Chapter 269: Adults Were Indeed Too Complicated To Rely On.

Eleanor and Elvis were summoned again to the Head teacher’s office and wondered if it was their father whom they had not seen for some days.

It was unlike him to let a day pass without contacting them even if it was just to ask about school.

They were not even sure if he had succeeded in convincing their mother’s godmother into letting him stay at Fairview Villa as they had agreed the last time they hung out with him.

"Do you think daddy is here to see us because he misses us?" Eleanor asked, her voice laced with excitement.

"We will find out soon. Let’s get to the head teacher’s office first."

"Can’t you just guess? It will be more fun, instead of just walking there lost in thoughts."

"Go ahead and guess, I don’t think I have time for something that silly," Elvis deadpanned.

"Humph! You’re such a killjoy," Eleanor snorted and turned her face away from her unresponsive brother.

On reaching the office, her dissatisfaction was instantly replaced by an elated smile as she saw the person standing at the head teacher’s office.

"Mom!" She screamed and flung herself into Kathleen’s waiting arms.

"Mom!" Elvis was not left behind as he equally followed suit.

"How are my babies?" Kathleen said as she caught the two children in a tight embrace, showering them with kisses.

It’s been only a few days, but seeing them again seemed as if they’ve been apart for years.

"I’ve missed you so much!" Looking from one child to the other she couldn’t help but feel a tight constriction in her throat, when her gaze settled on Elvis’s face that looked so much like Shawn’s.

’I almost got their father killed,’ she wailed inwardly.

She didn’t know that her eyes have started glistening until Eleanor’s worried voice drew her attention to it. "Mom, you are crying, are you alright?"

"I’m fine, sweetheart. It is called "tears of joy?" she lied and raised her hand to clean the tears from her eyes. "I’m so happy to see you again. Did you miss mummy?" 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

"We are also happy to see you, mummy. And we missed you every single minute," Eleanor declared.

"Mom, we even stayed up to wait for you last night but you didn’t come back as you promised. We couldn’t even reach you on the phone."

Kathleen had an apologetic smile on her face as she ruffled Elvis’s head "I’m sorry sweetheart. I would have called you to inform you, but something suddenly came up that took most of my time till this morning," she explained.

"We understand, mom. Mrs Carr and Uncle Jason already explained it to us and we are happy now that you are back."

"Yes, mummy, we are happy to have you back" supported Eleanor.

"That’s good to hear. How are you coping with your studies?"

"Fine mom. Our teacher has said that there will be a meeting of all parents and teachers next week. And all parents are to be there.

"It’s the Teachers Parents Association meeting," Elvis corrected.

"Yes, mummy and we wanted to know if..."

"No," Kathleen refused before Eleanor could complete her request.

She knew exactly what she wanted to ask for permission for.

"But why mummy? You haven’t even heard what I wanted to say," pouted Eleanor.

"Forget it, Eleanor. I already told you mom wouldn’t agree."

Elvis, on the other hand wasn’t too disappointed. He had already envisaged such an outcome but had hoped he would be proven wrong.

"Hey there. It’s not about me this time around." Kathleen quickly defended herself.

’Have I been so strict that they could arrive at such conclusions about me?’

"It’s just that your father won’t be able to come."

"Why won’t he come. I’m sure if I ask him, he won’t be able to say no." Eleanor was confident in her abilities and didn’t fail to brag about it when the opportunity arose.

Kathleen gently pinched her soft cheeks and chided with a smile. "Aren’t you too proud?"

"I’m not proud. It’s just that daddy loves me the most."

"Really? So what happens to mummy’s love?"

If it were before she would have been scared but now that they will soon be living together as one big happy family, she could easily laugh it off.

"Mummy also loves me the most."

Elvis couldn’t help but smile at his sister’s attempt to please everyone.

"If that’s the case, mummy will be the one to come for the meeting."

"But I want daddy to come. You are the one that has been coming all this while," Eleanor rejected her mother’s kind offer.

How was she going to show off her handsome dad to everyone in class if mummy was the one to come.

Although mummy was equally beautiful and no other mother can compare with her, none of them had seen her father— except for that day at the sports event, but they didn’t know he was her father.

"I’m sorry sweetheart but your daddy can’t come. He will not be free to do so this time."

Elvis was able to pick out the main point and a slight frown appeared on his face.

"Did daddy travel?"

"Something like that, and he will be away for a very long while."

"What! How can he travel without informing us. That’s unfair," Eleanor stamped her feet and turned away in anger.

Apart from being unfair, Elvis felt it was quite an irresponsible thing to do.

How can he just bail out on them at the most critical moment. Adults were indeed too complicated to rely on.

They would agree with you on one thing and the next minute they will just change their mind and give you the perfect excuse which you would have no choice but agree with.

’Anyways, we have tried our best to get them back together as kids, the rest is for them to sort out themselves.’

"Hey! What’s going on in that little mind of yours?" Kathleen nudged Elvis who was apparently miles away.
