," Kathleen stated in a tone that left no room for negotiation.

As far as she was concerned, the topic was over, but that could not be said about Shawn.

"If that’s the case, I’d rather remain here in this hospital," he threatened.

"Suit yourself. Afterall, you have enough money to offset the bills you would be accumulating," she retorted and proceeded to administer some drugs through the drip.

Shawn knew Kathleen’s mind was made up and moving in with her was not going to be easy. But he had already made adequate preparations for her stubbornness.

"Ok, I will go back to Hudson manor," he began.

"Now you are talking," Kathleen smiled brightly and congratulated herself for her dogged determination. If she had given in just now, she would have been saddled with Shawn’s excesses till God knows when.

Just as she was about to relax and scroll through her phone, Shawn’s next words threw her in a deep shock

"But the children will also come with me," Shawn declared.

"What! Never!"

"I don’t want them anywhere near Joanne!" She announced before she realized that she had said that aloud. No son would be happy knowing that their wife has that much hatred towards their mother.

She scratched her head as she tried to look for words to explain herself.

"Em.. I... I’m sorry, that didn’t come out well. What I mean..."

"I also don’t want her to meet them, at least not for now," Shawn interrupted, implying that he understood her point and was not angry with her.

Afterall, his mother had been nothing but a pain in the ass. He wouldn’t want to have such a mother in-law if he were a lady.

As a matter of fact he was even surprised how Kathleen had been able to tolerate her in the past.

And to be sincere, he had been very satisfied with the new version of Kathleen that he had seen standing up to his mom on several occasions since she came back.

"But the choice is yours, babe," he added and had to turn his face away to hide the mischievous glint in his eyes.

"Why are you doing this, Shawn?" Kathleen said in exasperation.

"I told you before I would do anything to get my family back as long as it is within the moral framework. You can’t blame me for wanting my family back. I love you, Kathleen and can’t afford to stay away from you. Not after divinity has given me a second chance— I would have died you know."

"Don’t say that, Shawn," Kathleen quickly interrupted.

"Why don’t you concentrate on recovering first and we will talk about this later."

"But this is a major part of the recovery process, Kathleen. As a doctor, I don’t need to lecture you on that," Shawn countered.

"How do you think I would recover fast with my mother breathing down my neck everyday with all forms of pressure and challenges?"

"I need somewhere she wouldn’t be able to access easily," Shawn said pitifully.

Kathleen was conflicted and didn’t know what to do.

Although she had made up her mind to give Shawn a second chance, the rate Shawn was going was too fast for her.

She knew all the excuses he was giving did not hold water. She was not a child not to understand the handwriting on the wall.

But she didn’t know Shawn would go to this length just to tie himself to her.

But what would her parents think of her?

All this while she had tried her best to convince them that she did not have any more feelings for Shawn and that she had moved on. How will she explain that her husband whom she had been estranged from for over six years wants to come stay in the family house all of a sudden.

"I can’t let you stay, Shawn."

"Is that your choice? Are you letting go of the children to accompany me at Hudson Manor."

"They won’t leave me, Shawn. That I am sure of. They have never left my side and can’t live without me."

"Are you sure about that, darling?" Shawn asked in a tone that threw Kathleen into another round of thinking.
